At present students are working hard on assessment tasks and mid-semester tests as teachers are getting ready to complete end of semester reports, reporting on student progress so far during the year. In the next few weeks the students will be bringing home information about the parent teacher night. I urge you all to make a booking with your daughter’s teachers to talk openly and candidly about their progress. Having parents and caregivers involved with learning has proven to be a valuable tool in helping students’ learning and build their learning potential. Knowing what teachers have told you about your child’s progress gives you tools to talk to your daughter about their learning and gives them much needed encouragement, support and celebration about their what they are doing and makes them a more positive learner at school. The school spends a great deal of energy educating our students about cyber-bullying and the accepted ways of using the internet and social networking sites. Most students today have some form of social networking access that they do over the internet. We try to instil in your daughters safe practices when using the internet. Like banking we are told to never give out pin numbers or give out information about ourselves. It is the same with the Internet. Some of our students have deceptively taken other people’s identities including staff identities to access social networking sites in the school. This practice is totally unacceptable and its considered a crime – that of assuming another person’s identity and acting as that person. I must reiterate, never use another person’s identity, never give out your user names or passwords for others to use and never assume or use another person’s identity. As a parent some useful tips for allowing your children to access the internet at home could include: Showing an interest in what your children are visiting on the

internet. Get them to talk to you and show you things on the internet. Sit along side them and work with them so you can see what they are doing and what they are visiting.

Using blocking programs that block out certain types of sites. These can be purchased at computer stores. Just ask the sales people and they will be able to recommend to you the best software that suits your needs.

Limit the amount of time that your children are on the internet, have limits of so many hours an evening, have set bed times that are realistic and set times for when the internet is turned off each evening.

Locate your computers in family areas where you can supervise and see what your children are doing.

Talk to your children by setting agreements and limits to what sites they are visiting, instil that you trust them to be doing the correct thing.

The internet and technology are great tools for learning and being part of the modern 21st century, but with it brings new responsibilities for all. Technology is very much a part of today and we cannot avoid it, but we must use it responsibly. The Department of Education and Communities will be allowing access on student lap tops next term to social networking sites. These will need to be used responsibly and we will be looking at lessons with the students about how to use these sites. As students are accessing these on their laptops they are also monitored and filtered by the Department of Education and Communities. Our Year 7 and 9 students completed their NAPLAN a few weeks ago. Our students will get their results a little later in the year once all of the marking takes place and the collation of the results. There are so many wonderful things happening in the school. This edition of GLIDES highlights some of those things. Enjoy your reading. David Hargrave PRINCIPAL

This term has been a busy one with all years completing assessment tasks for semester one reports. Teachers have been busy finalising marking and writing reports and I thank them for all their hard work. I would like to remind both students and parents that in Weeks 9 and 10 there will be parent teacher interviews. In Week 9 on 22 June 2011 it will be for Year 8, 10 and 11. This will commence at 2:45 pm and in Week 10 it will be for Years 7 and 9 on the 29 June 2011. It will also commence at 2:45 pm. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to talk to their daughter’s teachers about their progress. Term 2 is also an important time for Year 12. A major focus this term will be supporting Year 12 in preparation for the Trial HSC Exams commencing Week 9 on 20 June 2011. Before that time, girls will be busy completing assessment tasks and revising work. Your daughter should have a study and revision program in place and be focused in being well prepared for these important exams. It is also necessary for me to remind all parents about the importance of keeping your family details up to date at school. In particular ensure that your address and phone details are current. At times we may need to contact home and you understand the concern when many phone numbers are either disconnected or incorrect. If you have changed your details recently or are unsure that our records are correct, please ask your daughter to collect a change of address form from the Front Office. I can’t stress enough the importance of maintaining correct records and thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter. Mrs C Screech DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

