ANZAC COMMEMORATION The College held a formal ANZAC Commemoration Assembly on Wednesday, 24 April. It was held in the Gymnasium and the whole College attended. STEM BUILDING PROJECT As parents and students would be aware, the College is involved in the construction of a STEM Centre (which will be sited next to A Block). Early next week 14 modules, which will be re-assembled to create our four new teaching spaces, will be transported to our College and craned in and assembled. In the following 5 - 6 weeks, the rooms will be ‘fitted out’ and we are confident that our two new Senior Laboratories, the General Science Laboratory and our ‘maker space’ will all be ready for student use at the start of Term 3.

ENROLMENT ZONES AND ENROLMENT CAP With many prospective parents and students currently involved in Tours of secondary schools across the state, DE&T has very recently revised the ‘rules’ for schools enrolling students. There are few changes that will impact on Norwood, but some schools will certainly find their capacity to be selective in who they choose to enrol, from students who are not in their zone, will be changed. As previously, any student who lives within the geographical zone allocated to a school has an automatic right to be enrolled, if they choose. Their school is termed their ‘designated neighbourhood public school’. Anyone can apply for any school other than their designated neighbourhood public school, but there are rules that affect the outcome of the enrolment request. A school must enrol ‘out of zone requests’ in order of closest to furthest from the boundary of the zone. Most schools have been allocated an enrolment cap and schools must be mindful of the cap as they enrol. DE&T has clarified their Placement Policy and schools are obliged to follow it in determining the enrolments of any student from outside the zone. The Placement Policy defines the order in which requests for enrolments for students who reside outside the school’s zone must be considered.

PRIORITY ORDER OF PLACEMENT The Department’s Placement Policy indicates that where there are insufficient places at a school, for all students who seek entry, students are enrolled in the following priority order:

Students for whom the school is the designated neighbourhood school.

Students with a sibling at the same permanent address who are attending the school at the same time.

Where the Regional Director has restricted the enrolment, students who reside nearest the school.

Students seeking enrolment on specific curriculum grounds.

All other students in order of closeness of their home to the school.

In exceptional circumstances, compassionate grounds.

It is our desire, at Norwood, to accommodate all Year 7 students who have made the decision that Norwood Secondary College is the ‘right place’ for them….irrespective of whether they are in or out of our zone. Andrew Sloane, School Principal

UNIFORM CHANGEOVER Students have now had the opportunity to wear either the Summer or Winter uniform for the first 2 weeks of Term 2. As of Monday, 6 May all students are expected to wear the full winter uniform. Boys are reminded that this means wearing long trousers, not shorts and girls are reminded to wear black tights when wearing the winter skirt.

SHINE A LIGHT ON ROAD SAFETY Unfortunately too many loved ones lose their lives on our roads every year. More than 6000 Victorians are killed or seriously injured. As a school we would like to promote the campaign to raise awareness, to stop deaths and injuries on our roads and to raise funds to support those impacted by road trauma. #shinealightonroadsafety There are many ways to either raise awareness or show your support:

1. On Friday, 10 May 2019 turn on your headlights to demonstrate commitment to road safety.

2. Join the Shine a Light on Road Safety Campaign in Melbourne at 11am on Sunday, 5 May 2019 for a BBQ and community walk at Albert Park Lake. To register for the walk and/or set up a sponsorship page visit the website www.rtssv.org.au

3. Make a donation by visiting the website www.rtssv.org.au From Monday, 6 May to Sunday, 12 May, you might notice that Australian landmarks will be illuminated in yellow as part of National Road Safety Week. This provides an opportune time to discuss road safety with your children and the terrible impact if can have on families. Road Trauma Support Services Victoria offers free information and counselling to anyone impacted by a road crash 1300 367 797 or www.rtssv.org.au As a school, let’s show our support on Friday, 10 May and turn our headlights on. Jackie Harris, Senior School Principal

MERIT AWARDS The introduction of a Merit Award System will be in effect for all students from Monday, 6 May. The purpose of the Award System is to recognise student citizenship and achievement in upholding the College Values of Respect, Responsibility, Aspiration and Resilience. We look forward to acknowledging the positive actions, efforts and contributions of our students!

NAPLAN Students in Year 7 and 9 will complete NAPLAN Testing on the Tuesday, 14, Wednesday, 15 and Thursday, 16 May. The NAPLAN test results provides you and your child’s teachers with information on how your child is progressing against national standards. This information also informs us as to where we need to differentiate the curriculum to meet the learning needs of every child and ensure all students are being appropriately challenged. NAPLAN does not replace, but rather complements, assessments run by your child's teachers throughout the year.

NAPLAN also provides the College with data that details the educational growth of each student and the cohort from Year 7 to Year 9. In 2016, 2017 and 2018, Norwood Secondary College had one of the highest NAPLAN Relative Growth results for students in Year 7 to Year 9 out of all the State Secondary Schools in the Outer East Region. We are very proud of this achievement and eagerly await the 2019 data.

