THANK YOU!

Last August, we gathered in this room to kickoff the United Way campaign. Now, we gather to celebrate our accomplishments. Together, we raised over $932,000. But beyond the dollars raised, it’s the impact we make in our community. Thanks to you, we have a new 24/7 information and referral hotline (2-1-1) for all who live and work in Union County to use. Thanks to you, we have a safety net for families flirting with homelessness. Thanks to you, over 900 children under the age of five receive a free book each month in our early childhood literacy program. And these are just the tip of the iceberg. There are few things more fulfilling than completing your campaign and knowing that the effort you put into it will make an incredible impact in the lives of people right here in our community! We hope you felt that as you turned in your results. And we hope you feel our deepest gratitude and appreciation today.

Scotts associates brought home the bacon with a $25,000 “Kiss the Pig” fundraiser during their workplace campaign. The effort engaged executives, their friends, and vendors from around the country.

You know that if you have an emergency at any time of the day, you can pick up the phone and dial 9-1-1 to be connected to local police, fire, and medics. But what if you received an eviction notice and needed rent assistance? Wanted to know if there were programs that helped with home repair? Or want to talk about an aging parent who needs help to remain living independently? Union County residents are now able to dial 2-1-1 to be connected to a 24/7 hotline for information and referral to access local human services. 2-1-1 is United Way’s response to a gap identified in the 2011 Community Needs Assessment about a lack of public information for available community services. Survey respondents reported that they struggle to navigate the social service network in Union County and didn’t know where they could turn for help. So in collaboration with a number of funding partners, United Way is contracting with Helpline of Delaware and Morrow Counties to staff the hotline, maintain a database of available services, and update a website. 2-1-1 promises to end that confusion and serve as the community’s first call for help. “It’s another way for people to get connected for those things that happen in the middle of the night or the middle of the weekend when most offices are closed,” said Susan Hanson, who has been Helpline’s Executive Director for the last 17 years. “Their problem might be able to wait until the next day. But at the very least, there’s someone on the other end of the line to talk them through their problem, make a plan, or get them the resources they need right away.”

For the fifth straight year, United Way will issue a record-level of financial support to local programs that support thousands of Union County residents. The Board of Trustees approved $725,370 in program support at its January meeting. That’s up 6.6% from last year’s total. We were able to make that investment even though donations to the annual campaign were off about $10,000 from a year ago. A complete recap of 2013 funding is detailed on the program insert. The amount of funding requested by local agencies was $86,000 more than the money available to allocate. “The overall theme that the Community Investment Committee displayed would best be described as ‘immediate needs,’” said Mike Rose of Union Rural Electric and committee volunteer. “Those agencies that provide for food or shelter would take priority.”

United Way added a staff member for the first time in 10 years with the addition of Terri Sproull, our new Event Coordinator. Terri will work to organize all of our special events, such as Community Care Day and more.
