PRESIDENT SHERRY’S “SPARKLE MORE!” MESSAGE

He was born in Paris to Chinese parents.

At the age of four, he held his first cello.

He was taught to play the piano and cello

and he eventually attended the Juilliard

School of Music. He was a shy young

man, but at the age of 12, he began to play concertos with the Doctor’s

Orchestra of New York.

Now, at the beginning of his performance, this master cellist greets his

audience warmly as if he were a gracious host making his guests feel at

home. He has built a successful career on his two-fold dream: to bring

classical music to its highest level of expression, and to bring people

together through music. Yo-Yo Ma is seeing his dream come true.

Yo-Yo knew that his dream was a big risk, but he took a risk and jumped in

and the gamble paid off. He has been able to bring people together with

music – a collection of albums and he has been rewarded with countless

awards.

There has been a personal price for him though. He now suffers from

painful tendinitis, but he continues to schedule concerts and help talented

young musicians see their dreams come true. No matter the cost, the dream

was worth the price.

There is always a cost to see our dreams come true. There is always a

personal price to be paid for those things that are most important, but if

they are important, we will work to see our dreams come true no matter the

cost. So, it should be with our dream of growing this wonderful

organization. It is vital that we not let the dream of growth die because the

road is difficult. We need to take the risk. We need to continue to work

ESA for St. Jude Jr. Chair Celeste Webb “Never Give Up on a Dream”

Happy Summer, ESA! I am so looking forward to July and the IC

Convention, so we can see the results of all of our hard work for St. Jude

Children’s Research Hospital! We are such an amazing service organization, working hard for

the kids at St. Jude - we’re unbelievable!

Now, I’d like to issue a challenge to each of you. Some Sunday in June, when the sun is shining,

sit on your porch or patio with a cold drink and count your blessings. Yes, I know some have

more blessings to count than others, but we all have blessings to count. Now, you’ve finished

your drink and your blessing list, right? Think hard about joining the Memphis Marathon ESA

Team or a Walk To End Childhood Cancer Team! Both of these events are months away so you

have time to sign up. Can’t get to Memphis in December or a city where a walk is held in

September? Join a virtual team! Each one of us has the opportunity to participate in one or both

of these events. I understand life happens -- as last December I signed up for my first Memphis

Marathon and did not get to attend due to some health issues with my husband. We can’t control

the future, but we can infuse our lives with action. We make things happen! Join our teams or

write a check to support a fellow member. Remember the kids fighting cancer. The future is in

our power!

See you in St. Louis!

“Summer Outreach Projects”

Looking for some awesome summer outreach projects that you can do yourself, with your

family, neighbors or your whole chapter? Try these:

• Host a “dog days of summer” party and invite guests to bring a donation of pet food for

the animal shelter. Summer months often find them with triple the number of animals in

their care than during winter months. Serve hot dogs and traditional BBQ fare. This

works as an easy block party if you’re looking for a great weeknight excuse to reconnect

with your neighbors.

• Partner with a co-worker, neighbor, or your chapter and collect non-perishable food for

the foodbank. When school breakfast and lunch programs end in the summer months,

many families struggle mightily to make ends meet.

• Try a workplace project, the more relaxed atmosphere of summer might be the perfect

opportunity to introduce some fun service activities to co-workers via ESA.

For assistance with an outreach project, contact ESA HQ

SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED!

The submission deadline for Inspiration Library projects

to be included in the IC convention showcase has been

extended until JUNE 30, 2017. While everyone will

continue to host Imagination Library projects throughout

2017-18 as our national focus project, the Inspiration

Library submissions received by June 30, 2017 will be

eligible for awards and recognition at IC convention. The projects will all become part of the

Inspiration Library where members can search any time for new project ideas shared by fellow

ESA’ers that all have a focus on connecting with the community along with doing good. See a

project you like in the Library? You can even contact the submitting member for tips and

Chi in Anderson. The pattern will feature Missouri ESA, St. Jude, Hope for Heroes and

Easterseals. (See photo in this newsletter.)

The Oral Auction will have an awesome quilt made by Shirley Krcmar of Ohio.

The pattern is by Rebecca Ruth Designs called “Night Trains” and features a Steam Train, a

Diesel Train and a Bullet Train. (See photo in this newsletter.)

We will also have a St. Jude quilt with St. Jude Alphabet design to auction for the St. Jude

Scholarship. (See photo in this newsletter.)

Ken and Parker Tracey with Greek Marketplace Merchandise have donated another heavy gold

jewel pin for the Oral Auction.

These are just a few of the wonderful items that you will have the opportunity to bid on at the

Foundation Fund Fest Event.

Please encourage your state membership to bring or send lots more nice auction items that

everyone will want to bid on. We still need sponsors, patrons and workers so please let me know

if you can help. My e-mail is: [email protected].

SOME FOUNDATION FUND FEST AUCTION ITEMS:

YOU CAN BID EVEN IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND!

During the Foundation Fund Fest, we will be auctioning off a few quilts. The Foundation Board

is thrilled with the donations and wanted to give those of you who might not be attending IC

Convention or the Fund Fest a chance to see them and place a bid on them.

The first quilt’s theme is the St. Jude patient alphabet. If you’ve ever been to the hospital, you

will have seen these works of art on the walls. It is a very moving piece. Money raised for this

quilt will go toward the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Cancer Survivor Endowment.

