president’s reportThank you!I’d like to thank all the volunteers and instructors who have taken classes, written cards, organised dogs sporting sheds, emptied the doggie doo bins, pulled a few weeds from the grounds, mown the surrounding grass etc etc. This club just could not operate without you.

We are always on the lookout for new people to volunteer, or who have a particular skill they are willing to share to improve the amenities of our fabulous dog club. Just pop into the office for a chat before or after class times.

I would also like to thank the Committee for all the work they do. We have a few new faces on the Committee and all the dog sports are represented. We will be looking at the BDOC Strategic and Business Plans early in 2016. In January, a new instructor’s course is scheduled to be held.

Canberra MetroFlemington Road is being expanded on the dog club side to make room for the light rail. There will be road works which are likely to have intermittent impact on our access to the club grounds. Canberra Metro assures me that access to the club grounds will always be maintained. If you encounter any access issues, please let me know at [email protected]

Looking after your best friend over the holiday period.Ticks

If you are off to the coast, I ask you to be very cautious about ticks. Tick protection is very important, but you should still be vigilant about searching your dog for ticks. Under their gums, in their ears, between their toes and pads. Up their nose! Everywhere. Medical treatment for tick paralysis is very expensive and no-one wants to see their best mate become very ill from a risk which can be minimised. I’d like to see all the BDOC dogs to return fit and healthy in 2017!

Car travel

Plenty of water, plenty of stops, for both you and your canine buddy. Never leave your dog in the car in Summer.

Christmas dinner

Some of us eat too much over Christmas. A few doggie treats for our buddies is okay, but beware of the chocolates (keep them in the fridge), dogs can’t stop at one! (See fit and healthy above!)

Finally, take care over the holiday period. Drive carefully. I would like to see everyone back in 2017, for another great year at BDOC.

Cheers

Lyn Clyde and Adora

New instructors join the teamThe BDOC team of agility instructors has grown with the completion of training of five new agility instructors.

Their training program began in December last year when BDOC hosted a weekend instructors’ workshop, run by NSW trainer and agility judge Le Hammer from Canine Fun Sports.

Le spent the weekend running participants from BDOC, CDC and TDTC through units focusing on both theory and practice, covering the basics of dog training and class instruction.

Over the months since the workshop, BDOC trainees participated in in-house workshops at BDOC that focused on familiarisation with the details of the BDOC Agility Instructors Handbook, the ANKC agility rules and several practical sessions led by BDOC agility instructors Barbara Brown and Pam McDougall.

During that time, the trainees also assisted with all agility classes conducted at the club to gain direct teaching experience with support from the club’s experienced instructors. All trainees also continued to compete in trials with their own dogs throughout the year, several earning qualifications.

The newly-minted instructors will continue to assist with agility classes run by experienced

instructors into the new year prior to taking classes on their own.

The new BDOC agility instructors are Nicola Peaker, Lisa Borthwick, Fiona Fraser, Dorothy Xu and Laurajane Smith. We appreciate their commitment to the sport of agility at BDOC.

Agility trialling at Sale in VictoriaFiona Fraser (and Mirri) and Barbara Brown (and Dazzle and Oliver) entered the recent agility and jumping trial at Sale on Sunday 9th October.

Although it is a long drive from Canberra, it is a very pleasant drive with little traffic and beautiful scenery. Also, unlike when you head north to the NSW trials, there are many lovely places to stop and run your dogs and have a picnic.

Fiona stayed in her caravan at the Sale Showground which has very reasonable rates and an oval to run the dogs. Barbara stayed at the Stratford Tourist Park in a very nice dog friendly cabin overlooking the river.

Stratford (on the Avon River) is about 15 minutes from the centre of Sale and is a lovely small town with a terrific bakery! The Stratford Park overlooks the river and has beautiful grassy caravan sites plus a range of dog friendly cabins. You can also walk your dogs

along the river. This is a great spot to stop if you are travelling to Melbourne via the coast.

