Balancing Simplicity with Security

Direct cloud access (default)Cisco product sends usage information directly over the internet. No additional components are needed.

Direct cloud access through an HTTP proxy Cisco Products send usage information over the internet via a Proxy Server. Any off-the-shelf Proxy will work.

Mediated access through an on-premises collector – connectedCisco Products send usage information to a local Mediator such as the Smart Call Home Transport Gateway (Free VM Download), which automatically completes the transaction with the backend.

If you have access to multiple accounts, they will all display when you log into CSSM. Click the account name you would like to manage. Your access role is listed in the Access Role column.

Product InstancesWhat are Product Instances?

A product instance is an individual device with a unique device identifier (UDI) that is registered using a product instance registration token. You can register several instances of a product with a single registration token. Each product instance can have one or more licenses that reside in the same virtual account.

Usage

Product instances must periodically connect to the CSSM servers during a specific renewal period. If a product instance fails to connect, it is marked as having a license shortage, but continues to use the license. If you remove the product instance, its licenses are released and made available within the virtual account.

In the General tab of virtual account, click New Token.In the Create Registration Token dialog box, enter a description and the number of days that you want the token to be valid for. Select the checkbox for export-controlled functionality and accept the terms and responsibilities. Click Create Token to create token.

Token is required to register the product. Registration tokens are stored in the Product Instance Registration Token Table that is associated with your smart account. Once the product is registered, the registration token is no longer necessary and can be revoked and removed from the table. Registration tokens can be valid from 1 to 365 days.

During the device configuration, you must enter some commands to register your device so that it can communicate to the Cisco Smart Software Manager.

Smart Call Home should be configured on the device. Here is an example of a Smart Call Home configuration:

Transferring a product instance from one virtual account to another virtual account does not result in the corresponding licenses being transferred. You will have to transfer the licenses separately.

When you remove a product instance from the software, you are removing it only from the table. The licenses that the product instance was using are still available and can be used by other products. You must re-register the product instance with the cloud so that it can communicate with the product again.


Product InstancesFailed to Connect – Insufficient Licenses

In the Run Licenses Report dialog box, enter the name and description for the and select all or specific Virtual Accounts from the drop-down. Depending on your preference, click Run Report or Export to Excel or Export to CSV.

Email NotificationSet Email Notification Preferences

You can choose what notification messages you want to receive. In the Navigation pane, click Email Notification. Click the checkbox next to the appropriate email notifications.Click Save to save your preferences.

In the Navigation pane, click Users.Click New User to add a user.In the New User dialog box, enter email id and click the Assign a Role drop-down menu to assign role.Click Continue. A preview of the new user information displays. Click Add User to confirm.

Here are the roles that can be assigned to users in CSSM.

Role Responsibilities

Smart Account Approver Has rights to approve the Cisco Smart Software legal agreement.

Smart Account Administrator Has rights to set up and manage all smart accounts.

Smart Licensing Administrator Manages the following tasks for the assigned smart accounts: Creating a new user Creating or deleting virtual accounts Generating tokens Transferring licenses and product instances between virtual accounts Managing Satellites

Virtual Account Administrator Manages the assigned virtual accounts by performing various tasks, such as generating tokens and transferring licenses/product instances between these accounts.

Roles


SatellitesCisco Smart Software Satellite supports products that do not have connectivity to the Cisco network or have limited network access. It is used for the 4th tier of security. If you enable this layer of security you will manage your satellites here.

• In LRP you can filter by the smart account see all licenses associated with the account instead of only what is associated with you as an individual

• Provides more holistic view to your licenses

2. Convert unfulfilled / partially fulfilled PAK Licenses to Smart Licenses

• Smart equivalent SKU must exist

• Enables you to view and manage SKUs in CSSM

• Convert before or after assigning to Smart Account in LRP

• Unfulfilled PAK = none of the license components are activated or in use

Log back into CSSM. The license quantity has not increased to 11, reflecting the licenses you converted. Now you can transfer these licenses to other virtual accounts and use the licenses management features available in CSSM.
