    SHOW SEASONED

We all have received the final selections from our juror, Ted Nuttall. A couple of months ago, we had Martha Mans give us tips on how and what to enter. I hope many of you took the time and effort to do so.

Now comes the hard part. Some of us have been rejected. No one suffers rejection more than watercolor artists! Not even my still single 45 year-old son! Here are some of the ideas I came up with should I have gotten a rejection:

    1. Give it to the dog to chew up. We have a puppy, he thinks everything should be eaten and recycled!

    2. Tear it to shreds and make paper from it and the other stack of rejection letters so I have homemade paper to paint on.

    3. Write "No Longer at this Address" on the envelope and give it back to the mailman, but since I know him, he probably won't believe me. Maybe if I wear a disguise.

    4. Shred it and put it in the cat litter box.

    5. Fold it into a fan to use for hot flashes.

    6. Make a paper airplane....heck, a whole fleet of airplanes!

    7. Level that wobbly leg on my drawing table.

    8. Wallpaper the rest of the rejection letter wall in my studio.

    9. If I had grandkids, they could make spitballs.

And lastly, shed a tear, set it aside, pick up a brush and go back to work! Good thing it came by email, saves a whole forest!

PPWS Award in Gayle Higgins name to be donated to Bemis.

The Members Show in December at Imagination Celebration.

The board meeting was adjourned at 6:17 PM.

General Meeting: The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM by president, Carol Naylor.

Guests: Lori, Kathy and Trish were our guests at the May meeting.

Hosts and Chefs: Thanks to our hosts, Mary Sue Copeland and Carole Sebben, and to Sally Boeschen and Carolyn Ginter, our chefs.

Minutes: A motion was made and seconded to approve the April minutes as they appeared in the May newsletter.

Treasurer’s Report: Kathleen Murray provided the Treasurer’s Report as of 5/20/2015. (See Page 7)

    Committee Reports:

Marketing: Jack Malloch is our Administrator for Peak Radar, and he has updated the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society listing as spoken about at our April meeting. On the listing, you will see "Upcoming Events" featuring First Fridays at Boulder Street Gallery. There is also a limited "Photo Gallery." Here is

    the link: http://www.peakradar.com/…/…/6/Pikes_Peak_Watercolor_Society.

Membership: Our membership has reached 151. Membership renewal dues are requested by September 1, 2015, which may be paid anytime between now and September 1. New members joining now will not have to pay again until September 1, 2016.

Kang Lee Sheppard presented Mary Sue Copeland as our most recent signature member.

International Watermedia: Eighty-five pieces have been selected by our juror, Ted Nuttall, from 160 submitting artists. A list of accepted artists is now shown on our website, and Joan is working on a page that will display the accepted paintings. Thirty-five awards will be given at International Watermedia. Most are valued at over $100 in cash or merchandise. The workshops will be held at Library 21c in their MakerSpace area.

Members Show: Get those paint brushes out and begin painting for our Members Show scheduled for December 8, 2015, to January 8, 2016, at Imagination Celebration at the Citadel Mall. The opening reception will be on Thursday, December 10, 2015. Associates will be allowed two entries for $30 and signature members three entries for $30. That is not a typo, there is a benefit to being a signature member! There will be no juror and no prizes except for a People’s Choice Award ($100 cash and ribbon). A 30% commission will be charged. Bins of shrink-wrapped work will be allowed.

Nominating Committee: Linda Shelley, Nominating Chair, presented nominees and asked that anyone else interested in the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer please contact her. Currently, Carol Naylor has volunteered to serve another term as President, Kang Lee Sheppard and Myra Patin as Vice President, Eric Fetsch as Secretary, and Kathleen Murray to continue as Treasurer.

Library: Myra reminded us to check the website for new DVD’s!

Old Business: The “new member of two years or less” who won the free art class this month is Carol Farren.

New Business: Cottonwood director, Jon Khoury, posed the question to the membership, “Where does art come from?” to stimulate our thinking and as an introduction to the July show at Cottonwood. The show is coordinated with the Georgia O’Keeffe Show at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and minimalist style of Agnes Martin. Power Booth will be the Juror, and Jon encouraged all of us to research and consider entering this upcoming show.

Academy Art and Frame and the PPWS are working on a show to benefit the Gayle Higgins Foundation, which is tentatively set for June 12.

The Board is reviewing the Boulder Street Gallery agreement since there will only be PPWS members (no outside artists in the cases) and in consideration of changes in the physical layout of the space allowing for more wall space at differing price points as well as limited case space available to members. Remember other media is permitted to PPWS members. Call Myra to get on the waiting list as new contracts are being signed.

Joan Judge is updating the website, and Diane Vulcan will be taking over as webmaster in the fall. Anyone who is teaching may be listed on the website with their ongoing contact information. Dates of specific classes being offered will not be listed. DO INCLUDE what you teach, your website, email and an image. People can click on your website for specific information.

Becky Plack encourages us all to log into our Facebook accounts, look up the PPWS Members Group and PRESS THE “JOIN” BUTTON. If you do not have a personal Facebook account, you might also consider establishing one. It’s just that easy!

The meeting was adjourned at 7:00 PM.

    Respectfully submitted,Marianne Flenniken, Secretary

  • May Program:

Louis Panagini presented a wonderful and stimulating talk and painting demonstration at the May meeting. He spoke about his experiences in art, his privilege to study in China and his friendship with other artists. He spoke of artists as being “shape makers” and demonstrated the concept on under-painted papers he had prepared. Louis was wildly popular as he “raffled” paintings and shared his mini travel watercolor kits. Louis is a treasure!

    June Program:

Carol Naylor and Reveille Kennedy have invited Tara Thomas, Executive Director of Education of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, to give a presentation for their Wounded Warriors Program along with a veteran, who will also speak to us. PPWS has just made a sizable contribution to this program as was mentioned in the February 18 Board Minutes in the March 2015 newsletter, when it was decided that they would be the beneficiary of our charitable contributions to a nonprofit.

    Message from Kay Beaubien

Artist contributions to the Silent Auction for the Humane Society Fur Ball was amazing this year. Art brought in $3,555, which was 15% of the silent auction. The donations of the PPWS members were very much appreciated. In total, the event raised $23,800, which will go a long way in taking care of animals and the Humane Society’s education programs.

    Again, a huge THANKS.

PPWS May Meeting and Louis Panagini Watercolor Demonstration - May 20, 2015

Our May meeting was held at Cottonwood Center for the Arts on Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Carol Naylor conducted the meeting, which was extremely well attended. Kang Lee Sheppard presented Mary Sue Copeland with a certificate and pin for attaining signature status.

Reveille Kennedy had arranged for Louis Panagini, to give a presentation and demonstration at a standing easel. Louis spoke about his background, getting his start as a note engraver in New York. He is very well traveled and spent time in China where he received training in the Oriental style of painting. He came to friend many well-known artists living on the East Coast, which had an influence on his work including the notion that “less is more.” Mr. Panagini showed us a collection of little travel palettes he created and demonstrated his simple techniques which started out with an abstract background underpainting. He was fond of giving away his demo paintings as well as small pieces of his art. Everyone enjoyed his knowledge and humor as much as he enjoyed doing it for us.

Mr. Panagini now lives in Colorado Springs and was accompanied to our meeting by his daughter, Susan McKeithen, shown here with Carol Naylor. Thank you both for being our guests and demo artist for the evening.