Please encourage your child to give their best effort when completing the NAPLAN testing.

HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Under the blue skies of a brilliant autumn day, students and staff enjoyed yet another wonderful day out at the Annual House Athletics Carnival. It was a great day, highlighted by terrific participation and many hotly-contested events. The day began with the traditional parade, with students putting on a fun, colourful and creative display of costumes, before the more serious athletics events began. Many students also took time out to enjoy the fun novelty events including the four-way tug-of-war, tunnel ball and 3 legged races.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL COMPETITORS WHO PARTICIPATED IN ATHLETICS and NOVELTY EVENTS. It was fantastic to see many students taking themselves out of their comfort zone by just ‘giving it a go’ or ‘trying something new’. Each year we also see many students pushing themselves to the limit; running their fastest or jumping and throwing further than they ever have before in search of breaking event records, collecting points for their House Team or the glory of being awarded Age Group Champions. A very big congratulations to the following students who were named 2019 Athletics Age Group Champions: 13 Year Champions: Cailin Stubbings

Bailey O’Riley 14 Year Champions: Matilda Broadhurst

Brodie Smith 15 Year Champions: Alicia Pumpa

Jacob Christie 16 Year Champions: Olivia Kiefte

Congratulations to YARRA House who were the 2019 ‘Athletics Team Champions’ on the day. It came down to the very last event of the day, the Year 12 Boy’s 4 x 100m relay, to decide 2nd and 3rd placings. This last event placed Maroondah a mere 7 points in front of Kalinda to determine our final team results: 1. Yarra 1846 points 2. Maroondah 1406 points 3. Kalinda 1399 points 4. Mullum 1039 points

At each Carnival we also award the ‘Team Spirit’ trophy. This award is based on points that students accumulate for showing team spirit through helping staff at both track and field events, assisting with additional tasks they may be assigned, cheering on their fellow students and for demonstrating initiative on the day. Well done to Maroondah House who was awarded the trophy for this year’s Athletics Carnival. I would like to thank the House Captains and Vice Captains for their assistance in signing students up for events, data entry leading up to the Carnival and filling relay events with team members on the day. Our Carnivals could not run without the commitment of our expert staff. A very BIG thank you to all staff who worked tirelessly on the day, ensuring the smooth running of track and field events, confirming results and entering data. Thank you!

YEAR 10 APPLIED SCIENCE MELBOURNE ZOO EXCURSION Year 10 Applied Science and General Science students went to the Melbourne Zoo on Thursday, 2 May to explore different animals for their adaptations for thermoregulations. This was part of the Biology unit on classifications and adaptations. All the students had work booklets to complete during the excursion. Students had to make specific note of the animal’s natural habitat and country of origin and to list some of the environmental (abiotic) factors that affect the animals living there. They were also required to find the scientific name and diet of the Red Panda, Snakes, Elephants, Penguins and Seals in addition to any other animal of their choice. Students explored the structural/physical, behavioural and physiological adaptations of these animals as part of their assessment. It was a nice excursion and the students enjoyed the day. ANTIPODEANS ABROAD Every second year, Norwood Secondary College students in Years 10 and 11 are provided an opportunity to participate in the Antipodeans Abroad program. In 2018, a group of students and staff travelled to Vietnam and Laos for three weeks to sight-see across both countries, trek through Sapa and be completely immersed within a local Laos community through a home-stay experience. “Great cultural experience – we saw so much! We had to plan pretty much everything, and figure out how to budget…I felt like we really developed our leadership skills.” Cam “10/10! Most amazing experience of my entire life, really opened my eyes to how lucky I am to live how I do.” Ellie

In 2020, the Antipodeans Abroad trip will be to Peru, South America. Information will be presented to students in relevant year level assemblies over the coming weeks, and a Parent Information Evening is scheduled for Thursday, 23 May from 6pm-6.45pm. We encourage any current Year 9 and 10 students (and their families) to attend! To get inspired for this destination, feel free to check out https://antipodeans.com.au/peru

MEET OUR MUSIC CAPTAIN JOSHUA GROOME "Hi everyone, I’m Joshua Groome, Music Captain for 2019. I’ve been involved with music at Norwood since day one of my high school journey, way back in 2014. I started my journey playing Trombone, which lasted a few weeks before discovering the Tuba. I’ve done Tuba exams and played in the school bands ever since, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. After a few years, I also decided to pick up singing to help me develop musically (and help me for the school production). That was 2016, and since then I’ve been involved in the school choirs as well. As it stands now, I play and sing in the Concert Band, Jazz Band, A Capella Choir and Chorale. On top of this, I’ve also undertaken VCE Music Performance, and consequently, music is a huge part of my life. Outside of school I busk, play the Drums and play in an English Brass Band. These hobbies I intend to keep constant for as long as I can. Music has given me some of my best friends and fondest memories which I’ll carry with me for years to come."

