-phasia

-phasia means “speech”– Aphasia literally means “lack of speech”

Aphasia is caused by an injury to the brain’s speech/language areas

– Broca’s Aphasia leaves the patient unable to speak coherently but still able to understand language

– Wernicke’s Aphasia leaves the patient unable to understand spoken language and the patient mixes up word order

– Global Aphasia is the result of major brain damage. Both Broca's and Wernicke’s language areas are damaged. Patients with global aphasia are unable to understand spoken language, or to speak.

-paresis

-paresis means weakness or partial paralysis– Paraparesis is weakness or partial

paralysis in the lower limbs. Familial Spastic Paraparesis is a group of

genetic disorders that are characterized by progressive weakness and stiffness of the legs