The agility trial was held in the Sale velodrome and had three rings operating which meant many agility and jumping runs. Fiona had entered ten Excellent and Open runs and Barbara had entered nine Excellent, Open and Masters runs so our day was very long and busy. We seemed to be either walking or running the courses all day. We did have time for a few off- lead walks along the beautiful walk ways which surround the velodrome and admired the gorgeous flowering gums and bottle brushes. The weather was great, we had no rain or the severe wind that Melbourne received and the local club fueled us with great catering throughout the day.

All three dogs managed to qualify in several runs and all came first in an event, each winning a large bag of Black Hawk dog food which made us very happy handlers.

Sale story written by Barbara Brown

Dogs ACT agility titlesThe Dogs ACT 2016 Agility titles were held on the weekend of 24/25 September at the ACTCDC grounds.

The weather was glorious and the trial attracted entries from all ACT clubs as well as many teams from the various Sydney clubs.

The judges on Saturday were Martin Bush from New Zealand and Helen Mosslar from the ACT.

Agility ends the year on a highTo end the year, the agility group held a Christmas party and fun team trial for all levels of agility ability.

Six groups of three dog/handler teams competed - each gruop having the task of coming up with a name for the night. Our six groups were: Pawsome; Fresh Starters; Hairy Shedders; Something Christmas; the 301s and the Kelpies.

According to judge, steward and timekeeper John Brown, team Something Christmas scored the best average run time, closely followed by the 301s and the Kelpies.

Best individual times belonged to Maelyn Draper and Tango; Margo Hellyer and Rory;

Despite the results listed above, the spirit of the event wasn’t about clean runs and winning times, but having fun with our dogs and our agility friends and families. Many thanks to everyone who turned up, set up the equipment and had a run, to Barbara Brown for setting

Thanks also to everyone who brought food to share after the trial - all round it was a great way to end the year and set ourselves up for success when we return fresh and keen for the first session next year!

trial stewardingWHAT DO OBEDIENCE STEWARDS DO AT A TRIAL? By Cheryl Neal

Volunteering to be a Steward is a great way to support your Club and to learn a lot about the dog sport you may be be considering competing in. And, it’s great fun! It doesn’t matter if you have volunteered to be an Obedience or a Rally Obedience Steward you are an essential part of the team that pulls trials together. A Steward is an essential person. A good Steward is a treasure, a great Steward is even better!

At BDOC we usually have two Stewards per ring, although at times one steward can manage. The Steward’s job is to help ensure the ring runs smoothly in all aspects.Stewards assist the Judge to make this happen by being in the right place at the right time, ready to carry out all instructions. They assist the Handler by being friendly, understanding, unobtrusive and considerate, and they assist the Dog by being in the background and making sure there is a smooth flow from one exercise to the next. A well-run ring is a pleasure to judge and to compete in, even if, as is sometimes inevitable, things do go pear-shaped for the handler and the dog.

No matter what level you are stewarding at, some things never change:

1. It is a good idea to be familiar with the current Obedience (or Rally Obedience) Rules, especially the level you are assisting in.

2. Arrive on time, usually about 45-60 mins before judging time

3. Find out which Judge you are stewarding for and ask to be introduced to the Judge if you don’t know him/her.

4. Advise the Judge you are there and offer to assist in setting their ring up.

5. At some stage, the Judge will give clear instructions as to how they want things done, it may be confusing if you are inexperienced, so make sure you ask questions if you aren’t sure.

6. When a dog finishes its individual exercises, return the lead to the handler as soon as possible, and

7. Wear suitable clothing, appropriate for the weather, comfortable footwear, sunscreen and be prepared for all conditions- you know Canberra weather!

If you are interested in being a Steward at an Obedience or Rally Obedience trial let Maelyn or I know and we will ensure you get a free lunch the first time you Steward!

2016 Obedience & Rally Obedience Report by Maelyn DraperIt has been another big year for obedience and rally obedience at BDOC! Our trialling teams have had a very busy year, representing the club in many local trials, and we have also had members compete in Sydney, regional NSW, Victoria, and Queensland.