Joshua Groome, Music Captain

BEANIES NOT MEANIES

KOGO is very proud to be partnering with the Alannah & Madeline Foundation and Lincraft Stores to run an anti-bullying awareness project in 2019. The Alannah & Madeline Foundation will put the beanies into their Buddy Bags (these are backpacks filled with basic essential items for thousands of children in emergency accommodation) in the lead up to winter. STEP 1: For this worthwhile project, we are asking our volunteers to knit or crochet a purple beanie (for primary school aged children and adults). We have chosen purple as it is the colour used by Alannah & Madeline Foundation and because we want to make an impact by standing out in the crowd to help stamp out bullying. Please support the project by visiting any Lincraft Stores and purchasing the specially-dyed purple yarn. Of course, you are very welcome to use your own favourite pattern or yarn as long as it is purple! STEP 2: Small "Beanies not Meanies" badges will also be on sale in Lincraft Stores to attach to your beanie if you want. All proceeds from the sale of the badges will go to Alannah & Madeline Foundation.

COMMUNITY NEWS

IMPORTANT REMINDERS REGARDING EVENTS AND REFUNDS Norwood SC encourages all students to participate in Camps and Excursions. We understand that sometimes a student needs to withdraw from participating after payment is made. It is important that parents/guardians realise that payments cannot be automatically refunded and the request for a refund must be made in writing. Below is an extract from our College policy reviewed in April 2019:

Where no cost is incurred by the College, a full refund shall be payable provided that:

The student’s place is filled by another student.

The College deems the student’s withdrawal was unavoidable.

For illness a Doctor certificate will be required.

A partial refund shall be payable to the student withdrawing when:

The College deems the student’s withdrawal was unavoidable but has incurred expenses relating to the withdrawal. In such cases, the refund will be the amount paid by the student, less expenses incurred by the College as a result of the withdrawal.

Deposits should be considered non-refundable. Requests for deposit refunds will be considered on a case by case basis. Refunds will only be given when requested in writing within 21 days of the excursion taking place or the commencement of the camp. Please contact the General Office (9871 0400), not teaching staff, if you request a refund. Carefully read the event description before you pay on Compass School Manager.

CSEF Camps, Sports and Excursion Funding is provided to Centrelink benefit holders by the Government. It cannot be used for School Charges, Uniform, Books, Music, Graduations/Formals or other expenses unrelated to Camps, Sports or Excursions. When parents/guardians want to pay for an event with CSEF, it cannot be paid through Compass School Manager.

Instead of pressing the red button, press the grey button on Compass to print out the event permission form. Then sign the form and write “Pay with CSEF” on the bottom of the page. The form must be returned to the General Office, not teaching staff. The due date on the form is still applicable, whether payment is by cash, credit card or CSEF.

Norwood Secondary College is once again registered for the Earn and Learn Program. Back in 2017 we collected 10 000 stickers. This year we hope to beat this amount. If you shop at Woolworths please get involved and collect stickers for Norwood. We have a collection box at Eastland Woolworths and Croydon Woolworths as well as in the General Office at school. Remember program starts on the Wednesday, 1 May so get shopping!

Who can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers and how long can they be collected for? Anyone who shops at Woolworths from 12.01am Wednesday, 1 May until on 11.59pm Tuesday, 25 June 2019 can

collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers, while stocks last.

How much do I need to spend to get Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers? A single Sticker will be given to a customer with every $10 spent in a single transaction at Woolworths

Supermarkets, Woolworths Metro and Woolworths Online (www.woolworths.com.au) , excluding money spent on Excluded Purchases, during the Promotional Period, while stocks last. By purchasing a Participating Brand product you will receive a bonus two stickers (while stocks last). See www.woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn for the full list of Participating Brands.

Are there any products for which Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers are not provided? Excluded Purchases: Smoking/tobacco products and accessories, alcohol, mobile recharge, Woolworths mobile,

travel cards and tickets, cash outs, lottery products and gift cards (including iTunes); carpet care products, donations, delivery, bag and crate service fees. For online orders, the minimum purchase amount for each Pick up order is $30 and for each Delivery order is $50 excluding the delivery, bag and any crate service fee. Qualifying Spend is calculated after all discounts and exclusions have been applied to the order. Purchases at other Woolworths Group outlets (including but not limited to BIG W, BWS or Dan Murphy’s outlets, whether attached to or separate from a Woolworths supermarket) and Caltex/Woolworths co-branded fuel outlets are not eligible for this Promotion.

Are there any other ways to collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers? As a customer: To collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Points, customers need to shop at a Woolworths

supermarket. If you shop online, your Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers will be delivered with your groceries (while stocks last).
