Evaluation Question 2How does your Media product represent particular social groups?

My music magazine represents 1960's rock and roll, and this is represented in the costume that my model is wearing. She is wearing a simple 1960's straight dress, with retro style green headphones, and her 60's style makeup is exaggerated. I researched into the fashion to get my costume correct, and I am pleased with how the model represents a particular social group. I also researched into different models that were famous in the 60's, and from doing this I found out that in a lot of their photographs they had a blank expression, and were looking straight forward. I therefore used this in my magazine to increase the 1960's look.

Costume and makeup

inspirationApart from Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, I was inspired by the singer Janis Joplin. These two images show the similarities between the two artists. They are both smiling, both have accessories, and could represent a ‘hippie’ look.

The fact that one of the photographs has been edited black and white make the image look more old fashioned, and therefore represent the old fashioned music that is featured in the magazine. At first I planned to have all of the images black and white, but later decided to have most of them in colour, to show the modern side of the magazine as well as the old.

Black and white

'This is Aretha, and she is going to be on the front cover of my magazine. Aretha is 21, and is a singer / model. Her style is similar to the artists in the 1960's, and therefore I believe she will be perfect to have on my front cover.

I have chosen to use a girl this age on the cover, to hopefully attract more teenage readers who are interested in my magazines style of music, as well as the older generation who would have listened to the bands featured when they were teenagers in the 1960's. This will hopefully widen the audience.

I have decided that I am going to use black eyeliner to create 60's style eye make up, and have her wearing a Mary Quant style dress. I will add 60's style jewellery, which will include a headband placed over the top of her hair, going across her forehead, and circle shaped earrings. I have taken inspiration for this from Jean Shrimpton, and Twiggy, who are two of the most iconic models in the 1960s.'
