GoalsforBehaviourManagement

AtAl-TaqwaCollege,weaimtodevelopourstudentscharacter,promotepositivebehaviour andpromoteasafe,respectfulandcaringenvironmentforallstudentsandteachers.Thiswillenableourstudentstobettermanagedifficultandstressfulsituations,developselfcontrolandmasteryinmanagingthemselves,theirbehaviourandrelationships.ThiswillallowthemtoreflectupontheirchoicesinordertomakethenecessarychangestotheirbehaviourasglobalMuslimcitizens.

ThePrimarySchoolsupportsthewelfareandwellbeingofstudents,theirfamiliesandstaff.TheSchoolcounsellorsalsoaimtoprovideassistancestoaccess relevantservicesandinformation,andsupportstudentsindividuallyoringroupsettings.

Theseguidelineswillbeforstudents,staffandparents.

Thesuccessofthisprocessisbasedupontherecognitionoftheself-respectandworthofallstudents,staffandparents.

AllStaffMembersareto:

RestorativeJusticeandBehaviourManagement

Restorativepracticesisanemergingfieldofstudythatenablespeopletorestoreandbuildcommunityinanincreasinglydisconnectedworld. (www.iirp.org)

Restorativepracticeisanapproachthatenablestherepairofrelationshipsthathavebeendamaged,includingthosedamagedthroughbullying.Itdoesthisbybringingaboutasenseofremorseandrestorativeactiononthepartoftheoffenderandforgivenessbythevictim.Thismethodisnotaboutsimplypunishingoffenders,butratherholdsoffendersaccountablefortheirerrors,whichmayhelpreducereoffending.

Aschoolthatappliesrestorativepracticeaimstoallowthevictimsandoffendersandtheirrespectivecommunitiesofcaretobeactiveparticipantsinprocessesthatensureequaljusticeandfairness.

Therationalebehindthisapproachisthatwhenoffendersreflectupontheirharmtovictims:

• Theybecomeremorsefulandactrestoratively.• Practitionerscanfocusontheunacceptablebehaviourofoffendersratherthantheirmoral

character• Healthierinterpersonalrelationsdevelopedamongmembersoftheschoolcommunity.

1. Restorativepracticecanbeundertakeninavarietyofforums.Itmaybeconductedwithvaryingdegreesofformalityandmayincludejustthosestudentsmostdirectlyinvolvedinbullyingorinsomecircumstancesawholeclass.‘CommunityConferences’includesupportivethirdpartiessuchasfriends,familiesandpossiblyacommunityfiguresuchasapolicecommunityliaisonofficer.Thisforumisusedtoaddressconcernsofbothindividualsandthewidercommunity.

2. Theworkinschoolswithcasesofbullyingiscommonlyguidedbyflashcardsoranagreedscriptwhichdirectpractitionerstoasktheoffendertodescribewhathappenedandtoreflectonwhatharmwasdone.Thevictimisaskedtosayhowsheorhehasbeenaffectedandwhatneedstobedonetomakeamends.

3. Feelingsofshamethatareelicitedneedtoleadtore-integrationintothecommunityratherthanasenseofbeingalienatedandstigmatised.

4. Inthespiritofpersonalresponsibility,forgivenessandcommitmenttopositivefuturebehaviour,boththevictimandtheoffenderexpresstheiracceptanceoftheproposedsolution/sanddiscusswhatcanbedonetopreventarecurrence.

5. Thesituationisthenmonitoredbyschoolstaffmembersandfurtherinterventionoccursifthesituationdoesnotimprove.

Restorativequestions:Studentsshouldbeinacalmstatebeforeaskingthebelowquestions.

SomeofthetypicalRestorativeQuestionsincludes:

Regardingmisbehaviour:• Whathappened?• Whatwereyouthinkingofatthetime?• Whathaveyouthoughtofsince?• Whohasbeenaffectedbywhatyouhavedone? Inwhatway?• Whatdoyouthinkyouneedtodotomakethingsright?

