Eddington programmatic status
• Fully approved by SPC as part of ESA’s science program as project (“reserve status” dropped) in May 2002.
• Single project w/ Herschel and Planck:– Herschel platform reuse– Integrated project team
• Launch 2007/2008– Flexibility in launch date depending on P/L availability– Extremely tight development schedule requires fast P/L procurement

P/L procurement approach
• Integrated approach to P/L (telescope + camera)• Joint procurements, ESA + PI contribution• Define PI-procured items now
Presentation EddiCam consortium, FF, Madrid 13/06/2002
Next steps
• Prepare Science Management Plan (SMP)• SMP describes the implementation of the mission
– Must define PI responsibilities, data rights, etc.– Pre-requisite for an AO
• Define PI-procured items now

Eddington P/L definition• Eddington P/L current baseline (Astrium study) comprises 4
(identical) telescopes• Each telescope includes
• Optical assembly (OA)
• Optical bench (OB)
• Focal plane assembly (FPA)
• Front-end electronics (FEE)
• Data processing unit (DPU)
• Complete P/L to be procured by ESA+PI+Industry team• Industrial components will be procured through open ITT• PI components to be procured through AO

The Telescope
• Innovative approach, split aperture• 4 x folded Schmidt cameras, 60 cm aperture• Optical design: Collecting area + Field of view.
– 6º FOV, planar, unvignetted, and fully corrected.– Symmetric PSF– 1.5 x 106 photo-electrons/s for V = 11
• Mirrors– SiC.– Coating with flat spectral response 400-900 nm.

EddiCam
• A single focal plane instrument:– Array of 8 CCDs covering the 6º FOV ( 12 cm).– Frame-store operation
• CCD detectors: 20 x 80 mm in size– 740 x 2900, 27 (1.5 arcsec), pixels.– Full-well capacity: 1.6 x 106 e-/pix. – Operation at -90o (passive cooling) in L2 orbit.

Eddington definition: further steps
• ESA project team to be formed soon• No detailed schedule, etc. available prior to
establishment of formal project team. But:– SMP to be submitted to AWG on Oct. 1, 2002– Definition phase (A+B1) to be completed by 1Q 2003 to
allow start of phase C/D in 2004– Option for (cheap) copy of Herschel bus expires in July
2003
• Define PI contributions now

Eddington possible PI contributions
• PI contributions must be realistic– Financially (compatible w/ available national funds)– Technologically (compatible w/ available facilities,
expertise in national labs)– Schedule-wise (must not risk impacting project schedule –
specially important given special Eddington status)
• Today’s discussion beginning of this project• AO (and SIP) will be written keeping into account
today’s discussion

Eddington possible PI contributions (1)
• Support to ESA– Support in requirement definition and optimization
• During ITT preparation, for P/L studies and implementation• During industrial contract execution
– Support in system definition– Support in design definition
• Both at the scientific as well as at the technical level
Presentation EddiCam consortium, FF, Madrid 13/06/2002
Eddington possible PI contributions (2)
• Scientific characterization of CCDs– Development of Eddington CCD test-bed facility– Screening of industrially procured chips for EM, QM, FM’s
and FS– Scientific characterization of representative CCD’s for
Eddington FPA in relevant configuration, environment– Radiation testing and analysis of relevant chip(s)– Long-term performance characterization of relevant chip(s)– Support to FPA characterization, calibration at industrial site– Filter, grism characterization (if any)
Presentation EddiCam consortium, FF, Madrid 13/06/2002
Eddington possible PI contributions (3)
• Support to industry– Support in the analysis of telescope test and calibration data– Science support for the design and test of the mirror

FM, FS)– Scientific analysis of all calibration data– Provision of relevant calibration data and information to ESA– Provision of optical calibration test facility (major task, could
e.g. use Liege facility)
Presentation EddiCam consortium, FF, Madrid 13/06/2002
