ST. PAUL ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH MANY CULTURES, MANY COUNTRIES, MANY LANGUAGES IN ONE BODY: ST. PAUL’S FAMILY

TODAY’S GOSPEL On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, "Everyone is looking for you."

STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE

“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.”– Mark 1:35, 38

In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes - healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God.

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

Thank you for your generosity!

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would

aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

Who do you take your troubles to? Jesus' disciples freely brought their troubles to him because they found him ready and able to deal with any difficulty, affliction, or sickness which they encountered. When Simon brought Jesus to his home, his mother-in-law was instantly healed because Jesus heard Simon's prayer. Approach him with expectant faith. God's healing power restores us not only to health but to active service and care of others. There is no trouble he does not want to help us with and there is no bondage he can't set us free from. Today’s gospel passage invites us not only to consider the meaning of true faith, but also the meaning of service.

he does not want to help us with and there is no bondage he can't set us free from. Today’s gospel passage invites us not only to consider the meaning of true faith, but also the meaning of service. Simon’s mother-in-law may not be named, but she is the first human character in the Mark’s gospel story said to “minister” or “serve”. In other words, the love of God working through Jesus draws her beyond herself to engage in a ministry of caring for God’s people. Mark is beginning to provide a new definition of the way the world works. Later in the gospel, we find that Jesus understands his own mission in terms of ministry or service: he came “not to be served but to serve (or minister) and to give life…” (Mark 10:45). That same evening, Simon’s house becomes a magnet for “the whole city”. Jesus heals their sick and afflicted and, early in the morning, he seeks the solitude of a “desert” place for prayer. The disciples seek him out, as everyone is looking for him. Jesus makes it clear to them that he must move on and bring God’s word and healing beyond the city to the neighboring Galilean towns. The message is for us as well as for those early disciples. Amid all the demands of a sometimes frenetic lifestyle, we too must search out the solitude of a “desert” place for prayer and reflection so that we might engage with renewed energy and insight in whatever the new day brings. For Reflection: “Do I take my troubles to Jesus with expectant faith that he will help me? Do I, like Jesus, withdraw to a quiet place to put my priorities in order and to remember who I really am and what my mission is? Like Jesus, do I serve others?”
