FOUTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Dear Parishioners,

The Scripture reading of these Sun-days of Lent place three significant sym-bols of our faith before us: water, light and life. This fourth Sunday in Lent, we have the gospel story which tells us the wonderful story of what Jesus did for a person he met in the streets of Jerusalem. He was “blind from birth.” Jesus spreads the mud on the man’s eyes, say-ing to him “Go wash in the pool of Silo-am.” Then he went and washed and came back “able to see.” Jesus worked this miracle without him being asked for it. He does this miracle in the streets of Jeru-salem, that is, in a public place with a view to make it known, and it is done on behalf of one known to all, to be blind from his birth.

The whole story of the miracle is meant to teach us about Jesus himself. He says; “I am the light of the world” (Jn 9: 5). Jesus gives the man his sight so that we might understand that he alone can give us the light we need to see things as they really are. He alone can make us understand the full truth about others and ourselves, about our life and its destiny. Jesus tells us: “I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (Jn 8:12).

The name of the pool of “Siloam” means “sent.” Jesus himself is the one sent by the Father for the life of the world. The pool where the man was sent to wash his eyes is symbolic of Jesus own role as the Messiah, the one sent to wash away our sins, to redeem us through his death and resurrection, to purify us through the water of Baptism.

We are called during this season of Lent to proclaim the joyful message that “the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned” (Mt 4:16). Each one of us, we are called to offer to today’s world the light of Christ.

From the Desk of the Pastor / Del Escritorio del Parroco CUARTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA

Queridos Feligreses,
