Deacon Jeff’s Corner

After much thought, I’m going to step into the deep this week. Let us all for a moment reflect on what is going on in our country and even in our own state with the racial unrest we are experiencing. I truly hope you will read this entire column before writing or calling me!

Is there racism in this country? Absolutely! The media tends to focus on the black community, but our brothers and sisters who are Hispanic, Asian, Hmong, American Indian, mixed heritage and so forth suffer from racism as well. Let’s take this a step further: Is there discrimination in our country? Again, the answer is definitely “yes”; there is a lot of discrimination in so many ways, despite all the laws we have in place to prevent it from happening.

To me, it seems this all goes back to a more simple, fundamental issue (in theological terms, sin) virtually everyone is guilty of: Judging someone too quickly or incorrectly. There are days I try to count the number of times I seem to judge someone immediately or unfairly and many days I lose count! I am hopeful I’m not the only one in this predicament!

I would like to believe none of us in this community are racist, which means we do not believe that one race is superior to another. If you do feel this way, please pray that God can help you to overcome your bias. Rather, I am hopeful we can all be more aware of how we judge others, based on the color of their skin, the clothing they are wearing, the way they speak or many other minor details. This is the sin Jesus would love to see wiped from the face of the earth and if it was, just imagine what a different world we would be living in!

Good judgement leads to the virtue of charity, something else Jesus wants for all of us to exhibit! The Catechism of the Catholic Church discusses charity by stating this: “The Lord asks us to love as he does, even our enemies, to make ourselves the neighbor of those farthest away, and to love children and the poor as Christ himself.” (CCC, paragraph 1825). The lack of charity is selfishness, and no matter how you perceive the events going on, we certainly have little charity and a lot of selfishness going on.

The next time you want to make a judgement on first impressions of a person, ask God for help. I’ve done it and I can tell you it works! You will be able to give the other person(s) a chance before making a judgement. Your judgement may still be incorrect, but at least you tried! :)

Jesus said, “In the world, you will have trouble, but take

courage, I have conquered the world.” (John 16:33).

Without a doubt, we all have troubles, but may our faith in Jesus who loves us unconditionally help us to overcome those troubles and the sin of poor judgement.

Please – let us all depend on Him! Deacon Jeff

Love First By: Amy Ertman

This week’s readings include very familiar Bible verses that I think are exactly what we need to hear in our current culture of protests, politics, and the pandemic.

Romans 13:9 says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The second reading gives specific clarification to say if you love for your neighbor, that pretty much covers half of the commandments. If you love your neighbor, you will not kill them or steal from them. If you love your neighbor, you are not jealous of what they have, nor want to hurt them by breaking up their marriage through infidelity.

In today’s Gospel, Matthew tells us when we gather in God’s name, He is always there with us: “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20). It all comes down to this: Love God and love people. I would like to take credit for that last line, but I am borrowing it from a Danny Gokey song. It perfectly wraps up how these readings are so pertinent to our world today:

We're living in a world that keeps breakin' But if we want to find a way to change it

It all comes down to this Love God and love people

What can you do right now to show God’s love to those around you? What can you do to bring love to all the hate pervading our society right now? When did we let hate get so ordinary?

Ok. I can’t take credit for that last question either. Josh Wilson asks it in his new song “Revolutionary.” His lyrics end this reflection better than anything I could say:

Why does kindness seem revolutionary When did we let hate get so ordinary

What would Jesus do He would love first

So we should love first
