Coogee Primary School 1 It is quite sad to be writing my last newsletter at Coogee Primary School. While I am looking forward to a new challenge in my next role as Principal at Upper Swan Primary School, I leave a brilliant school community which I feel very much a part of. I will always value the time I have spent at CPS. I am so grateful for the widespread support that I have received from our staff, P & C, School Board, parents, carers grandparents and our wonderful students. The famous Dr Seuss quote, Dont cry because its over. Smile because it happened, is quite apt at this time. I will always be grateful for the opportunity and privilege to be Principal at Coogee Primary School. Thank you to all who have made the past three and half years such a positive and memorable experience. It is hard to believe that the end of the term is almost upon us! Even though it has been an eleven week term it has been busy and the time has certainly flown by.

Student Permissions We have an increasing number of students, some of them are regulars, who are not returning permission slips by the specified cut-off date. We send reminders on to parents on Connect and students are regularly reminded at school about the importance of returning their permissions on time. Parents need to be aware that we are not dealing with a few of these. We had 46 students who did not return their permission slip for the recent incursion.

It is not reasonable to expect our office staff to sift through banking deposits just in case a parent has done a money transfer, or phone every parent that has not submitted a permission slip.. It is a student and parent responsibility to en-sure permissions are returned on time. I understand how these things can be overlooked and that is why we send re-minders. However, if these reminders are not read or acted on, it cannot be the schools fault for a student missing out. This is a case of personal responsibility; which parents should not attempt to abrogate to the school. I ask all parents to be vigilant with Connect messages and to be aware of the work that is involved in policy compliance, and money and note collection. Help us to ensure your child does not miss out.

Student Road Safety We cover Road Safety in our curriculum, and we regularly remind the students about safe road practices, particularly on bikes and scooters. However, we continue to get complaints from the community about students in Coogee uniforms dangerously riding bikes or scooters on the road and not following road rules. I am asking all parents and carers to speak to their children about the importance of safety on our roads. We will continue to cover this at school, and we will look at running more road safety activities. I am concerned about the number of near misses that are reported, and the possibility of one of our students being seriously injured or worse.

Mobile Phones and Smart Watches Information was sent home on Connect outlining the Education Department’s policy on mobile phone use in schools. The number of students wearing smart watches has become an issue at Coogee Primary School. We have a school poli-cy on this, as we are required to do, and all students must hand in mobile phones and smart watches at the start of the day and collect them at the end of the day. The Department of Education’s policy on this is very clear:

The Department of Education does not permit students the use of mobile phones (including smart watches) in public schools unless for medical purposes. The use or possession of such devices are banned from the time students arrive at school to the conclusion of the school day.

It is the principal’s responsibility to apply all Department Policies. Please support us with the implementation of this policy.

Scooter Racks Some time ago Cameron Pratt proposed the idea of having scooter racks at our school, with the intent to reduce congestion in the bike racks and to keep scooters safe. His idea has become a reality, and today our new scooter racks have arrived and have been installed. Thanks to Cameron for his foresight and lead to initiate this project. The racks have been funded by the P & C who ran a Bunnings sausage sizzle to fund the racks. Again, a massive shout out Michael Montgomery who organised the sausage sizzle and to Cameron’s parents and other parents who were there to support the sausage sizzle. This is another great example of “student voice” resulting in a great outcome for our students and the school.

Chocolate Fund Raiser The response to our Chocolate Fund raiser has been enormous! Thank you to all of the families that have sold boxes, and a special thanks to those who have sold multiple boxes. The money raised for the P & C should be significant (the money is still coming in), and of course that all flows over to benefit our students. Also, a big thanks to the P & C, particularly Deanne Coleman and Michael Montgomery for all of their behind the scenes work to make it happen.

Spellathon The Spellathon money was due by Wednesday this week, but if you haven’t returned it yet please get it in to the office

asap. We will announce the total raised before the end of term. The student who raises the most amount of money will receive a $100 prize. Students from each year level who score 100% will go into a draw for a $20 voucher. This is the school’s major fundraiser to support our Year Six camp, so we are hopeful for a great response on this fundraiser too.

Students Online in Public School – Third Party Services Providers The Department of Education (the Department) provides online services to students in public schools for learning-related activities and makes every reasonable effort to educate and protect students from exposure to inappropriate online material and activities. Access to the Department of Education online services enhances contemporary learning opportunities as well as a range of teaching tools for staff to deliver the Western Australian Curriculum. In 2021 all schools are required to send home Consent Letters to Parents/Carers to seek approval for students to access various online teaching and learning services. Early next term you will receive a package. If you have any further queries please contact Fleur Hargreaves 6595 4900.

SPORT NEWS

Winter Lightning Carnival Congratulations to all students who participated in our Winter Lightning Carnival last week. This Carnival requires a lot of preparation and could not happen without the dedication of Mr Maatman. Thank you to our wonderful teachers, EA’s and parent helpers for their invaluable time and commitment during all of our weekly training sessions and on the day. It is hard to get parent helpers to come out and help so we do really appreciate your efforts. Thank you, also to our students who once again demonstrated good behavior, enthusiasm and great team work. All teams, across all sports put in an amazing effort. Our new interschool shirts, kindly donated by the P&C looked fantastic!