The next quilt’s theme is all about ESA and features our different projects and special events.

This is being offered as Missouri’s “basket” in the live auction.

In keeping with the IC Convention theme, Shirley Krcmar from Ohio has created a beautiful

train quilt.

If you won’t be attending the auction, but would

like to make a bid on any of the quilts, please

contact Rosalee Echele at

[email protected] and let her know how

much you would be willing to bid.

The Foundation Board truly appreciates the time,

talent and thoughtfulness that went into making

these beautiful items.

NEW MEXICO THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT STATE Carol Johnson, President

Greetings from New Mexico - The Land of Enchantment!

New Mexico had a successful year with loads of fun and fellowship. With

co-hosting IC Convention in Loveland to hosting the Rocky Mountain Regional Roundup in

August, it was a whirlwind year.

Our membership took on a special project this year. "Camp Enchantment" provides our pediatric

oncology patients at UNM Hospital a chance to get away from it all and just have fun - as

children should be able to do. The call was met by our Rocky Mountain members donating over

80 beach/bath towels; our state membership donating 30 children's camp chairs and monetary

donations to top it off. What a joy to see such generosity. The children will certainly benefit

from these donations.

There was also a "Dream" come true when we welcomed a new Elan chapter with nine members

strong. Alysha Wagley will see another generation of ESA'ers along with her mom, Bobbie

Massey. We are so happy to have this addition to our state.

I had a great time this year as one of "Sherry’s Sparkles" and I look forward to seeing everyone

again soon.

TEXAS THE LONE STAR STATE Teresa Gray, President WOW! What a Magical Year it has been in Texas! The Texas State

Convention was held the first weekend in May in Corpus Christi, right on the

beach. Our weekend started Thursday with a Pre-Convention Party at a cute

artist shop featuring local artist works. Friday morning began with my Invitational Breakfast in a

sunny room by the ocean. My board honored me with a song and a beautiful bracelet from

Brighton with charms summing up my year. Our workshop focused on fundraising ideas and we

learned to make cake pops.

The former Mayor of Corpus welcomed us and Trumaine Thomas from ALSAC updated us on

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Friday night we were entertained with skits performed by

the 2017-2018 Executive Board Candidates. Saturday the District Presidents and Coordinators

dressed up like characters from Disney’s Magical Kingdom to give their District reports and

presented me with an amazing quilt featuring each districts symbol. Donna Carter really out did

herself with this quilt!

Our Awards Luncheon was brightly colored with each District dressed and decorated in an

assigned color. There were noise makers, pom-poms, horns and more. It was like a pep rally, as

we celebrated each other’s amazing accomplishments this year.

Saturday night Linda Waters was installed as our 2017-2018 Texas State President in a beautiful

ceremony. Cathy Kauffman of District I was named as our Outstanding ESA’er.

Sunday, we honored our lost members in a Celebration of Life ceremony and recognized years of

service ranging from 5 to 65 years. I was inducted into the PPAC in a fun presentation in honor

of my first skit done to Patsy Clines “She’s Got You” – my skit was titled “The Little Things.”

I can’t believe my year has ended. It was an amazing ride, one I will cherish forever!

WISCONSIN THE BADGER STATE Lorene Fosso, President

Wisconsin had a wonderful 2017 Convention in Madison, Wisconsin from

May 5-7, that was hosted by Beta Zeta. We played a game at our mixer,

held our assemblies, had a fun Educational, elected our new State Officers

and our Committee Chairs gave their report updates. We recognized 11 members with their

Service Pin Awards and one member with a Pallas Athene Award, and recognized chapters with

their Service Awards and had a Card Making Workshop.

Vicky Jones, Past IC President, was our IC Representative who attended our Wisconsin

Convention. She shared an IC Council message. We were honored that she presented three of

our members with their 50 year service awards, installed our new State Officers, installed the

outgoing president into the Crown Jewels and installed the 2017-2019 Crown Jewel officers.

Chip Shaffer, Hope for Heroes Chairman, was our MARC Representative at our Convention. He

shared a MARC message about MARC hosting the 2017 IC Convention in St. Louis, Missouri,

shared information about Camp Hope and that MARC needs Board members for next year. We

really appreciated Chip presenting a Workshop on Hope for Heroes. He is so dedicated to this

ESA project.

As my two year term as Wisconsin President has now ended, I would like to thank Sherry Day,

IC President, her board and committee members for the wonderful job they have done to keep

Wisconsin members informed about ESA events, projects, etc.

I would like to also thank my Wisconsin Board for their service to and for helping me in so many

ways. Thank you to our Chapter Presidents, Committee Chairs, and to our members for their

support of our philanthropic projects and for making a difference in the lives of others.

Finally, congratulations to our new Wisconsin State President, Val Priebe. We look forward to

her leadership.

WYOMING THE EQUALITY STATE & COWBOY STATE Roxie Lenox, President Greetings from Wyoming!!

Our little state has been busy this year. Most of us have finished our projects for the year and

sent off those important reports. We hosted garage sales, sold popcorn balls, and pies and held

bake sales. Of course, we also worked our annual radiothons to help raise money for our St.

Jude kids!!

As I write this, we are now gearing up for state convention in a few weeks. The year has gone

fast, but I have made some great memories.
