VP Technical Report By John Fischer Jr.

A most interesting and informative presentation on Double Containment (DC) piping was the topic of the March meeting. Diana Mollicone, Applications Engineer from IPEX USA LLC -Industrial Piping Systems, explained how to use this material, and some of its unique qualities and installation requirements. It was pointed out during the presentation that there are two main principle guidelines that direct general system design. • First both the Primary Piping, (the pipe that’s conveying the fluid) and the secondary Pipe System, (the pipe that’s housing and enclosing the primary pipe) must be designed according to the governing rules and codes of single wall piping. • The second and equally important guideline is consideration of the sheer size of the double containment piping system as it takes up much more space than single wall piping, requiring consideration of proper clearances in the layout to ensure fast and simple joining of the components. Design of the secondary components, which in effect acts as a safety net, are designed to be used only in the event of a failure of the primary system. The secondary components must take into account any and all interactions between the two pipes and must be able to vent and drain the system if there is a failure of the primary system. Some of the other factors to be considered in the design were pointed out including thermal expansion and contraction; climatic conditions of the area of installation; expansion and contraction but at different magnitudes of the two pipes. Leak detection must be installed. This is only a small description of the material covered. Sorry you missed this one. Our April meeting will discuss PMI. What is PMI, a disease, fungus? Plumbing Manufacturers International is an organization that serves as a voice for the Plumbing industry. PMI's successful advocacy recently was demonstrated with the harmonization of lead standards across U.S., when the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act was signed into law in January 2011. In Plumbing Engineer Magazine, March 2015, ASPE’s official publication, you will find an article discussing PMI’s participation in an effort to forestall changes in California’s Proposition 65, The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, that could have had a negative impact in the Plumbing Industry nationwide. Our presenter will be Barbara C. Higgens who has been CEO/Executive Director since she joined the Plumbing Manufacturers International (PMI) in April 1998. PMI’s current focus includes water efficiency, ensuring safe, clean drinking water (for example through the PMI-sponsored and newly introduced national law to reduce lead in plumbing products), conformity assessment, fair trade initiatives, and outreach to policy makers and the next generation of workers. I am sure you will find this presentation interesting and informative. Hope to see you Tuesday, April 7 at our next meeting. Don’t forget the availability of your Continuing Education Certificates which will be obtainable at the close of our meeting.

VPLegislativeReport,

Nicholas Hipp New Sustainable Management Standard Published February 25, 2015 – The American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) and the Water Quality Association (WQA) are pleased to announce that the standard now known as WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-801: Sustainable Management has been officially approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard. WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-801 can be used to evaluate a company’s sustainability-related governance and management practices at the corporate and production facility level. It focuses on the following core attributes:

Corporate social responsibility and healthy, safe working conditions Organizational sustainability (e.g., policies, communications, transparency/reporting,

environmental monitoring, and improvement) Sustainable supply chains

WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-801 is a prerequisite for certification to two WQA sustainability-related product standards, WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-802: Sustainable Activated Carbon for Drinking Water Treatment and WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-803: Sustainable Drinking Water Treatment Systems, both of which received ANSI approval in 2014. Companies and facilities cannot be certified to S-801, but companies whose facilities conform to the requirements of S-801 are eligible to have their products evaluated for certification to S-802 and S-803. A digital download of WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-801 can be purchased from ASPE’s website at www.aspe.org

ASHRAE/IES Publish Updated Standard on Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings A newly revised standard from ASHRAE and IES seeks to provide greater guidance and a more comprehensive approach to retrofit of existing buildings for increased energy efficiency. Published this week, ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 100-2015, Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings, provides comprehensive and detailed descriptions of the processes and procedures for the retrofit of existing residential and commercial buildings in order to achieve greater measured energy efficiency. Appendices are included for life-cycle cost analysis procedures as well as identification of potential energy conservation measures. The standard addresses both residential and commercial buildings. It addresses single and multiple activity buildings with variable occupancy periods and identifies the approach for 53 building types in 17 climate zones/subzones. It identifies requirements for buildings undergoing retrofits that do not fall under the scope of either ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2013, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, or ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.2-2007, Energy Standard for Low-Rise Residential Buildings. The cost of ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 100-2015, Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings, is $72 ($61, ASHRAE members). To order, contact ASHRAE Customer Contact Center at 1-800-527-4723 (United States and Canada) or 404-636-8400 (worldwide), fax 678-539-2129, or visit www.ashrae.org/bookstore.
