HIP RAFTER LAYOUT
2
Hip Rafter Layout Lines
• There are many layout lines on a hip rafter.
3
Hip Rafter Layout Lines
• These lines are added one line at a time.
4
Hip Layout for Ridge
• Draw ridge plumb line.
• This is not the cut line.
5
Hip Layout for Ridge
• Rafter must be shortened for the ridge.
• Shortening = ½ the diagonal thickness of ridge.
• Draw a square line on the top with a center mark.
Usually 1 1/16″
6
Hip Layout for Ridge
• Side cuts are added for fit.
Usually
3/4″
• Side cut = ½ the thickness of hip.
• Draw angled line over the top.
• Red lines are the cut lines.
Usually 1 1/16″
7
Hip Rafter Length
• Unit Length x Run = Rafter Length
8
Hip Rafter Length
• If the building span is 24′, then the run is _____.12
18″
12 units of run x 18″ = 216″
• If the unit rise is 6″, the hip unit length is ______.
• The hip rafter line length is …
9
Hip Rafter Length
• Rafter Length = 216″
• Measured from first ridge plumb line.
10
Bird’s Mouth Layout
• Draw heel plumb line.
• Measure down equal to common rafter bird’s mouth height.
• Draw seat cut line.
216″
11
Bird’s Mouth Layout
• Measure back along seat line ½ hip thickness.
Usually 3/4″
• Measure down plumb to the bottom edge of rafter.
12
Bird’s Mouth Layout
• Measure back along seat line ½ hip thickness.
Usually 3/4″
Same
• Measure down plumb to the bottom edge of rafter.
• Raise seat line this distance.
• Red lines are cut lines.
13
Hip Tail Layout
• Either measure the run
• Or measure the length
• Measure down the plumb line same as the common rafter
• Determine the location of hip fascia plumb line
• Square over the top with a center mark
• Draw level line
14
Hip Tail Layout
Usually 3/4″
• Raise level line same as bird’s mouth seat line.
• Measure back from plumb line ½ hip thickness.
• Draw angled lines on top.
• Red lines are cut lines.
Usually 3/4″

Conclusion
• Hip layout lines are added one at a time.
