President’s Message Thanks to all of you who braved the cold weather and were able to at-

tend our February board meeting. A very good Show and Tell was provided by

Cookville Crazy Quilters. I should have known just how good it would be after

attending their biannual quilt shows in Cookville. If you have never visited their

show, you should.

It was agreed that the TVQA Brochure would be updated and made

available to guilds for quilt shows and for general information to anyone inter-

ested in learning about TVQA. Sena Frank has worked on this and plans to have

a draft available for the May board meeting.

Some of the board members are also working on updates to the TVQA

By-Laws and Standing Rules and Regulations. We, of course, cannot make ran-

dom changes to these, but are addressing items that have already been voted on

and approved at a board meeting. We want to have a draft form of this ready for

the May meeting, also. We will ask guilds to approve the changes so a final

version can be printed.

There are plans for another Judging Class in 2015. The details of this

have not been completed as yet, but hopefully this will be available by summer

of next year.

We will also be asking for support for our State Fair chairman. There is

a need for volunteers to hang quilts and to sit with the quilts during the show.

Will all the Guild Presidents please check page 2 of this newsletter and

verify their names, home address, phone, and e-mail address. We have not been

able to contact several guilds.

BOARD MINUTES

TENNESSEE VALLEY QUILTERS ASSOCIATION

*******************************************************************************************

February 14, 2014

The meeting was held at the LaVergne First United Methodist Church, Waldron Road, LaVergne, TN.

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 AM by President Arieanna Glennon. Arieanna asked for a roll call.

The minutes were submitted for approval. After discussion, the minutes were approved with changes requested by

Kay Pappenfuss.

Treasurer Jean Odom noted that this is the time of year when we receive dues and the account balance changes

often. The balance in the newsletter was around $8,600. Jean said that after all the dues come in our balance will be

between $10,000 and $12,000 but today after the checks she wrote it is $11,119.00. Jean asked to see someone from

Country Quilters regarding their $150 check for attendance that has not been cashed.

In the past, membership checks have gone to the Membership Chair and then are mailed to Jean. That’s approxi-

mately $15,000 in checks going through the Postal System twice. Jean suggested that the original checks be mailed

to her and a copy of the checks along with the membership information be mailed to Brenda. Arieanna quoted the

By-Laws wherein it states that the checks and membership information should go to the Membership Chairman and

the checks then be transferred to the Treasurer. It is not that this cannot be changed, but it would require an

amendment to the By-Laws.

Jean made a motion that we change the Standing Rules so that checks go to the Treasurer along with a copy of the

accounting/membership information that goes to the Membership Chair. Motion carried and the method of

submitting membership checks will change.

Officer/Committee Reports:

Vice President Sena Frank said we have three new books:

“Scraps Plus One” by Joan Ford

“Quilting Happiness” by Christina Lane and Diane Gilliland

“Quilting Modern” by Jacquie Gering and Katie Pedersen

These books will be available to check out after the meeting. If you have books out, please bring them back. Also,

when you go to your guild, ask that books be returned. “Quilting Happiness” is our book to remember our members

who passed away in 2013.

Membership Chairperson Brenda Willis said she has received about one-third of the renewals for 2014. She would

like to get this completed and the directory to the printer, so please get any

additional membership information to her as soon as possible. Membership cards were available for several guilds.

Newsletter Editor Ginger Fondren said thanks to everyone who sent in articles with the name of the guild in the

subject of the email. It was a tremendous help.

Arieanna asked that the officer information for guilds be updated and sent to Ginger for the newsletter.

5

State Fair chairperson Judy Beckwith was not available. Her representative asked that the judge information

be submitted by late April. The date for the 2014 fair will be in the next newsletter. Our goal for this year is to

have 150 quilts submitted. We are still in need of more hangers. Please continue to bring those in.

Program Services Chairperson, Jo Reid, said as soon as the membership info is in, Jo will call each of the

teachers to be sure that the classes they have listed are the ones they are available to teach and will remove any

teachers who have not paid their dues. Arieanna asked Jo to look at the Judges list and to remove any who are

no longer members. Jo agreed.

TVQA Website Chairperson, Kay Papenfuss, said several pages have been updated and she is working on

membership.

Home of the Brave (HOTB) chair for Alabama, Jo Reid, reported Alabama is good shape and there were no

losses since the last meeting.

