The history of railway system in Eritrea goes back to the time of Italian colonization over Eritrea mainly for the purpose of transporting Italian war machines to the highland. Originally the railway system was meant to connect Massawa with Asmara but later after the then Italian ruler felt he has the power to conquer Kassala thought to enlarge the

system to the area but it stopped short to reach only up to Bisha.

Construction of the railway system began in 1887 from the city of Massawa heading towards Asmara. The construction of the railway had to go through difficult and challenging mountains and high cliffs and that it had to take substantial engineering works and hard work and that it took several years to reach Asmara in 1911, in 1922 to Keren and in 1932 to Bisha.

The construction of line had

also to take difficult and narrow turns and to fit that narrow gauge railway had to be applied. The line required 36 bridges and 39 tunnels. That was considered at that time renowned world class achievement.

By 1935 the railway line was so

much busy carrying quantities of supplies for the Italian war effort to control Ethiopia and that the line saw 30 trains daily and by 1965 the line was carrying nearly half a million passengers a year as well as 200,000 tons of freight.

However, from 1941 the

Eritrea’s Ancient And Historical Railway System

Part I

progress of the railway line began to see its setbacks. The Allied Forces from 1941 onwards began to demonstrate that they had the upper

hand and the Axis members that included Italy were on the run loosing step by step every land the occupied. In 1942 The Italian army was defeated in most parts of Eritrea by the British Army and with that the railway line connecting Agordet with Bisha

was destroyed.During the years to come under

the British protectorate, the Eritrean railway line and other port facilities have witnessed more damage and destruction. The British in 1944 dismantled the Italian built, in fact one of the wanders of the time in Africa, Asmara-Massawa Cableway that supplemented the railway as a means of transportation inland, and the equipment was sent to British colonies elsewhere.

In 1953 Eritrea was forcefully

and illegally annexed by the Haileselasie regime of Ethiopia. And the railway line successfully operated until the 1970s after which it fall more and more out of use as the armed struggle for Eritrean independence escalated. In 1975 the Derg regime destroyed the railway line and its infrastructure and used the material salvage for construction of fortifications. That was the end of the railway history for years to come before independence.

Today’s article is a continuation of the last two articles extracted from Joseph Murphy’s book en-titled ‘The Power of Your Own Subconscious Mind’. The book is

really inspirational one. I hope this extract will be a stimulating one.

■ How suggestion killed a manHere is an illustration of hetero-

suggestion: A relative of mine went to a crystal gazer in India who told him that he had a bad heart and predicted that he would die at the next new moon. He began to tell all members of his family about

this pre-diction, and he arranged his will.

This powerful suggestion en-tered into his subconscious mind because he accepted it completely.

My relative also told me that this crystal gazer was believed to have some strange occult powers, and he could do harm or good to a person. He died as predicted not knowing that he was the cause of his own death. I suppose many of us have heard similar stupid, ridiculous, su-perstitious stories.

Let us look at what happened in the light of our knowledge of the

way the subconscious mind works. Whatever the conscious, reason-ing mind of man believes; the sub-conscious mind will accept and act upon. My relative was happy, healthy, vigorous, and robust when he went to see the fortuneteller. She gave him a very negative sug-gestion, which he accepted. He became terrified, and constantly dwelt upon the fact that he was go-ing to die at the next new moon. He proceeded to tell everyone about it, and he prepared for the end. The activity took place in his own mind, and his own thought was the cause. He brought about his own so-called death, or rather destruc-tion of the physical body, by his fear and expectation of the end.

The woman who predicted his death had no more power than the stones and sticks in the field. Her suggestion had no power to create or bring about the end she suggest-ed. If he had known the laws of his mind, he would have completely rejected the negative suggestion and refused to give her words any attention, knowing in his heart that he was governed and controlled by his own thought and feeling. Like tin arrows aimed at a battle-ship, her prophecy could have been completely neutralized and dissi-pated without hurting him.

The suggestions of others in themselves have absolutely no power whatever over you except the power that you give them through your own thoughts. You

have to give your mental consent; you have to entertain the thought. Then, it becomes your thought, and you do the thinking. Remember, you have the capacity to choose. Choose life! Choose love! Choose health!