In Week 6 Term 1 Year 7 enjoyed learning about “My Place” and having a look at “Playground”, Nadia Wheatley’s latest book before it was released to the public. Yr 7 wrote thank you letters to Ms Wheatley expressing their appreciation of her work and presentation to them. "In the beginning of the year every Year 7 was given a copy of "My Place". We were given it to find a sense of belonging. In my case it succeeded and the results were exemplary. In no time I felt at home and comfortable with the new world around me (at LGHS)." Bojana Popovic 7I We will be having another author, Morris Gleitzman, visit in Term 3. Read Once, Then and Now about the Holocaust in WWII or spare a thought for Cane Toads in ‘Toad Rage’; even think about your own eating habits in ‘Worm Story’. A very humorous writer, Mr Gleitzman’s latest book is about how kids deal with world events which send the adult world into a spin! It is called “Too Small to Fail”. Read the first chapter on his web-site at www.morrisgleitzman.com Thank you again to our wonderful Library monitors who cope with all the changes in the Library and always offer their help cheerfully. In 2007 Deakin University in Melbourne, initiated an exciting new unit in which photography students from different universities, at both a national and global level, collaborated in pairs to produce creative responses to issues regarding contemporary urban and non-urban culture, environment and identity. I was lucky enough to see the Lecturers who developed this unit at a Technology conference and asked them if I could take and adapt it as a unit for Liverpool Girls’ High School. In 2005 I was lucky enough to go to America as a teacher exchange to work in an exciting school in Denver, Colorado called Horizon High School. I have kept in close contact with my friends I taught with there and as part of my University studies for my Honours paper, thought that the Suburb as Site project at Liverpool Girls’ needed a collaborator. Ms Suzi Melly the Photography teacher at Horizon agreed and we set up the photographic collaborations The Suburb As Site virtual gallery.

The Suburb as Site project has been built on the premise of collaboration in contemporary art, and the Internet has enabled it to develop and be implemented as a unit between our classrooms in Liverpool and in Denver. The Year 12 students here and the Photography students at Horizon take photographs of their suburbs as the subject of the images as series of works and post them into a micro-blog called edmodo. Last year in 2010, Year 7-12 Visual Arts students used edmodo for the Australia Council Artist in Schools project with Adam Hill. In edmodo, Horizon High School and year 12 PVDI student discuss their collections and images in class and online in the virtual collaborative site. They post about the images, and include posts about where they live, how we live here in South West Sydney and who lives here. Horizon High School is in Denver, in the middle of America. It is a gold rush town, as a city was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas Territory. Denver is one mile high above sea level where Sydney is a city at sea level. Denver is a semi-arid, continental climate zone with four distinct seasons and generally low annual precipitation. It is the sunniest city in America. The summers in Denver are hot and dry, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms and sometimes tornadoes. Winters are generally cool but can see sharp cold snaps; frequent periods of snow can alter with periods of warmth, it is currently still cold and snowy in Denver with it being in the Northern Hemisphere, it is now Spring and school finishes for the year soon in June. Due to its inland location on the High Plains, at the foot on the Rocky Mountains, weather patterns in Denver are subject to rapid, volatile changes. One day it’s sunny and warm, the next day you are snowed into your home with inches of snow at the door (& then you get a snow day!) By Ms K Coleman (Ms K Coleman has now started work at the University of NSW as a Design Educator) In the next edition of Glides we will put in photos by Year 12 student and their American friends.

On Tuesday the 5th of March Senior Constable Tony Fitzjohn came to Liverpool Girls High school to visit year 8 and year 7. He talked to the girls about digital safety and responsibility. He discussed the consequences of misusing mobile phones and social networking such as Facebook. Scientific research shows that 1 out of 14 people across our planet have a Facebook account; it also shows that girls are more advanced with the usage of Facebook. Officer Fitzjohn also told the girls how social networking can be affective such as stalking, bullying, luring and sexting. Remember online actions have offline consequences and to do in the online world as you do in the offline world. Also make sure you protect your personal details and don’t give them away to strangers. Thank you Senior Constable Fitzjohn for the visit. Shania Tuilaepa Year 9