Sena Frank, HOTB for Tennessee, reported there was one loss and the quilt has already been sent to the fam-

ily. Sena added that the booklist for the library is up-to-date and on the website.

Fall Retreat chairperson, Jo Reid, reported that registration forms (hopefully) will be in the next newsletter.

Winter Retreat chairperson, Barbara Seals, reported 65 people attended the Winter Retreat.

Everyone had a wonderful time and the food was fantastic. The new director is very accommodating. Look for

the form to be available in the Fall newsletter. The heat and AC have been improved.

Old Business:

Assembly Day 2014 – Ginger reported eight vendors are signed up. Arieanna said that if the

Assembly Day speakers would agree to stay over and teach classes open to all TVQA members, that TVQA

might agree to assist with expenses. Ginger said that Iris Guild had considered and rejected this idea due to the

high cost to those taking the classes. Ginger said they have space for 12 vendors and will get an application to

anyone who is interested. They are also offering space to long-arm quilters to display what they can do. Kay

suggested that the vendor application be added to the website. Deadline for registration is June 1st.

Assembly Day 2015 – Judy Hamsen is coming. She was a designer for Moda fabrics and has been on Fons &

Porter’s TV show. The date is July 18, 2015.

Ginger was appointed to chair a committee to discuss TVQA contributing to expenses for the Assembly Day

speaker to conduct classes.

New Business

Spring Seminar 2015 – The new director at St. Mary’s said they would be open to have the Spring Seminar

there. They would want to work with us on the rooms and the food. Please take this info back to your guild

and discuss. We will talk about it more at the next meeting.

Arieanna said a recommendation was made that TVQA pay mileage for the judges who are TVQA members

and working on a TVQA sponsored event.

Kay reported that she and Bernice are working on a class for judges. However, everyone who is certified to

teach the class is booked through 2014 and into 2015. There is a judges class taught at the NQA Columbus

show and it is going on the road. They will finalize the curriculum in May. Kay asked that they teach the class

6

for TVQA and suggested it be added to Spring Seminar 2015. Arieanna said it could be held before or after Spring

Seminar but with only three classrooms at either the Doubletree or St. Mary’s, it could not be at the same time. When

the Spring Seminar location is decided, we can make arrangements for the Judging Class.

Chattanooga AQS Show – Gayle reported the cost for a booth would be $1,378. She did not have an opportunity to

call AQS to see if they would “comp” a booth but will do that and report back. She encouraged everyone to support the

show. Arieanna suggested a brochure to tell more about TVQA and asked if anyone has a copy of the blue brochure we

used to have available.

White Glove Event – Arieanna asked if anyone wants to take on that event. It would mean finding a venue, receiving

quilts for the event, being responsible, etc. Jean said it used to be held on the year between Spring Seminars. Jean said

she would work on the committee but could not chair the show.

Bus Trips – is anyone interested in chairing this project? There was no response.

Guilds with handouts were recognized. .

Ginger thanked everyone who brought quilts to her for Quilts of Valor. As of this week, over 97,000 quilts have been

presented to combat or combat-related veterans. She will send out some additional information to the guild presidents.

The quilts need a pillowcase with them and a journal. Ginger asked if each guild could give one quilt per quarter. They

are talking about increasing the minimum size.

Show and Tell was presented by Cookville Crazy Quilters.

Door prizes were won by Pat Curtis, Pam Thompson, Evelyn Smith and Mary Sue Young. Congratulations, ladies!!

The next meeting will be on Friday, May 9, 2014. Show & Tell at the May meeting will be presented by Lincoln

County Piecemakers.

Respectfully submitted,

Gayle Grier

How does one spirited, creative woman with a background

in theater go from costume designer to quilting celebrity?

With the love and support of her amazing family, Jenny

Doan, of the Missouri Star Quilt Company, started posting

instructional quilting videos on YouTube in 2008, and since

has become one of the most widely watched sensations in

the quilting world with over 17 million views. Her inspira-

tional story coupled with her expertise in making quilting

easy caught the attention of Baby Lock, and now Jenny will

feature Baby Lock machines in her videos and store.

games and dinner. Donations were made to "FUEL

FOR KIDS", a program that feeds kids on days

they're not in school. These meals are the only food

some of these kids get on the weekends.

During our Sit & Sew times we have had many

demos by different members, and also worked on sev-

eral projects: a thread catcher, a quick-sew table

runner, a scrappy pincushion, and shared some great

tips.