■ the power of an assumed major premise

Your mind works like a syllo-gism. This means that whatever major premise your conscious mind assumes to be true deter-mines the conclusion your subcon-scious mind comes to in regard to any particular question or problem in your mind. If your premise is true, the conclusion must be true as in the following example:

Every virtue is laudable; Kind-ness is a virtue; Therefore, kind-ness is laudable.

Another example is as follows:All formed things change and

pass away; The Pyramids of Egypt are formed things; Therefore, some day the Pyramids will pass away.

The first statement is referred to as the major premise, and the right conclusion must necessarily follow the right premise.

A college professor, who attend-ed some of my science of mind lec-tures in May, 1962, at Town Hall, New York, said to me, “Everything in my life is topsy-turvy, and I have lost health, wealth, and friends. Ev-erything I touch turns out wrong.”

I explained to him that he should establish a major premise in his

thinking that the infinite intelli-gence of his subconscious mind was guiding, directing, and pros-pering him spiritually, mentally, and materially.

Then, his subconscious mind would automatically direct him wisely in his investments, deci-sions, and also heal his body and restore his mind to peace and tran-quility.

This professor formulated an overall picture of the way he want-ed his life to be, and this was his major premise:

“Infinite intelligence leads and guides me in all my ways. Per-fect health is mine, and the Law of Harmony operates in my mind and body. Beauty, love, peace, and abundance are mine. The principle of right action and divine order govern my entire life. I know my major premise is based on the eter-nal truths of life, and I know, feel, and believe that my subconscious mind responds according to the na-ture of my conscious mind think-ing.”

He wrote me as follows: “I re-peated the above statements slow-ly, quietly, and lovingly several times a day knowing that they were sinking deep down into my sub-conscious mind, and that results must follow. I am deeply grateful for the interview you gave me, and I would like to add that all depart-ments of my life are changing for the better. It works!”

The Administrator of Anseba region, Mr. Gergis Girmai, has called for stepped-up collaboration on the part of communities and government bodies for still more gratifying outcome. The Administrator made the call at the Administration’s annual assessment meeting, during which he pointed out that the role of communities in general and that of sub-zonal Administrators in particular is significant as regards sustaining water conservation for agricultural purpose.

According to the reports presented in the course of the meeting, the efforts made to develop some select seeds and mixed mode of sowing in Hamelmalo and Hagaz sub-zones have given rise to a positive outcome. Moreover, the construction of a dam in Hashferai has reached finalization and 2 ponds have been put in place in Balqai as well as Ad-Sheikh villages, while temperate fruits introduced in the sub-zones of Geleb and Halhal are in a good condition.

Accordingly, significant accomplishment has been made pertaining to adult education, and the putting in place of new schools in various localities of the region is nearing finalization. A number of villages including Hawsha, Dembe-Adi-Tsegai, Ashera, Berekentya, Deroq and Gizgiza have become beneficiaries of potable water supply at a total expenditure of more than 23 million Nakfa, and further efforts were made to meet the water demand of Keren city.

It was stated during the meeting that the ongoing rural electrification process in the region has witnessed outreach to 31 villages this year, as the inhabitants of Asmat and Kerkebet sub-zones become beneficiaries of mobile telephone service.

The participants of the meeting adopted future work plans for the forthcoming year and the role of sub-zonal Administrators was emphasized as being vital in their implementation.

Daniel Semere

The insatiable appetite that the fact of being young bestows has the capacity of giving the impression that one can do it all, and even more should do it all; all at once. One ends up initiating, often impetuously, too many tasks for the resources one has, in terms of time, resource, or know-how. This in turn leads to premature results that ultimately will require revision and hence proving to be more of a waste or liability than a ground for further improvement. Of course the desire, the sense of eagerness, or even the enthusiasm could not be a bad thing, no matter what the result of the endeavor is. In fact it is a fundamental requirement, for nothing of importance happens without this component instigating actions first. However it is equally important, if not more, to be able to understand ones ability in terms of time, resources, or know-how for the task one is undertaking. This assessment should be as accurate as possible, even though every now and then one has to take a risk as long as that risk doesn’t compromise one’s future in a major way, and if the odds aren’t that much tilted to the opposite direction from what one aspires.

