President’s Message July 2015 · 2015 icri carolinas chapter fall convention october 22-24, 2015...

I am very excited to write this President’s Message following our highly successful Spring Conference. We had a great attendance for the pre-conference social event at the Rooftop Party Zone of the BB&T Ballpark. Everyone had a great time socializing with good refreshments and a Charlotte Knight’s baseball game. Our conference the next day featured engaging speakers and a once- in-a-lifetime tour of the renovations to Bank of America Stadium, home of the Panthers. Prior to the social event and conference, a number of ICRI Carolinas volunteers successfully repaired several masonry walls at Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region (HPCCR). The efforts and donations of our members and sponsors to achieve this much-appreciated charitable contribution to the community are described later in this newsletter. I’d like to also extend further congratulations to the winners of our ICRI Carolinas Chapter Project of the Year (Stone Restoration of America, Carl Walker, Inc., Sika, and Guaranteed Supply) for their award-winning project, “Elevated roadway renovations project at Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA),” and to our 2015 scholarship recipient, Christopher O’Laughlin of Clemson University. Additionally, congratulations are in order for our entire chapter, as we were again recognized nationally as an ICRI Outstanding Chapter for 2014. Thank you to everyone for making this a chapter that shines at the national level! Moving forward, we invite you to plan to attend our 8th Annual WCA/ICRI Sporting Clay shoot in Richburg, SC (October 15th), as well as our Fall Convention in Wilmington, NC (October 22-24). The groundwork has been laid for these events, and details are provided herein. Our technical programs have explored some unique and challenging topics during the past few years, but for this Fall Convention, our theme is “Back to Basics: Concrete Repair.” A great speaker lineup paired with a great location (and great golf) will make this an event you won’t want to miss. Finally, it is with a heavy heart that our Board of Directors is preparing to lose our Executive Director Kelly Andrews (and of course Kit Andrews as well). Kelly has decided to retire as ICRI Carolinas Chapter Executive Director at the end of 2015. Replacing Kelly will be our chapter’s long-time creative services facilitator, Brad Aderhold. Many of you are familiar with Brad from his roles at ICRI and WCA, and know that his talents will serve our chapter well as we navigate the waters without Kelly. As I stated in my introductory remarks at the Spring Conference, “Kelly… Kit… Brad… without you guys, this would be a mess!” We appreciate all that you do to help our busy members benefit from this organization. Kelly and Kit, as you move towards your retirement, THANK YOU for all you’ve done! And Brad, we look forward to continuing to work with you as we move forward. As always, please feel free to contact me or our other board members if you have questions, suggestions, or other feedback. Looking forward to seeing you in the fall! 2015 SPRING CONFERENCE IN CHARLOTTEA HIT! A HOME RUN! NO, A GRANDSLAM! 2015 SPING CONFERENCE: TOUCHDOWN!

Not a mixed metaphor; it was all that and more. Many thanks to all who attended, contributed or presented at the 2015 ICRI Carolina’s Spring Conference at BB&T Ballpark and Panthers Stadium in Charlotte. From the Thursday night hospitality on the patio, to the Friday technical sessions in the baseball Luxury Suite to the afternoon construction tour of Panther Stadium, the attendees were wowed, entertained and informed. Both facilities were outstanding and the attendance of nealy 80 attendees suggested the theme ““MEETING THE CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES OF DESIGN OF TODAY’S CIVIL STRUCTURES” scored big. A special thanks to Kenseal Construction Products and BASF for co-hosting the “Take Me Out To the Ballgame” event and Nomaco for underwriting the Charlotte Knights hats.

Conference Attendees earn 5 PDH’s2015 CHAPTER SERVICE PROJECT COMPLETED: Bruce Stoerkel, Service Project Chairman

The 2015 ICRI Carolinas Chapter service project took place on Thursday, May 14 in Charlotte, North Carolina preceding the chapter’s annual Spring Conference. The beneficiary of the project was Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region (HPCCR). Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region is a non-profit organization whose mission is to relieve suffering and improve the quality and dignity of life through compassionate hospice care for those at the end of life, palliative care for those with advanced illness, and through community education. The focus of this year’s project was the repair of a brick faced masonry retaining wall on the property of the organization. A team of volunteers from the chapter led by board member, Bruce Stoerkel of Statesville Roofing & Building Restoration, Inc. spent the day providing the necessary repairs to the wall. The weather was perfect and John Card the Director of Maintenance for HPCCR was pleased with the outcome of the project. Materials and tools for the project were generously provided by Mcgee Brothers (brick, sand, mortar, ties), BASF (Concrete, CMU, grout) and Guaranteed Supply Company (safety equipment). BASF and Statesville Roofing & Building Restoration also provided lunch and refreshments for our volunteers.

Joining Bruce Stoerkel on the project was a group of volunteers from the Carolinas Chapter including:Al Schweickhardt – Applied Building SciencesBen Smith – NC State UniversityMatt Osborne – BASFZachary Duggan - BASFRobert McDowell – Pro-Tec WeatherproofingDoug & Lisa Saunders – Guaranteed Supply CompanyTara Cavalline – UNC CharlotteWendy Bruss - Amec Foster WheelerHayes Thompson - Strickland WaterproofingLeonard Houston – Statesville Roofing & Building Restoration Service Project Team Members recognized at Conference

The rapid modernization of our society seen over the past century has spawned a need for the implementation of various types of sup-porting infrastructure. Utilities require generation infrastructure such as dams and power plants to improve quality of life. The develop-ment of various transportation forms has necessitated the development of high-capacity bridges, roads, ports and runways. Increasingly complex structures are in demand as technological innovation fuels growth. Advancement in the areas of concrete design, material sci-ence, and construction techniques are necessary to keep pace with these growing needs of our society, and it is in the advancement and continued development of these fields that my interest lies.

Sufficient knowledge of material science, construction techniques, and concrete design is necessary have a true understanding of any one of these disciplines, and it is my goal to become well-versed in every aspect. Having an advanced understanding of the associated mate-rial science as well as of the various techniques utilized in concrete construction is vital to a concrete design that is efficient, sustainable, and effective. Furthermore, an ability to adapt to and promote growth and change in these fields is necessary for the advancement of concrete design. With an interest in the advancement of these fields and a desire to fully understand them, I have enrolled in a structural graduate program and plan to seek continuing education and professional advancement throughout my career as a structural engineer. It is my hope that, with the knowledge and experience gained throughout my career, I will be able to contribute to the advancement of the civil engineering profession and to make contributions that will ultimately benefit and further our society.
