NAPLAN- Parents of children in Years 3, 5 7 and 9 were issued their students results in the

mail this week. NAPLAN results are just one measuring tool for student performance. The

feedback in these reports provide a valuable insight into how your child is performing and

can be measured against previous NAPLAN results for those students in Year 5 and above.

We further encourage parents to discuss these results with teachers and Year Advisers to

promote continual educational growth for their child. Parents may have heard that our school

was identified in associated radio reports last week, acknowledging the notable

achievements of our students in NAPLAN results.

As mentioned, the NAPLAN results are only one measuring tool for student performance.

This week at Batlow Technology School, Mrs O’Loughlan lead a team of primary and

secondary staff to analyse every student’s literacy ability. Over three days, the team looked

at various individual work samples from all students from Year 4 through to Year 10. This

scrutiny of student’s literacy abilities will be conducted every Semester. The specific

information gained for every student will allow for greater differentiation of learning

strategies. Teachers will be better informed of the required areas of improvement for each

individual student and provide appropriate instruction.

After reviewing our management of the Literacy Continuum, Batlow Technology School staff

will commence the inclusion of a Numeracy Continuum. Staff have already indicated their

willingness to be included in this upcoming student assessment tool. Parents should feel

confident that the teachers of Batlow Technology School are and remain committed to

enhancing student achievement.

Mrs Finnimore led a novel Science challenge for Education Week. All students were

provided the opportunity to investigate, plan and construct a paper plane to enter into a

regional challenge. A stringent selection process was undertaken with the finalist having to

perform their task whilst results were videoed for verification. Several students performed

commendably at the regional level with Christopher Wilesmith absolutely dominating the

secondary category. His plane flew over 30 metres. This was no fluke as one of Chris’s

earlier models had flown even further in a trial run. Chris even requested that Mr McDonell

keep the prototype under lock and key until the finals.

The Breakfast Club which has been a focus in recent months has received an unexpected

boost from Mr Bill Boydell. Mr Boydell is known to many as the ‘milko’ for our school. After

explaining our situation to Mr Boydell, he went away and was successful in gaining further

support for Batlow Technology School students through his employers agreeing to supply

fresh milk for the BTS Breakfast Club. This contribution is most welcome and further

demonstrates the collective power we have when we all pull together. Thanks Bill.

Miss Sally McRorie has vigorously been revealing a thorough Kindergarten Transition

program for new students in 2016. Her intentions are to provide a seamless transition to

Batlow Technology School for all Kindergaten students. Miss McRorie understands the

anxieties that exist for new students (and parents). To ensure parents do not miss these

transition opportunities, a detailed pamphlet will be provided to all 2016 Kindergarten

families. Further copies will be available at the front office.

The P&C is meeting on Tuesday evening at 6.30 pm. We have many exciting initiatives

underway around Batlow Technology School. New faces are always welcome.

PAPER PLANES – WE WERE UP FOR THE CHALLENGE

As part of National Science Week this year Batlow Technology

School held a whole school Young Scientist Paper Plane

Challenge in our school hall and under our COLA.

To qualify Kindergarten to Year 6 needed to throw further than

12m and Year 7-12 had to throw further than 20m to be eligible.

All students from Kindergarten to Year 12 had two attempts to

make the distance. Those that made the distance had their

throws videoed and uploaded to the 2015 Young Scientist Paper

Plane Challenge website to be eligible for the Regional High

Flyers Competition. School events and individual qualifying throws must be

conducted following clear rules. These rules are a modification of the Red Bull Paper

Wings International Rules.

We are extremely proud of the Batlow students with the following result:

Christopher Wilesmith (Year 9) threw a distance of 31.06 m and was placed first in

the NSW regional challenge. Ryley Collins (Year 7) placed third with a throw of 22m.

In the Primary section Timothy Gardner (Year 4) threw a distance of 26.68m and

placed second and Trevor Ashcroft-Hanson (Year 6) also placed well with a throw of

12.10m

In the Regional High Flyers Competition, the winner, their school and the second

placegetter will win great ‘Fischertechnik Kits’, some of these kits are valued close to

$200!

In 2015, National Science Week events were held right throughout Australia - from a

crocodile dissection in Darwin down to an exhibition of breathtaking photographs of

Aurora Australis in Tasmania - with everything from science festivals, music and

comedy shows, expert panel discussions, interactive hands-on displays, open days,

and online activities.

National Science Week 2015 ran from 15-23 August. Event details can be found at

www.scienceweek.net.au.

UNIVERSITY / WAGGA WAGGA TAFE VISIT

On Friday 21 August 2015, fifteen Year 10 students travelled to Wagga to attend the

‘Taste of TAFE’ and Charles Sturt University (CSU) and Primary Industries TAFE

campus tours. Six students were enrolled in TAFE courses throughout the day, which

consisted of: hair and beauty; mechatronics and electro-technology. These are just

some of the courses provided by TAFE for TVET subject choices next year.

All the students had a very busy, yet productive day and experienced first-hand what

it would be like in these educational learning pathways and environments.

Congratulations to Year 10 on their wonderful behaviour and a great day.

SRC FOOTY COLOURS DAY

Friday 4 September 2015

Cancer doesn’t discriminate; it affects Australians of all ages and from all walks of

life. This year thousands of Aussies will unite in the fight against cancer by wearing

their favourite football or sports team colours to school and raise awareness for Fight

Cancer Foundation to fund vital care, treatment methods and cures for young

children living with cancer.

Students wear your footy guernsey to school and bring a cold coin donation.

Support the SRC in raising money for cancer awareness.

FRIDAY IS NOT A NON – UNIFORM DAY
