President’s Lettercontinued from page 1

Often our work is inspired by the changes in our personal lives. As children, we were taught that a successful piece of art was one in which we managed to color within the lines. In order to succeed, we needed to be conservative and use green for the grass, blue for the sky and trees were brown. Some of us find the freedom and the daring to change this attitude, and we have art with improbable colored skies, multicolored animals and, gracious me, crooked lines! This is the most difficult challenge we make in our first steps to break out of our routine and into a whole new world of freedom. Many of us find comfort in the way we have painted for two years. Do we look with suspicion after five years? Perhaps we should. Have we achieved what we set out to achieve? Has our work progressed or stayed comfortably the same? After ten years, we should be happy enough to keep going in the direction we have taken. Or it's time to throw it out! Try a new style, take an oil class, take a zumba class, do something to stimulate those elusive creative brain cells!

Our society is making some changes. We are looking at the future to become a vital asset in the artistic community. We have the power to change the way people view art. We made a great leap by helping the Bemis School of Art to provide additional special needs educational programs. We had the ability to educate the public about the sophisticated and difficult medium of watercolor by participating in community events like the paint-out at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum this summer. People joined our society and are taking classes because of this outreach. Now we are looking further down the road, exploring ways to fund a gallery, more international shows and perhaps even purchasing a building to house our society.

Of course, this means change. Change in the way we relate to each other socially and artistically. Building friendships, not just acquaintances. Changing our meeting schedule to accommodate more time for interaction. Perhaps having demonstrations that involve audience participation. Snacks and desserts instead of a full meal. Encouraging membership renewal and a "bring a friend" program. Some changes are easy, some are not. Hopefully, we will make the right decisions to lead the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society and our member artists into a future where we will indeed be recognized in the local, national and international world of art!

The meeting was called to order by Carol Naylor, President, at 6:30 PM. Carol had members help carry in the paintings that were in her car from the Airport Exhibit. She reminded us all to stay after the meeting and help the chefs and hosts clean up.

Guests: Guests were introduced. Mary Ann Bobko is a watercolor artist who expressed an interest in joining. New member, Kay Beaubien, was introduced.

Minutes: September Meeting Minutes were approved.

Hosts & Chefs: Thanks were given to our hosts, Liz Engel and Darlene Hoffacker, and chefs, Barry Holmes and Nancy Neale. Scheduled for the November meeting are Kristina Storey and Mary Taylor as hosts, and Judy Swanson and Kathleen Murray as chefs.

Treasurer’s Report: Kathleen Murray was out of town and promised to have the financial information by the end of the month for the newsletter. (See Page 7)

Committee Reports:

Marketing: See Larry Haught’s comments below.

Program: Tara Thomas, Director of Education of the Bemis School of Art, spoke about how our donations have helped them, the programs at Bemis and about her role there.

Laurel Bahe will do a demonstration for November. (See Page 6)

Library: Myra Patin announced our "library special of the month.” Anything with a fall cover or an October issue is half off. Also, every other publication is $1 or six for $5.

Membership: Barbara Will Wallace,

our new membership chairperson, reminded everyone that dues for this year are now past due. If you wish to stay current, please send her your renewal form, which is on the PPWS website.

Signature Members’ Show: Dennis Palsgrove, show chair, was not in attendance. Previously stated dates for the 26th Annual Signature Members’ Show, which will be held at Cottonwood December 6, 2013, through January 18, 2014, with an opening reception on December 6, still hold. (See Page 4 - information and forms on Pages 9, 10 & 11)

Old Business:

Building Purchase: Larry Haught reported that he had contacted Jan Oyler’s son, Andy, to look into finding a building we could buy. He told Andy that we would prefer to have a building in, or close to, Old Colorado City. The price range for buildings now available are from $100,000 to $650,000. Andy recommended bankers he knows that are willing to work with nonprofits. It was decided to set up a tour for the building committee to look at some properties. Our goal is to work on getting a building in the next four to five years. Larry suggested that we contact the Pastel Society and the Art Guild to see if they would be interested in participating.

Larry also said that he had spoken with Steve Quiller to determine if he would be interested in doing a workshop. Steve showed interest in a February workshop. It was mentioned that we could use Emmanuel Lutheran Church which has a room to accommodate 20 participants for a 3-day workshop. It was brought up that Mr. Quiller has relatives in Colorado Springs, therefore, we would not have to provide for a hotel. Kang Lee suggested that we consider a

workshop by Martha Mans. Becky Plack suggested that we get Buffalo Kaplinski, plein air watercolor artist from Elizabeth, Colorado.