This is part of being strategic. In my high school days there

was a bright student. He never failed to be a rank student in each grade. His mastery of each and every subject was remarkable that he was admired by his colleagues and teachers. But then he was just a student and thus has basically one responsibility which helped him to be focused. Much to his credit he completed his college studies and graduated. After graduation however, he grew more embittered with his inability to repeat his successes of education afterwards. Emboldened by his success, he was so ready for the new challenges that would await him after graduation. He dragged himself into too many commitments that he couldn’t properly give enough attention to all the commitments. But that was not his greatest mistake as he could have read the sign and take notice that these were too mouthful to chew. Had he done so, he could have easily made the proper amendments and revise his plans vis-à-vis his ability to carry out them in the proposed time. Rather he started blaming his ‘failures’ on his colleagues; and at times he started complaining about how life never works out the way you planned it and that it is unfair. This

of course never leads to anywhere. If anything it eventually leads to the internalization of ‘blaming’, so much so that he would always find an alibi for his weaknesses instead of searching a solution for it. People who used to know and admire him for his eagerness and enthusiasm in his studies never failed to be amazed and often time to be sympathetic with the state of despondency he is in. Even by the time he downsized the activities he was engaged in, he had already lost the appetite for any challenge and seems to be perfectly alright with finger pointing and the blame-game.

Things begging for one’s attention have proliferated. We may want to continue our studies, start a

Recognizing Limits

business, help family, or even start a family. Choices we make could also become so costly that we may not afford to make too many mistakes, which in turn creates pressure. Making a prudent decision therefore requires that we properly understand our ability and prioritize our tasks. Arranging the tasks in priority might help us address our plans with great effectiveness and efficiency. For instance starting a business might enhance our ability to help our families, so for some of us it might be best that it comes first. For others all might work well if continuing studies comes first. It is our situation and context that defines the ability we have and what dictates our priority and strategic planning.

At the other end of the spectrum, we come to communities and nations. The best example as far as making the same analogy goes is projects termed “white elephant projects” in many developing countries. These are over-ambitious projects that don’t take into consideration the concept of sustainability. The key word here is ‘sustainability’. Ambitious to scale up in the ladder of development, many countries embarked upon huge projects, primarily industrialization, without the proper assessment of their capacity to sustain them. some of these projects later proved to be a liability than an asset as much needed funds and resources are pumped in vain attempt to sustain them. This left many tasks that needed urgent attention unattended, hence dragging development.

In other instances, resources are overstretched in numerous projects. Projects that needed to be carried out are many and it might not be that much difficult to initiate many of them. It might even be possible to get that many projects start functioning. Sustaining them however, is another story. One needs to be prepared for expenses

and the demands of sustaining before embarking on them. Or else the result would ultimately be disappointment when the eventual failure becomes eminent.

A rural area who used to pump water from a well manually would surely welcome a project that proposes to build a centralized tab water that would alleviate the strenuous work. However, the project should, in advance, think of its ability to keep this scheme going for a long time. If there would be no fund and resource with which the generator would be fixed when the inevitable time for repair comes, it might actually be a recipe for disappointment. Because the people could not only get the water by the generator, but they also couldn’t pump water manually as it was replaced by the generator. The society would actually be worse-off. The resources directed at the project actually bears an unintended fruits and hence a waste. However, they could have been managed well so that they would be directed to a much more effective endeavor.

Achievements are usually gradual. One has to master the challenges of one task and move on to the next. The first achievement should be the underpinning of the next to come. One’s education should show its effectiveness by forwarding invaluable insights in the kind of business one establishes later. The business later should bear fruits that would enable one to make a significant contribution in helping one’s family and others. Likewise nation should focus on projects that would bring the intended result to the people, for a long time. Resources shouldn’t be scattered so far from each other that accrual of further development becomes inconceivable. This might be a simplistic observation but it nonetheless is a point that needs a serious thought.

Meron Abraha

Today is the first day of 2014. Happy New Year’s Day! May it bring tidings of love, success and happiness and may all our wishes and innermost desires come true this year!

But what is a New Year? Is it not only another day in a cycle of 365 that humans have put forward for their own measurement of time?

Okay! Just because we are humans we might be entitled the right to celebrate the beginning of a New Year every time around, just like we do birthdays and anniversaries… but waiting only for the new year for self-improvement and to make a difference is just wrong – an excuse. And a lame one at that!