The guild's new officers for 2014-2015: President

Linda Potts, Secretary Ruth Bledsoe, and Hospitality

Chairman Sue Volkmann. A big round of applause

went to the outgoing officers for a job well done.

We have a 3-generation family of quilters in our

guild: Terri Jansen (outgoing Secretary), her daughter

and grand-daughter. Also, we recently welcomed 4

new members , two of whom are a mother/daughter

"team". It's good to see the quilting tradition continu-

ing in families.

With the March meeting, we finalized several pro-

jects: A block of the month applique quilt, "Warm

Wishes" and a pieced block of the month " Every-

thing's Coming Up Roses". When the block of the

month quilts were displayed, it was very interesting to

see so many different looks from the same pattern.

The "Scavenger Hunt" project was finalized, with

prizes going to Nancy Swanson for the quilt with

the most items used and to Karen Hayes for Viewer's

Choice.

Our "UFO Challenge " was another project finalized.

A number of UFO's were "rescued" from our "UFO

prison" and completed . Some had been in there for

years! Prizes went to Linda Potts and Nancy Cole-

man. It was a good feeling for each of us to have

finished at least three UFO's.

GUILD NEWS

We began a " Quilting Strip Poker" game --- (No,

we keep our clothes on!) Each month, members

who bring in a 2-1/2" WOF strip of 100% cotton

gets to draw a card. A record is kept of their name

and the card drawn. At the end of 9 months, whoever

has the best "hand" wins all the strips of fabric! It's

sure to get exciting as the last month draws near.

A Mystery quilt was begun in February with the

first clue given. This project will finish up by the

October meeting.

Our charity quilt project for the year is a Quilt of

Valor (QOV). This also started in February, with

plans to complete by November.

A Quilt book and CD were donated to the local

library in honor of Sandy Foley, a long-time guild

member who passed away in 2013.

A silent auction is planned for our April meeting,

with members donating quilting items to auction off

to benefit the guild. Lots of good bargains are sure

to be found!

The "Rivers & Spires - Quilts of the Cumberland

2014" event is scheduled for April 24th, 25th and

26th. Guild members are encouraged to attend and

also to enter their quilts for display. More informa-

tion can be obtained at:

[email protected].

Looking forward to making many projects and

learning new techniques, and hoping to bring in more

new members, thus making new quilting friends.

Happy quilting trails to all.

COOKEVILLE CRAZY QUILTERS

Cookeville Public Library, Cookeville TN

The New Year began with the new officers for

Cookeville Crazy Quilters 2014 as follows; Presi-

dent – Judy Taylor, Vice President – Linda

Wolanin, Treasurer – Rebecca (Becky) Carlson and

Secretary – Jeanie Austin.

We started the New Year with a bang into our guild

projects for the year as well as planning for the sec-

ond CCQ Quilt Show in November 2014. We have

decided to do monthly 5x5 fabric exchanges, periodic

2½ inch strip exchanges and quarterly half square

triangle exchanges. We started a new block of the

month due to the request of the members. We added

a time for those who want to get together and work

on projects at 3:30 pm prior to our first meeting of

the month which is our business meeting. Members

can work on a project of their own or we are

offering a snowman block of the month or an Edyta

Sitar quilt block that can be done during this time.

Our big project this quarter was a Saturday class on

the Eldon Square taught by Janet Gagneur from

Lebanon. Everyone who attended worked on a

square. The instructor brought some finished quilts

which were so beautiful.

Quilt shows are gearing up and we are planning trips

to those shows. Ann Drothler is teaching a class

again this year in the Pigeon Forge Quilt Show in

Pigeon Forge. We are proud of Ann, our certified

Quilt in a Day instructor. The Sparta TN Guild will

also be hosting their annual Quilt Show May 2 and

3rd at the White County Faigrounds in Sparta, TN.

And Paducah AQS Quilt Show is just around the

corner and many plan to travel to Paducah for fun,

fabric, rulers, and classes. We all NEED more fabric

and rulers. Maybe we’ll see you there.

FRIENDSHIP QUILTERS

Smyrna Middle School Library

304 Walnut Street Smyrna, TN

2nd Saturday 10:00 a.m.

We are all ready to welcome spring with bright fabrics

and summer projects on the mind. Lately we have

been focusing on completing blocks and quilts for the

Quilts of Valor program. In January members were

able to sew block kits made up by Diane Lowe for the

Quilts of Valor. Diane and Toni Bass then assembled

the blocks guild members made into the quilt top(s).