On the training front, 2016 has seen our class numbers for obedience growing, and we have had two large intakes for rally obedience. Class attendance remains strong, and we look forward to continuing our training over the summer months. A very big thank you to the instructors and helpers who have given us a great year of training – Anne Lewis, Barbara Brown, Alison McCann, Maelyn Draper, and Cheryl Neal – and to Di Easter who always makes herself available for last minute trial preparation.

We have had a number of teams complete our rally obedience foundation heelwork course and go on to achieve success in their very first trials. BDOC recently hosted a double obedience trial in November, and we received a very good entry from club members and local triallers. Congratulations to the Novice level trialling teams from BDOC – Charlie and Otis, Anne and Delilah, Angela and Jazzmine, Alex and Lizzie, Rebekha and Harry, Fiona and Mirri, Dorothy and Chad, Pam and Crackle – on their excellent work in the ring! Our highest performing Novice level team on the day was Rebekha and her Sheltie Harry, who took out second place in both morning and afternoon trials with scores of 93 and 98 respectively. Congratulations also goes to Charlie and Otis, Fiona and Mirri, and Jenny and Kobe for finishing off their Rally Novice titles on the day, and to Anne and Delilah who have since finished off their title.

In the higher rings, Claire and Lottie achieved their first qualifying score in Rally Advanced, and Anne and Goose achieved two qualifying scores to finish off Goose’s Rally Advanced title. Karen and Jazz made a splash in their first time in Rally Excellent scoring a perfect 100 and a 96, and Angela and Pepper and Melinda and Obi also achieved passes in Rally Excellent. Anne and Alvin, Geoff and Hamish, and Niccola and Zimri also obtained qualifying scores in Rally Master.

BDOC also hosted double obedience trials in April and in August, and another double rally obedience trial in June. In addition, we also contributed significantly to the running of the ACT State Obedience and Rally Obedience titles held in May, the Canberra Royal Obedience and Rally Obedience trials held in May, and the Advance International Dog Show and Trial Extravaganza held in July. A very big thank you to all our organisers and stewards who volunteered their time to help out at these trials.

Congratulations to all the teams who received awards at the dog sports award presentation for their trialling achievements between November 2015 and October 2016. The Obedience Dog of the Year was awarded to Elaine Temby and her Cocker Spaniel Haylen (Ch Watervaal Winfrey Konexshun CDX RAE ET) for their work in the Utility Dog ring. The Rally Obedience Dog of the Year was awarded to Karen Hobson and her Border Collie Jazz (Lifesong All About Jazz CDX RA) for achieving three perfect scores in Rally Novice and Rally Advanced.

BDOC also awards perpetual trophies for teams who achieve the highest score in their respective levels. For obedience, these were won by Karen and Jem (CCD), Karen and Jazz (Open), and Elaine and Haylen (UD). For rally obedience, these were won by Karen and Jazz (Novice and Advanced), Renee and Laddie (Novice), Cheryl and Mya (Advanced Excellent and Master), and Maelyn and Tango (Advanced Excellent).

Our title award winners for obedience and rally obedience were Dorothy and Joey (RN), Geoff and Bronte (RA), Geoff and Hamish (CD, RAE), Geoff and Kirsty (RA), Maelyn and Tango (RAE), Maelyn and Chloe (CCD), Melinda and Obi (RA), Melinda and Yoda (RN), Angela and Pepper (RA), Karen and Jazz (RN, RA), Claire and Lottie (RN), Anne and Goose (CCD, RN), Sam and Benson (RN, RA), and Greta and Indy (RA). Congratulations to all!

Both obedience and rally obedience will be continuing to train over the summer months. Many of our handlers are club instructors so it’s a great opportunity to dedicate some time to our own dogs while there’s a break from canine companion classes. If you are interested in learning more about either sport, please email [email protected]. Rally obedience will hold its next intake for new dogs in February, so if you would like to be included, please email your name, your dog’s name and breed, and your canine companion level to register.