I’m obviously talking about the famed resolutions that people are seen making on New Year in a bid to correct the faults of past year while making the new one flawless (God willing).

There is no reason why we should wait for a New Year to begin when we could certainly bring the changes we need on any other day in the course of the year. Most of the time we seem to forget that the year we are waiting for to end was also a new one in its time

But, come to think of it, avoiding the bad habits and improving the good ones should be a task for every day; because every day is a brand new day and one for reflecting upon self-improvement.

Last year when 2013 was knocking, I resolved not to make any New Year’s resolutions. Instead, I offered that as people we should at least think in terms of the day’s resolutions. One doesn’t necessarily need a resolution for something he or she can do every day, after all.

But instead of resolutions [which are often vague to begin with and can make us feel bad if not completed], we could perhaps opt for a list of things that we want the most.

In lieu of making resolutions, alternatives that don’t have the concept of success or failure are suggested. People can choose a word, or even two or more (they could be emotions that are important to them) as a personal mantra for the New Year and focus on living right by them. Happiness, courage, strength, generosity, determination, simplicity and the like are good examples.

That way people don’t have to wait for the New Year to bring changes to their lives. They could instead ponder at

Every Day is a Brand New Day

the wake of every day on how smarter or (God forbid) sillier they have become than the day before.

Many an occasion, the New Year has been regarded as a new book, each day being the blank pages to be filled with our actions. There are often many unfinished things in our lives. Things that we know are

always sitting at the back of our minds and which we wish we had done.

And that brings our motto to seizing every day and make use of it to the maximum.

And in seizing the day, no one other than Horace could have better described it for us in his immortal words “Carpe Diem!”

“… Carpe diem, quam minime credula postero…,” which translates into “…Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future…”

Horace used this aphoristic phrase to illustrate how the future is unforeseen and how one should limit from making plans for the remote future. one should do all one can today to make one’s future better.

If that is the case, then why wait for tomorrow when we have today.

Hasn’t it been said “Today is the tomorrow we talked about yesterday”?

Every day, as I walk into my office, the first thing I inevitably see before I even sit down is a piece of paper affixed

on the wall with an anonymous quote that has been a font of inspiration to many people. It goes like this:

“This is the beginning of a new day. I have been given this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. But what I do today is important, because I am exchanging a day of my life for it! When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something that I have traded for it. I want it to be gain and not loss; good and not evil; success, and not failure; in order that I shall not regret the price that I have paid for it. I will try just for today, for you never fail until you stop trying.”

Looking at it every time reminds me to try to make a difference that particular day (or moment).

So what about you? Will you seize the day? Or simply use the New Year just to start fresh on old habits or making resolutions that you know won’t keep?

Today is a new day. Let’s seize this moment, this opportunity, and this day. After all every day is a brand new day! Carpe Diem people!

Venezuela’s inflation soared to 56.2 percent in 2013, although, the rate slowed in the last months of the year following government imposed price cuts, officials say.

President Nicolas Maduro presented the figure on Monday, blaming the high rate on a “parasitic capitalist economy.”

The inflation rate for this year is almost three times as high as in 2012, when it reached 20.1 percent.

According to the central bank, the rising rate slowed in the last two months of this year after Maduro’s government ordered stores to cut prices.

The national consumer price index declined from 5.1 percent registered in October to 4.8 percent in November and 2.2 percent in December.

Analysts say the nation’s high inflation is a result of the country’s rigid currency and price controls that were imposed in 2003 by late president Hugo Chavez.

However, Maduro said if it had not been for government-subsidized food programs, “there would have been a famine.”

The killing of elephants has increased sharply in Tanzania since the government suspended its anti-poaching operation after a month, Deputy Tourism Minister Lazaro Nyalandu has said.

Sixty elephants were “butchered” in November and December, compared with only two in October, Mr Nyalandu added.

The security forces adopted a shoot-to-kill policy against poachers when the operation was in force in October.

The government suspended it after an inquiry reported human rights abuses.

“The anti-poaching operation had good intentions, but the reported murders, rapes and brutality are totally unacceptable,” Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda was quoted

A rescue mission for a ship stuck in ice in Antarctica is under threat as reports have emerged that one of the assisting vessels may itself be stuck.

