For 10 years now, Utah has been earning the top spot for states with the best economic outlook. However,

beneath the veneer of Utah’s impressive economic growth and low unemployment rate lies other equally

powerful realities that help explain why 391,610—or 13%—of Utahns still face hunger. Multiple factors

outside of these economic numbers shed light on the increased pressures of life as a member of the working

poor. These factors include too many newly created jobs in low-wage occupations; high rates of uninsured

children and minorities; and housing costs that have continued to rise due to insufficient affordable housing

options. It’s easy to see how setting aside savings for emergencies is difficult for those hovering at the

poverty line. Add to that one health crisis or employment disruption, and the harsh realities of hunger

become much clearer.

The good news is that the number of food-insecure Utahns has decreased by 6% in the last year. But sadly,

the amount of food we are distributing and number of clients we are serving has increased. Our job is not

easy—we have one of the largest service areas of any food bank in the country at 84,899 square miles.

In fact, our fleet drove enough miles last year to circle the equator 19 times! The vastly different obstacles

faced by rural and urban Utahns poses another challenge. So, too, does the varied rates of food insecurity:

11% of Summit County residents are food insecure, while in San Juan County that number is 19.8%.

Despite these challenges, we remain committed to continuing to offer food and services free-of-charge to our

149 partner agencies. Last year, we doubled the output of our summer meal program, expanding for the first

time into Utah County and serving over 87,000 summer meals. We extended the reach of our Mobile School

Pantry program by 50%, thanks in part to O.C. Tanner Company’s donation of a new Mobile Pantry truck,

affectionately named “Gracie” after their founder’s wife. We also distributed 905,000 more meals than we did

last year—that’s two additional meals for each Utahn facing hunger. On top of all this, our Grocery Rescue

program diverted over 15 million pounds of healthy food from local landfills.

Utah Food Bank has been in operation for 114 years, and as much as we wish we could be put out of

business, we see no signs that the need for our work is diminishing. Fortunately, the remarkable generosity

we receive through donations of food, time, and money ensures that our work of Fighting Hunger Statewide

can continue. Each day, we fight for the Utah children going to bed on empty stomachs, the senior citizens

who must choose between medicine and food, and the families struggling to decide between a roof over their

heads or food on their table. Your support is a vital weapon as we continue this fight!