Cocktail Party: Carol Naylor again brought up the previously suggested cocktail party as a way of thanking those involved in Watermedia. People that would be invited are those from the Pioneers Museum, Cottonwood, Stargazers, Academy Art and Frame, TMR, and the Colorado Springs Airport. Discussion ensued regarding where and when to have this. Carol and Karen Standridge offered their homes. It was decided that it would be held on Sunday, November 17, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Carol Naylor's house. Carol asked for a volunteer to organize what people should bring. June Galez will organize food and carpools. She can be contacted by email at: [email protected]

New Business:

Meeting Social: From last month’s small group sessions, it was strongly suggested by several people that we discontinue having a meal at our meetings. Instead, snacks and/or desserts were suggested. A show of hands vote decided 20 to 14 that we have snacks and/or desserts only. Carol suggested that we try this for 6 months to determine how it works out. It will be up to the chefs at the November meeting (see above) whether they will bring snacks or desserts or both. It was also decided to start at 6:00 PM, instead of at 5:45 PM. December’s meeting will STILL BE OUR POTLUCK DINNER.

Membership: Carol suggested that we expand memberships to corporations and other groups, i.e., colleges. She also stated that the “new membership packet” will be

Page 4: NOVEMBER News 2013 - Pikes Peak Watercolor …...Emmanuel Lutheran Church which has a room to accommodate 20 participants for a 3-day workshop. It was brought up that Mr. Quiller has

reinstated and suggested that we have a flyer for PPWS.

Building Fundraiser: Laurel Bahe suggested that we each donate an unframed 6x6 inch watercolor to be sold for $25 at our Members’ Show to grow our “building fund.” We also need to look for another venue to have the 2014 Members’ Show since Cottonwood has already been booked. It was probably our oversight and another reason that we should look into our own building.

Pandora’s Box: Pandora's Box, a program we have done in the past, was brought up for discussion. Everyone seemed to feel that the interest just wasn't there. Roberta Povelite reminded us that Pandora's Box was first started to spark creativity in the group. PPWS then went on to work with a chosen school to promote our interest in helping youth. We decided to postpone Pandora's Box for discussion at another meeting.

Members’ Classes: Myra Patin said that she had at the library table a list of members who give classes. Those giving classes should put flyers there so that anyone interested can sign up. She also reminded anyone who puts flyers on the table to pick them up at the end of the meeting.

Group Social: We all agreed that sitting in small groups at the beginning of the meeting was a good way to meet other people. It was suggested that everyone sit with someone different every month. GET TO KNOW YOUR FELLOW MEMBERS!

Crowing & Bragging: The basket was passed around, but Carol did not announce individual accomplishments. Instead, she asked for those who sold work during the

month to stand. There were a number of members who sold one or more paintings with prices that ranged from approximately $100 to $400.

The business meeting was adjourned at 7:15 PM.

Respectfully submitted,Jean Forsyth

Program: After a short break, Carol Naylor introduced Tara Thomas, Director of Education at the Bemis School of Art. Tara explained how our donations to Bemis have been used. She said that the donations to the program for at-risk children have made it possible to hold classes every week instead of every other week. She showed us some of their work and told some touching stories of how our dollars are making a difference. The classes are helping 35 to 40 children of The Griffith Center for Children and 25 from Nueva Ventura. The program at Wasson High School is for children and adults. Tara said that they were working on starting a program for young adults at Dale House.

She also brought in artwork from veterans who attend the “Military Creative Expressions” program at Bemis, a collaborative effort of the Fine Arts Center and AspenPointe. This program, that we also help to fund, is not only for physically injured soldiers, but also those with PTSD. Bemis is working on a 8 to 15 week program with UCCS for soldiers to get college credits. She also told very moving stories about these veterans.

Tara appreciates our support and welcomes anything we might be able to do for Bemis and their programs.

PPWS Meeting & Presentation by Tara Thomas of Bemis School of Art, October 16, 2013

Carol Naylor, President, conducted her second meeting to a well-attended and animated group.

Our chefs, Nancy Neale and Barry Holmes, put out an unusual spread, which we all enjoyed.

Tara Thomas, Director of Education of the Bemis School of Art spoke about the many service men and women who avail themselves of the Military Creative Expressions Program, a

collaboration of the Fine Arts Center and AspenPointe.

Larry Haught, Vice President, presenting his findings thus far on the possibility of purchasing our own facility.