Fifty-two passengers and four crew members were due to be evacuated by helicopter from China’s Xue Long ship as soon as conditions allowed.

However, the Xue Long has barely moved in a day and may be stuck in the ice.

More than 19,000 people have been forced to leave their homes following a series of fresh volcanic eruptions in western Indonesia, officials say.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Tuesday that Mount Sinabung, located on the island of Sumatra, erupted nine times late on Monday and Tuesday morning, spewing lava and clouds of gas up to 7,000 meter in the air.

“On Monday night, 19,126 people fled their homes, and we expect that number to rise,” Nugroho said.

“Mount Sinabung remains on the highest alert level and we have

Celebrations around the world got under way to mark the start of 2014, with thousands attending the traditional spectacular pyrotechnics in Sydney.

Earlier, Auckland in New Zealand was one of the first cities to ring in the new year, at 11:00 GMT on Tuesday.

In Japan, Shinto priests gathered at shrines to prepare to usher in the new year.

Other cities globally also had big displays, with Dubai attempting a world record for the largest display.

The displaywas streamed live on the internet and organisers say it will stretch over 30 miles (48km) of seafront, with the highest fireworks reaching more than one kilometre in height.

While celebrations are expected in major Chinese cities, the city of Wuhan called off its display in order to avoid worsening the city’s smog

The ship is stocked with food and is in no danger, the team on board says.

The planned air evacuation required that the two icebreakers in the immediate area - the Xue Long and the Australian Aurora Australis - be positioned close to each other in open water, clear of the pack ice.

However, the captain of the Xue Long has told the Shokalskiy that he is keeping his vessel in a “holding position”.

The Aurora Australis, is now understood to be planning to carve through the dense thick pack to assist the Xue Long.

The initial plan had been for a helicopter from the Xue Long to carry people in groups of 15 up from the pack ice next to the

then be transferred by a small boat, deployed from the Australian icebreaker, onto the Aurora Australis.

The expedition members would then have travelled to Australia’s Antarctic base at Casey some four days’ voyage away.

However, if the Chinese vessel is also stuck and the Australian vessel cannot help it reach clear water, there will be no airlift.

Under the initial plan, the remaining crew members would have stayed on board until another, more powerful US icebreaker arrived in up to 10 days’ time, the BBC’s Andrew Luck-Baker reports from on board the Akademik Shokalskiy

However, it may now be that all of those on board may have to wait for the US icebreaker, the Polar Star, he adds.

Earlier attempts by Chinese and French icebreakers to reach the ship were also foiled by the thick ice.

The Shokalskiy was trapped on Christmas Eve by thick sheets of ice, driven by strong winds, about 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart - the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania.

According to Maduro, the Venezuelan right-wingers backed by the United States have waged an economic war to bring down his government.

“If Venezuela was not subjected to this economic war, we would have single-digit inflation, not 56 percent,” said Maduro.

The president also called on the country’s opposition to act “without relying on the United States ... without conspiring against our country.”

Furthermore, Maduro promised that 2014 would be “the year of the establishment of a new internal economic order.”

He continued by saying, “A powerful element will be the new law on costs, profits and fair prices,” referring to a decree that limits the earnings that a business can make.

Mr Nyalandu said that, with the operation suspended, the government would appeal to foreign donors to help strengthen Tanzania’s wildlife department and ranger service.

“Those to be approached include the European Union and Asian countries. Asian countries are reportedly the main consumers of elephant tusks and by-products,” he said.

There is huge demand for elephant tusks in many Asian countries, where they are used to make ornaments.

Nugroho further explained that police and soldiers were patrolling the danger zone to evacuate those who refused to leave their homes.

According to the National Disaster Agency, Mount Sinabung has been throwing out red-hot ash, rocks and floods of molten lava as high as 7 kilometers (7,000 meter) since early November.

On November 13, more than 5,000 people were evacuated from seven villages in the area.

Dozens of active volcanoes are located in Indonesia and the country lies on the major tectonic fault lines known as the “Ring of Fire” between the Pacific and Indian oceans.

In 2010, more than 350 people lost their lives following a series of volcanic eruptions in Mount Merapi in central Java.
