With almost 70% growth of its population from the 90s, Nigeria, the most populated country of Africa, stands at number 8 in the status of countries with the most population in the world.

Over-Population may soon become a serious problem, coupled with being one of the lowest life expectancy rates of the world.

Presently, it is populated by 167,423,000 citizens and this number will go up to almost 389,615,000 by the middle of 2050! (Source: Internet World Stats)

GUI & Mobile Development Process

• GUI (Graphic User Interface) – very significant for Mobile design • Particularly for the creation of graphic design for mobile Apps.

• Main goal of mobile UI considers constraints & contexts, screen, input and mobility as outlines for design.

• Mobile UI design's goal is primarily for an understandable, user-friendly interface.

• The UI of mobile apps should: consider users' limited attention, minimize keystrokes, and be task-oriented with a minimum set of functions.

THE GLOBAL CHALLENGES

Page 17: PRESENTER: CHRIS UWAJE (FNCS) (Chairman/Chief Software Architect) e-NIGERIA 2014 WELCOME TO THIS PRESENTATION BY MOBILE SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS Conference Theme:

Technology Limitations

• Limitations of the Wireless Network– limited communication bandwidth – frequent disconnections– heterogeneity of fragmented networks

• Limitations Imposed by Mobility– route breakages– lack of mobility awareness by system/applications

• Limitations of the Mobile Device– short battery lifetime– limited capacities

Limitations of the mobile environment

Page 18: PRESENTER: CHRIS UWAJE (FNCS) (Chairman/Chief Software Architect) e-NIGERIA 2014 WELCOME TO THIS PRESENTATION BY MOBILE SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS Conference Theme:

OTHER CHALLENGES

• Java is a portable implementation language, any application created with Java can be run on any machine which contains a Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

• J2ME, is similarly a portable language, which can be run on any mobile device which contains a JRE, however this portability is severely affected by the heterogeneity of the mobile devices currently on the market

• Mobile devices display a wide range of characteristics that will greatly effect a mobile application’s performance, usability, functionality, etc.

• OTHERS (DISPLAY SCREEN SIZE, MEMORY, PROCESSING, INPUT MODE, NETWORK SECURITY)

SUPPORT FOR FUTURE DEVICES

APPROACH - MOBILE WEB APPS• Use standard web technologies such as HTML 5, CSS 3 & JavaScript.

• Features of HTML 5 - Advanced UI components, access to rich media types, geo-location services & offline availability.

• Increasing popularity of HTML 5 in rendering engines such as WebKit.

• Runs on a standalone mobile web browser.

• Installed shortcut, launched like a native app.

• UI logic resides locally; makes the app responsive and accessible offline.

ADVANTAGES:• Multiplatform support.• Low development cost.• Leverage existing knowledge.

DISADVANTAGES:• Limited access to OS API’s.

Mobile Development and Testing Tools• EMULATOR TEST BED: Mobile applications are first tested within the development environment using emulators

before field testing. • Testing applications on remote emulator mobile phones are inexpensive. • Some examples of tools used for testing application across the preferred OS.1. Google Android Emulator• Google Android Emulator is an Android emulator that is patched to run on a Windows PC as a standalone app,

without having to download and install the complete and complex Android SDK. It can be installed and Android compatible apps can be tested on it.

2. The official Android SDK Emulator• The official Android SDK Emulator includes a mobile device emulator which mimics all of the hardware and

software features of a typical mobile device (without the calls).

• MobiOne• MobiOne Developer is a mobile Web IDE for Windows that helps developers to code, test, debug, package and

deploy mobile Web applications to devices such as iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and the Palm Pre.

• TestiPhone• TestiPhone is a web browser-based simulator for quickly testing iPhone web applications. This tool has been

tested and works using Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2 and Safari 3.
