Transcript of Primary Data VMworld 2015 VVOLs Survey Key Findings
October 2015VMworld U.S. Survey
2
Methodology
Survey was conducted at VMworld 2015 in San Francisco
Live survey intercepts
355 responses
3
Key Findings
Most of the enterprise is now virtualized
Much interest in VVOLs, but it is early days
Challenges are holding back VVOL implementation
4
Most of the Enterprise is Now Virtualized
Nearly half have virtualized more than 80 percent of their infrastructure
73 percent have virtualized more than 60 percent
5
Much Interest in VVOLs, but it is Early Days
60 percent involved with VVOLs in some way– Yet, just 7 percent have
completed VVOL installation
Why? Top drivers include:– Simplify storage– Improve storage scalability– Improve VM manageability
6
Challenges are Holding Back VVOL Implementation
Lack of VVOL expertise within IT staff
Performance issues
Migration issues
43 percent cite incomplete VVOL support from their storage vendor as a challenge
7
Primary Data Recommendations
Examine how data virtualization can complement server virtualization to further optimize datacenter efficiency and cost savings
Enable universal VVOL support with existing storage through data virtualization
Simplify VVOL management to streamline IT learning curve
