Welcome to When Faith Meets Pedagogy 2015 On behalf of Catholic Curriculum Corporation, it is my pleasure to welcome you to When Faith Meets Pedagogy 2015 , October 22-24 at the International Plaza Hotel, Toronto Airport. This year’s theme is “ Embraced, Centred & Gathered as God’s Family” , inspired by Pope Francis’ declaration of the Year of The Family David Wells, Director of the Vicariate for Evangelisation, Diocese of Plymouth, England will take center stage and deliver keynote addresses on both Thursday evening, October 22 and Friday morning, October 23. David Wells is an internationally known speaker in Europe and North America and expresses a particular fondness for When Faith Meets Pedagogy as it was at WFMP that he was introduced for the first time to North American audiences. He continues to do work throughout Canada and the USA. A highlight of our conference continues to be the inspiring liturgies throughout the three days. I am grateful to our liturgy committee members and to Most Reverend William McGrattan, Bishop, Diocese of Peterborough , who will preside at The Celebration of The Eucharist, Friday, October 23. In addition, approximately 60 workshops will be presented by experienced and expert educators as well as feature speakers during Friday and Saturday Sessions. When Faith Meets Pedagogy has become known as a “conference for teachers, by teachers”! A conference such as this takes many months of planning and we appreciate the collaboration of our member boards who provide the human resources to the planning committee as well as our partner organizations upon whom we rely for counsel: OECTA, CPCO, CARFLEO, ICE. David Wells is the Director of the Vicariate for Evangelisation in the Diocese of Plymouth. His role is to encourage opportunities for life-long learning amongst volunteers in parishes and professionals in schools. Most of his time is spent organising training courses and conferences to help equip people to speak confidently about their faith. David has contributed to the production of catechetical resources in the UK and North America and spoken at more than 300 conferences worldwide. He is a regular contributor to the Religious Education Congress at Anaheim in California, where over 30,000 delegates gather to hear some of the world’s most prolific religious writers. In the USA he was a contributor to the Echoes in Faith Programme by RCL Benziger. He has also spoken at some of the largest gatherings of teachers in Canada and appeared on Canadian television. In the UK he has served on several working parties for the Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales, guest lectures at three English Universities, and in 2000 he scripted and produced the video series “You, your Children and their Catholic faith” which sold widely throughout the English speaking Church. Bishop Malcolm McMahon Chair of the Department for Education and Formation in the Bishop’s Conference described David as a “Remarkable and gifted speaker.” David began his career as a high school teacher, teaching religious studies to critical teenagers. He describes his early days in schools as “A testing training ground in the art of inspiration and perspiration.” “There are few environments more challenging” he says, “Than walking into a classroom of over stimulated distracted testosterone fuelled teenagers with nothing more than an instruction to teach Mark’s Gospel.” He later worked for the Catholic Education Service in London as a research assistant and gained an M(Phil) having researched Effective Methods in Teacher in-service Training. David is married to Alison and they have three teenage children and a very badly behaved dog. David lives in Exmouth, East Devon where, when he has an opportunity, he enjoys the beauty of living close to the sea. He has recently published a new book entitled “The Reluctant Disciple” published and available from Novalis.

Father James T. Mulligan is a member of the English Canadian Holy Cross Fathers. Father Mulligan is from Welland, Ontario. He studied at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, (Philosophy) and at the Gregorian University in Rome (Theology). He was ordained to the priesthood in 1968. Father Mulligan has a Matrîse in Catechetics from the Institut Catholique in Paris and a Doctor of Ministry from the University of Toronto. His ministry as a Holy Cross Father has largely focused on Catholic education. He taught religious education at the secondary level for twenty five years and has extensive background in working in faith formation with teachers in Ontario’s Catholic school system. Father Mulligan has written five books on Catholic education, all published by Novalis: Evangelization and the Catholic High School – 1990; Formation for Evangelization – 1994; Catholic Education: The Future Is Now, 1999; Catholic Education: Ensuring a Future, 2005 and A Pastor’s Journal – Catholic Parishes and Schools Working Together, 2015. He has collaborated on a number of Catholic education endeavours in Ontario and has lectured on Catholic education and evangelization in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland. From December 2000 to September 2004, Father Mulligan served on the General Administration of the Congregation of Holy Cross in Rome where he had responsibility for the education and social justice portfolios for his congregation. From November 2004 to December 2013, Father Mulligan has served as Pastor of St. Kevin’s Parish, Welland, ON. In January 2014, Father Mulligan continued his ministry at St. Kevin’s as Associate Pastor. In January 2010, Father Mulligan received the Niagara Catholic District School Board Catholic Educator Award of Distinction for his many contributions to the Catholic education project in Niagara and beyond. In June 2010, Father Mulligan was made a Fellow of St. Mary’s University College in Calgary Alberta, for his singular contribution to the formation of student teachers and the ongoing formation of Catholic educators for Catholic separate schools.

