A Heart for the Arts
As a younger person, I never fully appreciated Mel Brooks. I was that
type who loved the deep, serious, dramas and the character-driven,
complex historical thrillers (if that’s even a thing, I can’t remember). I
think I must have thought that all the light-hearted romances and
comedy satires weren’t worth watching. Boy was I wrong.
The older I get, the heavier my soul gets. Even though I live a
wonderful life in a first-world country, and work at a theatre, for goodness sakes. But still the stresses and anxieties of adulting in this culture (bills, children, aging parents, broken marriages, teenagers, and the almost weekly funeral) make me seek the laugh over the crisis any day. I tell my teenagers that I am all full up on anything other than “light and giggly” when they are filling me in on the latest episode of The Walking Dead, or whatever their Netflix drama of the week is. And Max and Leo, two guys I wouldn’t ordinarily like - I find myself
rooting for them! Perhaps I see a little of myself in each one - minus
the sex-with-little-old-ladies thing. Oh, and minus the let’s-try-and-
do-the-worst-show-ever thing.
Speaking of that. Community theatre. Wow. The most challenging
kind. Mel Brooks loved it and we happily gave birth to his beauty. I
hope that as you experience it, you keep a light heart, laugh out loud,
and walk away having found the “light and giggly” tonight. I have
a feeling you seek it out, just like me. I appreciate Mel Brooks now.
There is no way to properly thank my comrades who trudge through
the details so I can sit and watch and talk. Sincerely. You have my
loyalty forever. You in this art humbles me.
Finally, our prayer is that you see the gift that the FOA is to
Northeast Arkansas. From C.S. Lewis to Mel Brooks - the FOA can
work through all kinds to bring growth in individuals and
community. If you do see that, please pray that others see it as well.
Good, Orderly, Direction is here at the FOA.
With a Heart for the Arts,
Kristi
