Update on In-Person Worship at FBC Last week the Church Council met via Zoom to discuss the possibility of setting a target date for resuming in-person worship at the church. We are aiming for Sunday, July 12, unless there is a continued surge in the coronavirus. Our caution for delay is the health and safety of our entire congregation. At this point, the coronavirus has not subsided, unfortunately. Despite the reopening of businesses and restaurants, the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in NC reached a single-day high on Tuesday, June 9th, at 774. On Monday, the seven-day average of new cases reached 1,032- the first time that average has exceed- ed 1,000. We will continue to monitor the situation. We are grateful that we can stay connected with God and with one another during this pandemic through our weekly virtual worship services on Vimeo. When we do return for worship in-person, we will require masks and social distancing without congregational singing. Church will temporarily look and feel a bit different. Stay tuned. On Loving Our Neighbor As protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death become more peaceful nationwide, I have been encouraged by the constructive conversations and positive steps taken to address social injustices. I mentioned a few bipartisan legislative steps that could be taken in response to the problem of the use of excessive force in last week’s Senior Pastor’s Pen. It’s been good to hear progress towards some of these steps in Congress already. Jesus taught: Love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39). The parable of the Good Samaritan illustrates neighborly love when a Samaritan man cares for an injured stranger without regard for his skin color, nationality, or social class (Luke 10:25-37). The Samari- tan is the only one who sees the injured man in all his humanity. We should follow his example. Our love for one another should be color blind. Paul tells us in Galatians 3:28: There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, nor is there male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you are a white person, I encourage you to do some listening this week. Speak with a co-worker, friend, or neighbor who happens to be black and ask them about their thoughts and feelings regarding the current unrest about racism and injustice. Start a conversation and then just listen. It may surprise you what they share. In two conversations with black friends this past week, I asked them about what they thought about all that has been taking place in terms of George Floyd’s death and the nationwide protests. I also asked about their views on racism. Surprisingly, the greatest concern for both right now was protecting themselves against a surge of coronavirus amongst their friends and family who may be exposed to it through the demonstrations. Right now their own health and the health of loved ones take precedence. One friend about my age said to me: “White and black people in our country have been fighting for over 150 years and will continue to do so. That’s nothing new. I just want to keep safe from the coronavirus and want my loved ones to survive this pandemic.” Let’s continue to pray for our nation, our leaders, and police. Let’s pray specifically for our black brothers and sisters. Let’s employ listening ears and caring hearts as we progress towards liberty and justice for all. Blessings, Pray for Jackie Smith at Wake Med Hospital in Raleigh, Room #6B06. She had surgery to repair a broken left arm from a fall at her home over the weekend. Continue to pray for Addie Radford as she has another week of rehab at UNC Rex Rehab, also continue to pray for Percy Lee as he is still in Wake Rehab Hospital in Raleigh. Christian Sympathy is expressed to the Baker/Byrd Families upon the death of Margo Baker Samuel. She was killed in a car accident in Australia on Friday, June 5th. Pray for Margo’s husband Sarosh, who is recovering from the accident. On Loving Our Neighbor

As protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death become more peaceful nationwide, I have been encouraged by the constructive conversations and positive steps taken to address social injustices.

WEDNESDAY TAILGATE DINNERS

On Wednesday Nights during the month of June if you drive by the church between 5-6:30 pm you might just find a group of the finest youth around Clayton tailgating in the parking lot! In order to keep fellowship going during this pandemic, our youth are invited to pick up their own dinner and bring it to the parking lot to catch up by social distancing. Each week we will rotate between our high schoolers and middle schoolers in order to keep numbers to a minimum. Last week we kicked off this event with our high schoolers, it was so nice to see familiar faces in person! We even met a new friend who attends the local high school and happened to be passing through with his basketball. He spent time showing us a few tricks and introducing himself.

If you see us out there and you are passing by, be sure to give us a honk and a wave! We miss you all and hope to see you soon.

Hear ye, hear ye! I hereby declare that VBS will now stand for Virtual Bible School. It brings great sad-ness to know that we cannot all gather together in person for this special event, but that doesn’t mean we can’t virtu-ally bring the spirit as we learn, grow and have fun at home. As Knights of North Castle, we will be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Join in the vir-tual fun as we venture be-yond space on a quest for the King’s Armor. Each night, we will armor up with the Belt of Truth, Breastplate of Justice, Shoes of Peace, Shield of Faith and Helmet of Salvation. VBS will still be the week of July 12-16 with a Facebook live each night at 6:00 to kick off the night’s theme, lesson and activities. Participants will receive materials for craft, activities and a CD. Additionally, we have some surpris-es and creative things planned to engage families throughout the week. Registration is open and will go through June 19. Please register each child in your household who will participate. If you have friends or neighbors you feel comfortable participating with on a small scale, join together to increase the fun of VBS at home with others. Everybody wake up, it’s KNIGHT time!