Dear Year 7 Visual Arts Students, This is a post for you on a blog called Edmodo. We would like you to log on to this at home (the group code is 948rpq) as we will be using it as a discussion forum when we work with our graffiti artist later this term. Her name is Syked and she will be our artist in residence. By working with her we will be able to decide, once and for all, “is Graffiti Art”? Just like we did in our writing of our Persuasive text. Term 2 has seen SLC undertaking research into ways to improve our school. We have achieved our goal of getting the bathroom conditions upgraded & are now working on ways to keep things clean. We are examining how to lessen litter in the playground as this is becoming a bigger concern each day. When a few of our students attend Regional Meetings, this matter is discussed and a possible solution is on the way soon. The Regional Meetings provide an opportunity for us to connect with students from SLC’s at other schools and network about ideas. The rest of Term 2 will see more planning & a ‘Sweets Day’ being held as well as some Year 11’s attending a Leadership conference Term 3 will have more fundraising, hosting regional events and much more!

No explanations needed. The title here kind of speaks for itself doesn’t it? If any of you have any questions, comments or the like about any poem I’ve written so far please come and comment. You can also make suggestions to me for the next issue of glides. You’ll usually find me in the cafe every Monday and Tuesday but either than that I’m most likely to be in the library. Believe in peace... Peace.... Not hatred.

My Hatred, My Desire

My heart beats faster when you’re near My friends think it’s cute when you’re here

What they don’t know is something they can’t see It’s that there’s a hatred for you that burns in me

My only purpose is to beat you at your game I’ll do anything even make myself look lame

The shattered pieces of my heart Scream out for me to tear you apart

I don’t know why you can’t see my hatred

Even though my glares burn into your head? You don’t feel pain, you feel no fear

Just you wait, I’ll make you disappear

My friends are important, I love them all But I want to see your eyes begin to bawl

Cry in fear, I want to hear you scream! I want my revenge, to shatter your dream

My anger is why I’m still with you

For my lustful revenge there’s nothing I won’t do Until I feel that I’m satisfied

I’m going to have to swallow my pride

You should know better than to play with fire Because my hatred fuels my desire So run rabbit! Run rabbit! RUN!

Because destroying you is going to be so much fun

T’was a fine day on the 6th of the month May, when the maidens of Liverpool Girls’ High travelled to the field of Jacquie Osmond… “First… Second… And third!” On this day, all of Liverpool Girls’ High trekked to Jacquie Osmond field for the Annual Cross Country and Picnic Day. Armed with bags full of food, we travelled through dark tunnels, treacherously narrow sidewalks and rocky gravel roads.

Long distances we walked, under the fierce rays of the sun. We grumbled and moaned but kept marching on until we arrived at the figurative pot-o-gold at the end of the rainbow, the park. As soon as it was in sight, ladies dashed madly in order to pick the best spot to set up camp. Mats were laid, food was displayed and the girls were allowed a respite to relax before the races. There was food, games and laughter all round. As we took a walk,

we noticed enough food to be a feast, games worthy of a fair and more laughter than on the moon. We lazed around under the warm sun, playing games and having fun. Everyone was enjoying themselves, until the first announcement was made; it was time for the 17-year-olds to run. The seniors of the school were first to race, warming themselves up at the starting line. Some of the grins had been wiped off and replaced by competitiveness. And they were off! ‘Round the track they ran. We decided to take this opportunity to explore the rest the park when an enticing aroma wafted over from the area where the canteen was set up. It was in our duty to investigate! The delicious aroma was in fact, coming from the sausages sizzling on the BBQ.

A crowd had begun to form in the area, hoping to buy the very first hotdog in a soft bun. But that wasn’t all that was being sold; there were drinks and snacks galore! After we finished drooling over all the food, we realised that the winners were fast approaching the finish line. Thus the races continued throughout the day. When we weren’t running, we were eating, lying around or for those who couldn’t be still, there were games like cricket, volleyball and skipping to cater for them.