February brought thoughts of love and new tech-

niques. Diane Lowe taught a class on how to make a

Bobbin Blossom Brooch, many lovely projects were

shared at show n’ tell. In March we had a sit n’ sew to

continue working on the blocks for the Quilts of

Valor. Also in the last months we started a pincushion

exchange. It’s a fun way to create something unique

and share with other guild members. Each month we

have a new theme; February’s was all thing love and

March’s was anything green. We are all looking

forward to warmer weather and shopping for new

fabrics at Paducah.

Microwave bowls started 2014 in a "warm" way. Our

president, Arlene Kersten, taught this class. February

and March have been spent on charity projects. We

are making over 100 bone pillows from many designs

of donated fabric. After getting plenty of practice,

members may even make some for gifts and

for themselves. In March work began on Quilts of

Valor.

We welcome several new members and are enjoying

their work added to regular "Show and Tell".

2014 is here and we hope to be ready for all it has in

store for us. Starting in January each year we work on

charity quilts; Habitat for Humanity and this year we

worked on Quilts of Valor. It is good to do some-

thing for someone else to begin the new year.

We worked on a fun and done project in February.

This was led by our own Donna Costilow. We always

enjoy working together and those not doing the project

come to visit and share.

March was the annual quilt show held at the Church

of Christ of the Latter Day Saints. There was a good

turnout for the event and many beautiful items were

displayed by our local guilds. We also meet later this

month for our workday for Ronald McDonald quilts to

be donated to Ronald McDonald House in Nashville.

We also take pull tabs and snacks for the families

staying there.

Quilting is such a good way to meet others of like

interest and we always learn new and old things to

share.

IRIS QUILTERS GUILD

Genesco Bldg. Nashville, TN

3rd Monday 6:30 P.M.

Iris has been growing and doing lots of things. We

love the time we celebrate and gather at Christmas to

get us ready for the new year’s stuff. We were lucky

enough to have had some fabric donated and made

some money for the guild. Ginger and her committee

and many others are getting the 2014 Assembly Day

(sure sounds like it is going to be a nice one) together.

Every year seems to get better and better. We have

planned sew days, classes, time set aside for socializ-

ing and bonding. I think I’ve even heard of a retreat

in the works. Grown women having a slumber party.

Life is wonderful!! We gather at Genesco’s on

the 3rd Monday of each month (except Dec) at

6:30 if you would like to come and visit.

Thanks!

LAKESHORE QUILTERS

First United Methodist Church

Hendersonville, TN

2nd Mon. 9AM Social - 10AM Business Mtg.

The new Year started out with a very successful

fabric sale. The fabric came from a generous donation

and was greatly appreciated. We also had two very

special guests. WWII Veteran Earl Lanning and

Korean War Veteran Billy DeVasher told us a little

bit about their interesting lives. As a small thank you

Melinda Kunkel presented each of them with a Quilt.

At the February meeting members were asked to sign

“interest sheets” for projects to be scheduled later.

There was great interest for some items, for instance

a bus trip to Paducah, 2 different Sweat shirt classes,

a vertically challenged class, a mondo and a big bag

class and also a class on machine maintenance.

In March, our regular meeting was held on the 10th,

and on the 18th and 19th we had our Spring retreat.

There was good food, lots of laughter and tons of

beautiful projects being worked on.

MANCHESTER QUILTING LADIES

Main Street Church of Christ

3rd Tuesday l:00 p.m.

The Manchester Quilting Ladies spent their January

meeting planning all kinds of fun places to go and

projects to do!

In February Lucy Deal taught a two-fabric quilt pat-

tern project called Garden Maze. If you haven’t made

one of these you should give it a try!

In March Katherine Ewell taught a paper pieced

flower placemat. She calls it a “jonquil”…I call it a

cup and saucer and some call it a buttercup…we all

call it pretty!

We are already looking forward to our annual summer

picnic, Christmas in July (two days of thinking of

snow and cold days while working on Christmas

gifts!!), and we can’t wait for the field trips – maybe

we’ll see some of you ladies while we’re out and

about!

Keep stitching and stop ripping!

MATERIAL GIRLS

Winchester Church of Christ

2nd Tuesday, 6:30 pm

We are off to an exciting new year with Pat Morris at

the helm. Several of our members attended the St.

Mary's Retreat in January and the Red Rooster

Retreat in March.

