OBJECTIVES
Define Contamination & DecontaminationIdentify different contaminants & Routes
of contaminationUnderstand the concepts of exposure &
contaminationIdentify the physical & chemical methods
of decontamination
![Page 3: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
OBJECTIVES
Given a simulated hazardous materials scenario, as a team, demonstrate the ability to set up a contamination reduction corridor and perform decontamination
![Page 4: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
EXPOSURE vs. CONTAMINATION
A person who has been contaminated may have not been exposed
The term exposure is used to differentiate between simple contact & contact with the potential of causing harm or illness
![Page 5: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
HEALTH EFFECTS
Acute Start when you come in contact with hazmat Can be temporary, or become chronic or fatal Small amounts of some hazmats can be
immediately fatal
![Page 6: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
METHODS OF DECONTAMINATION
Dilution/washing Most commonly used method of decontamination Simple use water (maybe with soap) to dilute & wash off contaminant Add a little scrubbing and most contaminants will wash offExample
Washing hands
![Page 7: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
METHODS OF DECONTAMINATION
Isolation/disposal Simple as putting
contaminant in bag or drum
Often end stage beforetransporting
Often expensive to dispose of
![Page 8: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
METHODS OF DECONTAMINATION
Solidificationaka Dry Decontamination Used when it involves low-toxicitymaterials & vapors, gas, or has a high vapor density Used for removing PPE when task has been completed
![Page 9: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
DECISION MAKING
Fast BreakQuick emergency decon of
contaminated patientsLong Term
Slow planed decon of all
![Page 10: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
MASS DECONUsed only for decon
of victimsOften used in WMD
incidentsCan go from a simple hose to multiple engine companiesHardest part is keeping deconed victims from contaminated
victimsConvincing victims of necessity may be difficult
![Page 11: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
ONE STAGE AT A TIME
Decon area should be divided into stages Number determined by contaminate &
resources availableEntry at hot zone with exit in cold zoneDesign should be systematic with care
taken not to contaminate stages further out
![Page 12: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
DECON AGENTS
Isopropyl alcoholUsed with isocyanates Can be flammable
![Page 13: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
WATER REACTIVITY
Will it react with water?Examples
Sodium metalLime powder
Placard Group 4 chemicalsCan they be dusted, blown, or vacuumed off the body?
![Page 14: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
CONTAINMENT
Can runoff be contained?
![Page 15: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
PROPER PROCEDURES
Have procedures been preplanned for decon station?
![Page 16: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
EQUIPMENT DROP
First stop in decon areaUsed to deposit contaminated tools
![Page 17: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
SHOWERSUsed to rinse contaminant off ` PPE or patient
![Page 18: PREVIEW OF HAZMAT TECHNICIAN DECONTAMINATION TRAINING PRESENTATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5886c3c21a28abcc7d8b595f/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
DECON TEAM LEADER
Ensures entry team is deconed in proper order
Watches for cross contaminationOversees removal & isolation of
contaminated PPE Monitors overall effectiveness & safety of
decon operation