We saw people playing cards, listening to music, dancing and appreciating the wonderful day. The day slowly progressed in this fashion until an announcement was made to start cleaning and packing up. Grumbles were heard and people were reluctant to get up, but in the end, we all helped bring the park back to its natural glory. Now it was time to depart from the field of Jacquie Osmond. Woohoo! Our weary bodies made the long journey back to school where we were to assemble in Quad A for the moment we had all been waiting for; the announcement of the winners! So without further ado, the WINNERS!

On the 7th and 8th of March, Adam Hill, a professional Aboriginal artist of 12 years, visited Liverpool Girls High School.

On Thursday the 7th, Hill visited year 7 and showcased his best artworks. Adam Hill always carries an art book with him to sketch any inspirations he might see whilst on a train, ferry or even a stroll in the park. As well as painting on canvas, he is also a graphic designer and likes to photograph inspiring environments. He asked the girls on what they thought about his artwork and answered many of their interesting questions.

On Friday the 8th, Adam ran a workshop for the selected elective students in years 9 and 10. It was a very interesting and “free-minded” day. In the workshop, the girls experimented with techniques and the process Adam Hill uses when he creates his artworks. The girls were taught how to draw things such as a light bulb or sand using dots and lines. They experienced the different moods and representation of colours and learnt the magic of shading and smudging. Thank you Mr Adam Hill for the visit, we enjoyed it and had lots of fun. A group of students from southwest Sydney travelled to Darlinghurst’s National Art School for a four-day intensive course behind the easel during the school holidays. During the four day course we drew from life models and got tips from a practising artist. The course has really opened our minds and made us see art from a different perspective. Using the professional studios and materials has made the experience even more exciting. The tutors have taught us a lot and have encouraged and boosted our confidence in creating art works. The program ended with an exhibition of student’s works, where family members, friends and teachers could come and see the artworks. By Biljana Tesnjak and Jasmina Prodanic Year 11

In February this year, I was invited to audition for a spot in the “Acting for Screen” Course at the Young Actors Space in Los Angeles, California. I was one of 10 Australian kids who were accepted into the program and in April I flew to America with my mum. We stayed in an apartment complex right next to Warner Brothers Studios. As well as the 10 of us from Australia there were also kids from Canada, the UK and South Africa. We spent 2 weeks having acting classes and doing various workshops with Patrick Day and Nora Eckstein, who have trained people like Leonardo DeCaprio. We learnt also how difficult it is to get a working visa to be able to audition and accept roles in the US, it can take quite a long time and cost a lot of money, so you need to be passionate about acting to want to work hard enough to be successful. We were taught how to work on different American accents as well as working on improvisation skills and lots of other acting techniques specifically for acting in front of a camera. We had to learn scripts as well as prepare a monologue which we had to use for our auditions at the end of the program. I auditioned for Becky Silverman, the casting director for Criminal Minds and I also auditioned for Nickelodeon. We met casting agents and were introduced to producers and directors from all the main studios. We did a screen test and had a showreel made up of all our work. I made some great friends from all over the world and I learnt so much, as well as having the chance to leave my headshots and resume with people like Ron Howard, and you just never know, maybe someday there will be a part in an American TV show or movie that I am just perfect for!! I also got to go to Disneyland, Universal Studios, Hollywood Boulevarde, the Kodak Theatre, Madame Toussads Waxworks and heaps of really great places.

