By JOHN NELSON Tailgate News Editor A Gurdon First United Methodist Church minister told Rotarians Thursday about the availability of flood buckets through area Methodist churches designed to get people started in cleaning up homes, businesses, camp sites etc. that were dam- aged by Tuesday’s flooding. The Rev. Mike Proctor said, “We have given away between 10 and 15 large buckets so far, with cleaning products, gloves, laundry detergent, OFF mosquito spray, clothes pins and more in them,” he said. “I have 12 still available and can get more. If anyone needs them to get started on their flood damage clean up, they can call our church at: 870-353-4469 or City Hall at: 870-353-2514.” Proctor said the flood buckets are through United Methodist Church on Relief (UMCOR). He gave one bucket at the meeting to Rotarian Ashleigh Pennington, loan officer at Bank of DeLight in Gurdon, to help her clean up her area deer camp. Pennington said the water at her camp had not been that high since 1982. Proctor said the coordinators of the UMCOR flood bucket proj- ect are Bryan and Jane Mann, who work on the church’s relief effort in Oklahoma and Arkansas, coordinating efforts with the feder- al FEMA relief program for long and short term help. Hard hit area communities, such as Nashville and Dierks, who also got more than 10 inches of rainfall Tuesday, were also given bucket aid. He said the Assembly of God and Baptist denominations are also involved in flood relief efforts. “Each of our relief buckets means a $55 investment. The idea is to show love and reduce panic,” the Rev. Proctor said. “People grieve, get tired and weary and blame God. Our effort is show people we are here to help get flood recovery started. God’s people do care. We did a similar bucket program in Nashville 20 years ago.” Proctor said Clark County Emergency Services Coordinator Tate Chandler is also involved with UMCOR and area flood vic- tims needing a bucket start-up can call Chandler at: 870-246- 0013. The biggest flooding in Gurdon from Tuesday was at Plyler’s Hardware on Highway 67. Record flooding throughout the city was a reality. Several accidents, water rescues, businesses flooding, washouts and a tree down were on the menu. So far no reports of injury or of any home flooding have crossed my desk. Depending on where you check, we received 10 to 13 inches of rain in 12 hours. Interstate 30 was closed in both directions due to flooding and a lot of traffic came through Gurdon on Highway 67. The highway was almost impassable south of Georgia Pacific. Vehicles were able to traverse the water single file in the middle of the road. It will take a while to repair the damages, but recent dry weather will help. The Gurdon Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting for the Go- Devil Nutrition Den on Main Street was a big success. Throngs of peo- ple attended the event on Saturday morning. The place was packed with more than 50 patrons. Proprietors Carrie and Andrew Stanley said that they appreciated the turnout and the support from the Gurdon Community. The Gurdon Go-Devils are practicing hard and are heading toward a great season. It looks like the city is going to take over the mowing of the Rose Hedge Cemetery. We want to keep it maintained consistently and with all the rain, the rising cost of paying to have it mowed and the low response to cemetery dues letters, it is looking like the best option. Have a great week. Sherry’s Corner
