Joke from an E-mail sent to me by L. Dugar: I had a power outage at my house this morning and my PC, laptop, TV, DVD, iPad and my new surround sound music system were all shut down. Then I discovered that my iPhone battery was flat. To top it off, it was snowing and icy so I couldn’t go for a walk, bike or run. The garage door opener needs electricity so I couldn’t go anywhere in the car. I went into the kitchen to make coffee and then I remembered that this also needed power, so I sat and talked with my wife for a few hours. She seems like a nice person. Actually, if the truth be told, I connect with more people now because of electronic devices than I did before. I admit most of them are superficial but some of them have turned into cherished friendships. I think the question the author of the joke is asking is: What do I value? What am I doing all day long? Was that important? We hear a lot about stress today and/or burn out. Some people will spend their whole lives in what are considered stressful jobs and never tire, when at the same time, another person gets depressed and shuts down. I think I’ve told the story a million times about an especially tragic night in the emergency room when the medical staff was pushed to the limit. A few weeks later at a Critical Incident Debriefing the EMTs and police who were at the scene of the tragedy were still in almost a post-traumatic stress emotional state. After they left, and only the medical staff was left, an ER nurse sheepishly said, “You know I kind of had a good time.” We agreed. When you are under stress doing what you love and doing it well, it’s not destructive, it’s completion. You may be tired as “you know what” but you have the satisfaction of having used all your skills and done your best. It doesn’t get much better than that. All the injured who could be saved were saved, the best medical care was given them and as swiftly as possible they were connected with their loved ones. When we are exhausted and disgruntled, have lost interest or burned out it usually means our actions have become so separated from our values that they have lost meaning – danger Will Robinson. That is when, like the man in the joke, we have to start speaking to those old relationships which formed us in the first place. Jesus did this when he said, “Come follow me.” And Samuel heard God calling in the night. Presider: Fr. James Cassidy On this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, we welcome singer/actors T Mychael Rambo and Thomasina Petrus, who join the SJA Choir to challenge us with the words of Dr. King and 400 Catholic theologians. They join Gwen Matthews, Tonia Hughes, Yolande Bruce, Cameron Wright, Brittany Delaney and host of others for the annual MLK concert, Marching to a Better World, all hosted by our own Dan Chouinard tonight at 7 pm in the Gym. Doors open at 6:15. Bring the whole family. Tickets are on sale this morning in the Gym vestibule. “We have found the Messiah!” Fr. Jim DeBruycker speaks about the gospel. All are welcome to our family-friendly liturgies in the Church!