Tohelpthoseaffected:• Whatdidyouthinkwhenyourealizedwhathadhappened?• Whatimpacthasthisincidenthadonyouandothers?• Whathasbeenthehardestthingforyou?• Whatdoyouthinkneedstohappentomakethingsright?

Restorativepracticescanalsobeappliedtoothermisbehaviours,suchasansweringbacktoteachersorvandalisingschoolproperty.Itallowsstudentstorightthewrongthathasbeendone.Itprovidesaplatformforstudentstoworkthroughproblems/misbehaviours andallowsthemtocollaborativelycometoasolution,butalsoensuresthattheyaredealtwithinarespectfulmanner.

Repercussionsshouldfitthemisbehaviour andstudentsshouldbegiventheopportunityto‘rightthewrong’.Punitivemeasureswilloftenhavethereverseeffectofwhatweintendandresultsinresentmentandfurtherbullyingifgiveninresponsetoabullyingincident.Arestorativeprocesswillalsogivestudentsavoice,boththevictimandtheoffenderandensuresstudentsaredealtwithfairly.

Theteacher–studentrelationshipisoneofthemostpowerfulelementswithinthelearningenvironment.Apositiverelationshipbetweenteachersandstudentsmayinfluenceastudent’sacademicoutcomesandbehaviour.Supportiveandpositiverelationshipsbetweenteachersandstudentscanpromotea“senseofschoolbelonging”andencouragestudentsto“participatecooperativelyinclassroomactivities”.

Someofthewaysthatteacherscanfosterapositiverelationshipwiththeirstudentsincludes:

• APositiveclassroomenvironment• Followingupwithparentswhenstudentsareawayorhaveproblemsathome.• Greetingstudentswhilstenteringtheclassroom• Recognisingandacknowledginggoodbehaviour

Thebestwayofdealingwithschoolmisbehaviourisbypreventingit.Schoolswitheffectivedisciplinestrategiesnotonlycorrectmisbehaviourbutalsoteachappropriatebehaviourandcopingskills.

Preventionstrategiesinclude:

• Establishingclearbehaviourexpectationsandguidelines.• Communicatingtherelevantschoolpoliciestostudents.• Discussingbehaviormanagementasaregularagendaitem.• DevelopingIndividualbehaviormanagementplans.• Supportingandguidingnewstaffthroughmentoringandcoaching.• Liaisingwiththeschool’sStudentsServicesDepartmentandCounsellingteamforongoing

Thisguidelineisaimedtoprovidestudents,teachersandparentswithvaluableresourcesandstrategiestobuildandsustainthewellbeingofthewholeschoolcommunity.Parentsareencouragedtogothroughtheseguidelineswiththeirchild(ren),talktothemabouttheirexpectationsandhowtheycouldbothworkwiththeschoolcommunitytoensureamorepositiveacademicexperience.

Parentscanplayanactiveroleinencouragingpositivebehavioursthatleadtorespectfulrelationshipsfreefrombullyingandharassment,bymaintaininganopenandhonestcommunicationwiththeirchildren.

Parentsandcarerscansupporttheirchild/ren andtheschoolbyactivelycontributingtotheschoolcommunityandbuildingapositivecommunicationwiththeirchild’steacher.

Thecorrectivebehaviourmanagementpolicyistofacilitateaconsistent,transparentandfairadministrationofstudentbehaviourmanagementacrosstheschool,whereadultinterventionisrequired.

ThisinturnwillensuredueprocessforVRQA complianceandadherencetoourrestorativeapproach.

Thisguidelineensuresthatstudentsarenotdeprivedoftheirbasicrights(example:learning,health,personalsafety,dignityandrighttoconfidentiality).Studentsmustbegiventheopportunitytobeheardandtheirsideofthestorytold.

TheCorrectiveBehaviourManagementGuidelineisdividedintofourcategories,minor,medium,majorandextreme.
