Callum White

This week brings us to Week 4, Term 4, which means that there is only two weeks to go before the

“rollover.” In week 6 this term, the week commencing 10 November 2014 our school will begin a

new school year and all students will move into the class above. Concepts, skills and knowledge

absorbed and learnt over the last three and a half terms will be revised and cemented in readiness

for new learning.

This change provides a fantastic opportunity to refocus and reflect on, as students and teachers,

areas of success and areas that can be improved upon in order to develop and strengthen what

we’ve achieved already this year. For those who haven’t applied themselves to the best of their

abilities, regular practice of our HOW2Learn focus habits, resilience and resourcefulness, will assist in

making the changes that you need to in order to succeed.

We have many events to look forward to as a school in the remaining weeks of this term. We bid a

final farewell to our 2014 College II students on Thursday 30 October 2014 at the College II Formal

and wholeheartedly wish them all the best for their future. They have been an enormous asset to

our school community and I am certain we’ll hear of many outstanding achievements in the future in

regards to this group.

Presentation Night is on Thursday 6 November 2014. This occasion is certainly a cause for

celebration. The many students who have really challenged themselves all year both in and outside

the classroom are recognised for their achievements and we, as a school community, can show our

appreciation by acknowledging the students who have continually chosen to apply themselves to the

best of their abilities all year. You are a credit to our school community. Congratulations!

Our Year 6 students recently experienced high school life and enjoyed a series of creative and

practical lessons last Friday to assist in preparing them for Year 7. The students conducted

themselves incredibly well and seemed to really enjoy the day. A huge thanks to Mrs Arnall for

organising the Transition Days and the teachers who delivered such outstanding learning

experiences for our students. Well done!

To commemorate the end of primary school for our current Year 6 students, a celebration evening

will be held on 20 November 2014 at the school Multi-purpose Centre. This seemless ease of

transition from primary into high school highlights the unique environment that we have here in our

K-12 school. I am certain that our current Year 6 students will embrace the change in structure of

their schooling and continue to thrive.

The capacity to learn is a gift;

The willingness to learn is a choice.

SCHOOL SURVEY Closing soon, please take the time to complete our survey! Batlow Technology School is currently embarking on the process of creating a new school plan to drive school improvement. All schools are required to develop and publish a plan outlining the intended direction that the school will take based on specific focus areas, titled strategic directions, for development over the next three years and beyond.

We would like to invite the school community to participate in this survey to evaluate the progress we have made over the last three years. Your valuable feedback will also be used to assist in the identification of our future strategic directions, the driving force behind our new school plan. These strategic directions will also formulate our school's “Vision Statement” which will be a reflection of our unique school context.

All of these components will be recorded on the first page of our new school plan. This will be available for your viewing, when complete. We welcome all ideas and look forward to your participation in this survey. All of your information and responses will remain anonymous.

YEAR 7/8 (2) TECHNOLOGY MANDATORY

For the past weeks these students have been learning basic

sewing techniques. The 7/8 (2) class have made some very

colourful beanies, they designed the applique work to sew on

the outside and were able to choose their own colours and

designs. Well done to this class for the mature way they

approached the topic and I was impressed in the teamwork

when someone needed help in class time.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL NEWS

“National Bandanna Day” National Bandanna Day 2014 will be held on

Friday 31 October 2014 and this year the SRC are

asking you to join the fight against cancer.

Every year, another 23,000 young people have to

deal with the challenge of cancer - whether it's their

own diagnosis or that of their parent, brother or

sister.

Young people at CanTeen wear bandannas to show

they're fighting cancer together. Join the fight this

National Bandanna Day and raise funds to help

CanTeen support young people when cancer turns

their world upside down.

The bandanna has become iconic to CanTeen and it is now recognized as a symbol of support for young people living with cancer. The SRC will be selling the following merchandise items at recess and lunch time:

Bandannas $4.00 Pens $3.00

So please support this worthy cause on Friday 31 October 2014

SRC Halloween Dress up

To celebrate Halloween this year, the SRC will be holding a

dress up day. Come to school dressed as your favourite

Halloween character. Students who wear mufti will need to

bring in a gold coin donation. All the donations will be going

towards the SRC account. There is a ‘spooky’ prize for the best

dressed from Primary and Secondary.

BTS Clean & Green’ Winners On behalf of the SRC, we would like to thank all of the participants who entered the ‘BTS Clean &

Green’ competition. All of the posters were creative, positive and highlighted the importance of

keeping our school clean and green. Congratulations to Taonga Ranginui,

Year 4 and Dakota Armitstead-Hansen, Year 10 for winning this competition.

They will receive a $20.00 voucher from the school canteen and a special certificate in the next

Principal’s Assembly.

How2Learn Report: Resilience

Being resilient in a situation is not something that you’re either born with or not. You learn and

absorb new meanings, perspectives and attitudes to gain better thinking, self-management skills

and more knowledge. Look at the different images below and see how being rapt in the flow of

learning (absorption) is one way we all demonstrate: Resilience.

ABOVE: Can you find the seven horses? This image was used as the CD cover for the album

"Horses & High Heels" by Marianne Faithfull.

BELOW: How many animals can you find?
