Originally a monastery, the four-story building was attacked with such frequency in the sixteenth century by Saracen pirates that the monks abandoned it to the sheep that roamed the coastal hills. In the 19th century, Baron Baratta revived the wrek, converting it into a family summer house, then transformed in 1901 by Mr Ruggero Valentini, the pioneer of tourism in Portofino, into the Grand Hotel Splendid.

Since the beginning the hotel has played host to the most famous and noble families in Europe and the cream of the international jet-set, with the first person to sign the visitors’ book being the Duke of Windsor.

In 1985 Orient-Express Hotels bought the hotel and started a pluriennal project of renovation. All rooms and suites have since been completely redecorated and refurbished, the Beauty and Wellness Centre was added and the restaurant and bar repositioned on the border of the terrace.

Splendido Mare

The building that today hosts the Splendido Mare was built together with the rest of the village by the indigenous people of the Ligurians, before Roman times. In fact, Portofino was already a fishing village when the roman historian, Plinius, visited the cluster of houses called “Portus Delphini”. He probably named it this way for the dolphin-shape of the peninsula, or the fact that the surrounding sea is frequented by dolphins.

The building was the first and only “osteria” in Portofino in the first years of 1900, where visitors could find delicious sea food and a clean bed. In 1997 Orient-Express Hotels acquired the property and started a massive restructuring and renovation project, completing the 16 rooms and suites hotel with incredible views on the Piazzetta and the waterfront and the roofs of Portofino. The hotel was completed with the Chuflay Bar and Restaurant, where you can still find delicious sea food under a starry night.

Courtesy Shuttle BusA regular scheduled shuttle service is available between Hotel Splendido and Splendido Mare, unless you wish to take a leisurely ten-minute walk. The shuttle bus comfortably accommodates 7 guests and operates as follows:Shuttle service from Hotel Splendido:  From 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to midnight, every 15 minutes (at 00, 15, 30 and 45 minutes past each hour).

From 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, every 20 minutes (at 00, 20 and 40 minutes past each hour).

Shuttle service from Portofino:  From 9:05 am to 1:05 pm and from 4:05 pm to 00:05 am, every 15 minutes (at 5, 20, 35 and 50 minutes past each hour).

From 1:05 pm to 4:05 pm, every 20 minutes (at 5, 25 and 45 minutes past each hour).

Please note that a more limited service operates in early Spring and late Autumn.