Donna Rumph is heading our work on the Cancer

Quilt to benefit the Multi County Cancer Organiza-

tion. The quilt will feature flowers and will be com-

19

pleted at the sit and sew on March 29.

In January our new program director, Barbara Ten-

penny, handed out questionnaires with many possi-

bilities for guild programs for the year. In an effort

to get to know our guild members Laura Anne

Simmons and Barbara explained how they got into

quilting and showed some of their first quilts. In

February Susan Kelley, Rita Milner, and Anne Sitz,

founding members of the guild, told us their quilting

stories. In March, Cathy Stich, Joan Blocher, and

Andrea Hill gave us insight into how they began their

quilting adventures. Barbara Tenpenny also led us

through a strategy to complete four of our UFO's.

We listed our projects on two index cards one of

which was returned to Barbara. The second project

on the list should be completed by the April meeting.

Also, Barbara distributed the specifications for a

block swap in March, May, June, September, and

November meetings. Those that completed a block

in March placed their name in a box and Brenda

Butner was the lucky winner.

In Feburary, Jo Reid led us in the construction of

fabric bowls to use when microwaving something in

an individual serving size bowl. The fabric bowl

made using potholders unnecessary. In March, Pam

Hicks explained t-shirt quilt construction. She has

made many of these for school fundraisers which

have been quite successful. Additionally, she has

made these with onsies, caps, and even school letter

jackets.

Our show and tell segment at each meeting is always

inspiring and exciting. It provides an opportunity to

encourage new quilters.

The guild is planning a bargello workshop on June 14

with Charlie Rhea. Specifics will be worked out in

the following months.

1st Tues., 9:30 a.m.—2:00 p.m.

The Music City Quilters Guild has lots of fun things

planned for 2014. We were disappointed when we

had to cancel our January meeting due to weather.

Nevertheless, we got as much done as possible by

email and telephone. Our new vice president, Jean

Shaw, has begun a new UFO program for our group.

At the beginning of the year those who wanted to

participate wrote out a numbered list of 12 UFO

projects for the year. A number is drawn each month

and members work on the corresponding project

number. There is a lot of participation and lots of

finished quilting projects.

For our February meeting MCQG member Karen

Gibson presented an interesting program titled “Old is

New Again”. Karen purchases antique quilt blocks at

thrift stores, antique stores, etc. and turns them into

lovely quilts. She has an extensive collection of quilts

that she has made with old blocks. Karen brought

many of her refurbished quilts for us to enjoy.

For our February Sit and Stitch we had 2 Full Day

Classes taught by Bonnie and Ginger of Strips and

Strings --Blazing Star (pattern) and Diamonds are

Forever from their book, Strip Quilt Revival. Class

projects were shown at our March guild meeting.

They did an outstanding job.

Many of our guild members are gearing up for

quilting fun, food, and friendship at our annual quilt

retreat at the Nashville YMCA camp March 24-27,

2014.

Winter chased us indoors for a series of classes on

the use of EQ7 in designing quilts. I love this

software and use it primarily to relieve myself of

math anxiety. (My 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Dixon,

would be surprised to hear that I even know what a

fraction is). We designed several blocks and

explored color combinations, values and tones. We

chose spring colors, naturally, and that helped to

relieve the monotony of all those gray days. We are

very excited to be off to Pigeon Forge for the quilt

show. And the mountains are beautiful even when

stripped of greenery!

Our guild has been busy with preparations and planning

for our annual Quilt Show, which is the first weekend

in May (to coincide with the local Old Timer’s Day

festival). This year’s theme is “Topsy Turvy.” Guild

members have each made and swapped blocks for the

guild quilts, which will be displayed and then later donated

to charity.

There’s been a lot of excitement as the Guild was recently

approached by another organization with a tempting offer

to move the show downtown, closer to the Old Timer’s

Day festivities. Stay tuned to our Facebook page

(SewDelightful QuiltGuild) for the announcement of the

location!

Many of the guild members will be attending the Spring

Quilt Retreat at Camp Garner’s Creek in March, and we’re

so excited to be joining members from other guilds for a

weekend of fun, fellowship, games and of course, lots of

quilting!

The Sew Delightful Guild is especially looking forward to

having quilting celebrity Jenny Doan visit us at Granny

B’s Quilt Shop on Friday, July 19 (the evening before

TVQA Assembly Day). More details to follow; see our

Facebook for details closer to the event.