Michael Pautler is the Executive Director of the Institute for Catholic Education (ICE), a position he has held since 2013. Established by the Catholic Bishops of Ontario in 1986, the Institute for Catholic Education works in partnership with organizations that promote, maintain and shepherd publicly funded Catholic education across the province. ICE has a particular emphasis on religious education curriculum and other subject areas as they relate and intersect with Catholic teaching, working closely with the Ministry of Education. Michael Pautler is an experienced Catholic teacher and leader with 36 years of service in Catholic education, including 24 years of diverse administrative leadership experience. He has worked in Catholic education as teacher, Vice-Principal, Principal and in senior leadership roles at the school board level. Prior to coming to ICE, he served as Director of Education for the Halton Catholic District School Board, serving more than 30,000 students in 50 schools. He has extensive experience in curriculum development and is a recipient of numerous honours including the Diocesan Medal of Honour (Diocese of Hamilton), Distinguished Leadership Award (Ontario Catholic Supervisory Officers’ Association) and Canadian Educator of the Year (Niagara University College of Education). He is also the Program Director of the Catholic Community Delivery Organization, overseeing the delivery of the Supervisory Officers’ Qualifications Program for those aspiring to senior leadership roles in Catholic schools.

A1 FEATURE SPEAKER Lessons Learned from A PASTOR’S JOURNAL

A PASTOR’S JOURNAL (Novalis 2015) is a positive, hope-filled account of the ways four Catholic schools and a parish work together at forming young people in the faith and at connecting with more than a few families who tend to be strangers to regular parish life. This JOURNAL is an extended reflection on the variety of ways the Catholic school can be a rich locus pastoralis for evangelization. The intention of this presentation is to share some of the insights and comment on some of the reflections gleaned from this book. The first moment of this presentation focuses on the overall content of A PASTOR’S JOURNAL and suggests a process for how the Catholic school and the parish might cooperate in transmitting the faith. A second moment elaborates on the changing cultural and ecclesial context in which the transmission of faith occurs today, and on how the changing context really shapes the evangelization that takes place in the Catholic school. And for all of the partners of Catholic education, a final moment of the presentation underscores the different dimensions of the urgency inherent in the contemporary Catholic education project.

A3 Catholic Digital Learner: Student Portfolios & Dig ital Citizenship

With the goal to integrate student digital portfolios in the K - 6 classroom, this project will provide teachers with a classroom-ready resource to establish a tangible culture where student work is curated and shared on line through whole-group and individualized portfolios. Teachers will have access to a number of 21st century infused lessons, inquiry activities and digital resources including a tech tool kit that speaks to the digital learner and Catholic digital citizenship.

A2 Embracing our Faith through Play -based Learning

The workshop will offer full day kindergarten educators ideas, inspirational provocations, list of resources, and read aloud suggestions to help nurture religion and faith based opportunities. The workshop will focus on aligning the soon-to-be released Full Day Kindergarten Program Document through a Catholic lense. The four frames in the new document are designed to reflect the integrated way in which learning happens through inquiry and play in the kindergarten classroom. The focus of the workshop will centre on how Belonging and Contributing, Self Regulating and Well Being , Demonstrating Literacy and Mathematical Behaviours and Problem Solving and Innovations can be embraced, centred and gathered around God`s family of faith.

A5 Creating a Culture of Belonging in Catholic Schools A variety of resources have been developed to support the efforts of schools and school boards in

creating and sustaining a culture of belonging in our Catholic Schools. This workshop will support a broad-based approach to equity and inclusion, but will offer a particular focus on working with students experiencing same-sex attraction. A6 Implementing the New History & Geography Curriculum from a Catholic Perspective

This workshop will focus both on developing a deeper understanding of the revised History and Geography curriculum, including: topic changes, using the inquiry model, teaching for big ideas and using framing questions, the new concepts of disciplinary thinking, aligning assessment to the Growing Success document and cross-curricular integration; and on teaching History and Geography from a Catholic perspective. Participants will have an opportunity to understand that the principles of Catholic social teaching such as stewardship and the common good are not additional themes in History and Geography but a way of thining about the topics and issues that make up the revised curriculum. The workshop will demonstrate how the new Nelson History and Geography resources have been revised to align with the new curriculum and our Catholic mandate. This workshop will share the experience of attending the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia with the practical implementation of the content for our secondary classrooms. In this hands-on session, we will show how students should develop their thinking: how initially, they will need to work with hands-on materials, then represent this with diagrams before being able to use symbols to show their thinking. We will investigate bar models, arrays, empty number lines, division spokes, the Pythagorean Rule, and circles. We will also see how Spatial Reasoning is crucial in developing Number Sense. A12 Faith in Action: Empowering Youth Disciples Throug h Leadership