It was an early rise for many year 12 students on Thursday the 10th of March, since the coaches needed to be loaded with what appeared to be at least twice the amount of baggage one would think necessary for a one-night trip, some 60 students and be off by about quarter to eight in the morning. But the early start wasn’t as difficult as it sounds – it was probably more difficult to go to sleep the night before, actually. We were heading off for Canberra, and the spirited “choir” which amazingly kept up a non-stop karaoke scene down the back of one out of the two buses all the way through the three or so hour trip down there really was a testament to our excitement. Year 12 students who did at least one out of the four science subjects were present: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Senior Science. If we did Physics or Senior Science, we were put onto a coach which was sent straight for “The Deep Space Centre” at Tidbinbilla, a little South of Canberra. If we only did Chemistry, Biology, or both, our first stop was CSIRO, where we were treated to two workshops using equipment we would never have had access to back at school. Mrs Brett and Mr Tallan took the Physics and Senior Science students, while Mr Sodeau, Miss Sullivan and Ms Burton all bravely took the plunge to what could end up as potential insanity when they found themselves on the same bus as the Biology and Chemistry students. At CSIRO, the first thing we wanted was a lunch break, after such a long time in the coach. Then we were taken to the “Green Machine Science Education Centre”. Split into two smaller groups yet again, we then completed two workshops: “DNA on the move”, in which we were to prove a mock forensic

case in barley cereals using a technique called electrophoresis, and “Jumping Jelly Genes”, where we actually created a variety of bacteria which can glow! Well, even with two days to reap the benefits of Canberra, we were still on a pretty tight schedule, and by 5:30pm we were all unloading at the place where we were staying in Canberra.

Before the camp we had organised groups of four to share a room with, so it was quite a smooth process having our rooms allocated, but lo and behold, as soon as some sixty 16 to 18 year olds (on average, of course) are loosed on multiple hallways of rooms, you can’t possibly expect us to remain in our own area. I think there were more people in the hallways at any one moment than in the rooms. After a dinner of salad, chips and fish, we were offered a few choices: hang around in the rooms, go off to a nearby cafe or go and see a movie. Those that chose the movie option watched The Adjustment Bureau, but just as many students were happy to hang out at the cafes, enjoying late night Canberra. One would assume that with a busy day ahead of them, everyone would go and get a good night’s sleep. But the excitement of having so many of their friends around them was just too much for many and there’s the feeling that not much sleeping happened at all on Thursday night.

Friday morning was another fairly early start, as a breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast was served at 7:15am and we were expected to be packed and loaded by 8am. The groups switched to go to the destinations they hadn’t been the day before which meant that Group A was off to NASA in Tidbinbilla. The road down there was quite nauseating,

to say the least, but once there we met up with our guide who filled us in on the important work they do with their satellite dishes, the history of NASA and astronomy and some very interesting information about the solar system and their research into the vast universe where we really are just a small speck amongst it all. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and after a nice lunch beside a river we were in for the long trip back home. Not surprisingly, there wasn’t as much song and cheer to tune into at the back of the coach this time. All in all, this year’s science camp to Canberra was the kind of experience that leaves you wanting more and wishing it were longer. By Rochelle Witt Year 12

April 29th 2011 was a memorable day around the world as an audience of two billion people watched the wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine Middleton. The build-up to the wedding and the occasion itself attracted much media attention, with the service being broadcast live around the world, and being compared and contrasted in many ways with the 1981 marriage of William's parents, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. Kate Middleton wore a white dress with a 270-centimetre train, by British designer Sarah Burton, as well as a tiara lent to her by the Queen. Prince William wore the uniform of his honorary rank of Colonel of the Irish Guards. William's best man was his brother, Prince Harry, while the bride's sister, Pippa, acted as her maid of honour. Kate’s dress was a beautiful representation of old-world class with touches of modernity. With its fitted bodice, long, lace sleeves and sweeping 2.7m train, the dress drew comparisons with Princess Grace's wedding gown. Kate’s dress is being hailed as a triumph around the world. A bit of royalty also visited LGHS on the 29th April as princesses arrived wearing a tiara to school to celebrate the royal wedding. Also there was a tiny royal feast at the library where royal biscuits and fairy breads were served.

The girl’s wore red to represent the Red Cross which is where the money will be going to help the families of Japan. Well done to all the girls who participated in this event and donated towards being the helping hands. Did you know?

• There are over 10,000 people dead and there were many bodies that washed out to sea that cannot be found.

• Not only dead, but many people are still missing. • The money we raised will be going towards, getting medicine,