Inspired by Mary`s FIAT (Luke 1:38) the Faith in Action Team is a student-lead faith leadership group comprised of youth from grades 3 to 8. The role of this group is to experience the gift of our Catholic faith and to promote faith building opportunities within the school, parish and home. The team works on school and church initiatives to help everyone grow in prayer, build community, foster family and community outreach. This includes: fulfilling liturgical roles at weekend Masses, leading prayers at the school & parish, social justice awareness and fundraising, attending a retreat, outreach to our nursing homes and much more! A14 Our Leadershi p Journey: Shepherding Inspiration The Catholic journey and education are emblematic of one another: powerful iterations of shepherding

toward a future with hope. In this session, we will explore leadership in Catholic education at a time in which such leadership is becoming increasingly counter-cultural. We will examine sensitive and responsive approaches to leading and teaching which inspire rather than prescribe explicit courses of action, opportunities for organic building of relationships in community which foster and sustain trust and interdependence. Participants in the session will have the opportunity to examine and reflect on a variety of leadership paths through the sharing of practical examples ranging from the thoughtful analysis of data to the implementation of programs and initiatives which support and enliven the mission of the Catholic school - with a focus on the complexity of the work and, perhaps more important, on maintaining a “pure moral disposition of the heart” (Immanuel Kant). The Religious Education and Family Life Curriculum Documents (Elementary and Secondary) invite students and teachers to employ critical and creative thinking skills and/or processes that include theological reflection (e.g. examining issues in light of Scripture and Tradition and determining meaning for life). We will examine: What is theological reflection? What models of theological reflection might we employ in the classroom and into our lives? This workshop will assist Junior and Intermediate teachers with better understanding how to use the Inquiry framework to help students develop questions, think critically, and take action against issues of social injustice in their world. B13 The Faceless Doll Project

This is a commemorative art project that allows students to use their creativity to honour and remember the Aboriginal women and girls in Canada who have gone missing or have been badly harmed. Each doll represents the story of a woman or girl who is loved and missed by her family. The act of making the dolls aids us to remember how important every girl and woman is. Participants learn that when our women and girls go missing, it is like they suddenly become invisible to the rest of the world. It is like they have no voice to be heard. Participants will be reminded that even though we don’t know who all of these women and girls are, we do know that they are all important, and each person is a gift from God. Participants will learn that when we do not put a face onto a doll it means that the doll isn’t one woman or girl, but that it is EVERY woman and girl who has ever gone missing or been harmed. Participants are told that when we put all of our Faceless Dolls together, we are giving back the voices to all of these women and girls so they will never be forgotten. Participants will carefully create their doll and pin it on the Circle of Life Blanket to be displayed in your school, parish or community. Upon completion of the WFMP presentation we invite all participants to embrace The Faceless Doll Project and present it in their own schools. By raising awareness about this serious problem and standing united, we are working to make things safer for all girls and women in our communities and elsewhere in Canada. Schools at York CDSB are creating mats and pillows from milk bags. These are sent to 17 developing countries for families or hospitals in need of beds. This workshop is meant to equip teachers with some strategies to help increase the joy experienced by early learners during literacy sessions. It is geared towards affording teachers an opportunity to leave the workshop with ideas as well as materials which can be adopted/ adapted to meet the learning needs within their classrooms in their various contexts. The workshop seeks to address the misconceptions that teachers may have relating to the early literacy journey from Phonemic Awareness to Early Reading. Being a trained Reading Specialist and coordinator for a reading program funded by OECS/US government and a 12 year Kindergarten teacher who frequently provided training for Kindergarten teachers island-wide, lots of the activities will be drawn from previous training workshops. Additionally, I will draw from best practices to provide teachers with strategies to help enhance the literacy experiences offered to children in their daily practices. In this practical hands-on workshop you will explore ways to explore Religious literacy through the arts (specifically visual arts and music). During this workshop, participants will be creating a puppet relating to the Bible stories. We will focus on modern stained glass window symbols found in a Toronto Church. (ie. the crow and the crown of thorns) Participants will receive a unit of study infused with the arts as well as templates and an exemplar puppet that you will be making during the workshop. You will go away with a variety of fun ways to spark the interest of even your most reluctant learners.

D3 Finding Comon Ground: The Three Abrahamic Faiths

Jolene will share her experience of attending the Bossey Ecumenical Institute in Geneva, Switzerland in August 2014. During these three weeks 19 people gathered from around the world, somewhat evenly divided male/female and Christian/Jewish/Muslim to explore the concepts of building an interfaith community while focusing on the theme "Religion and Climate Change: Together Safeguarding Creation". This workshop will help broaden our perspective on interfaith relationships, challenge our own responses to this topic and give practical ideas to use in the classroom. This is an interactive workshop in which participants will have the opportunity to consider some of the issues in their own communities and be able to apply some of the lessons Jolene learned in Geneva in their own communities across southern Ontario. This workshop would be beneficial for anyone interested in interfaith dialogue and especially for high school Religious Education teachers.
