Summer 2022 TODDLER TUESDAYS Tuesdays, June 7 th -July 26 th at 10 and 11 a.m. Toddle on over for a terrific Tuesday. Stories, songs, rhymes and more comprise this thirty-minute early literacy class. An activity will follow each class and relate to the theme of the day. For 2-3 year olds with a caregiver. Register beginning June 1 st for all 8 weeks of summer classes. MOTHER GOOSE ON THE LOOSE Wednesdays, June 8 th -July 27 th at 10 and 11 a.m. This nationally-acclaimed early literacy program will build reading readiness skills through stories, music, movement, and more. Don’t miss this ever-popular class that promises fun for you and your little one. For 0-3 year olds with a caregiver. Register beginning June 1 st for all 8 weeks of summer classes. BABY JAM Thursdays, June 9 th -July 28 th at 10 and 11 a.m. Join us for songs, rhymes, knee bounces, and more in this 30-minute early literacy class that will benefit both you and your child. Bonding time with your baby is priceless! Spend time together, and with other families, in this fun class that will be followed by free playtime. For ages 0-2 with a caregiver. FAMILY PAJAMA STORYTIME Mondays, June 13 th , July 11 th , and August 8 th at 6:30 p.m. Wear your favorite pair of pjs and slippers and come on out to listen to some great stories that tie in with this year’s Summer Learning theme. This evening storytime provides fun for the whole family and includes a craft activity afterwards. For all ages. Register on the first of each month. OCEAN IN MOTION Monday, June 13 th at 10 a.m. How do sea creatures travel in the water? Come find out! Fun activities will get you moving like our ocean animal friends. Can you walk like a crab? Waddle like a penguin? We can’t wait to watch you prove it! For 4-6 year olds. Register beginning June 1 st . GIGGLE AND WIGGLE Monday, June 20 th at 10 a.m. All of our favorite songs about the sea come together in one class of music, movement, and madness. Come get silly with us! FEELING CRABBY Tuesday, July 12 th at 6 p.m. Identifying their own emotions and the emotions of others is an important developmental step for young children. Join us for an entertaining program consisting of emotional stories, games, and a craft. For ages 3-6 with a caregiver. Register beginning July 1 st . SHARKS! Monday, July 18 th at 10 a.m. Learn about the fascinating world of sharks with stories, songs, and a craft. For ages 3-6 with a caregiver. Register beginning July 1 st . BIRTH-PRESCHOOL SECRET MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE Friday, July 15 th at 1 p.m. Join us for a reading of The Uncorker of Ocean Bottles by Michelle Cuevas and then stay to compose your very own secret message in a bottle that others will attempt to decipher. For grades 4-6. Register beginning July 1 st . CAPTAIN’S LOG Tuesday, June 21 st at 1 p.m. Join us in creating a captain’s log while learning the skills of book binding and journaling. For grades 5 and 6. Register beginning June 1 st . SEA TURTLES, SAVE TURTLES Wednesday, July 27 th at 1:30 p.m. The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Second Chance program is helping sea turtles in a big way. Join us as we learn about some of the challenges sea turtles are facing, and why it’s so important to work towards saving them. Whether you’re on a beach, or miles away from the ocean, you can do your part in helping these beautiful creatures. If we all pitch in, imagine the ocean of possibilities! While the Zoo cannot bring a sea turtle to visit, they will bring a land turtle named Sassafrass! Don’t miss this special opportunity! For grades K-6. Register beginning July 1 st . I SURVIVED BOOK CLUB Monday, June 6th, and Tuesdays, July 5th, and August 9th at 6:30 p.m. If you like natural disasters and historical events, this is the book club for you! Each month we’ll discuss one of the books from the popular series written by Lauren Tarshis and then do an activity that goes along with it. Don’t forget to pick up a copy of the book at the Children’s Desk and read it prior to attending class. For grades 2-4. Register on the first of each month. OPEN ART STUDIO Wednesdays, June 8th, July 6th, and August 3rd at 6 p.m. Bring your imagination and use our art supplies to create whatever you wish. To tie into this year's theme, however, ideas will be given for coral reef sculptures and more. The choice will still be yours since open art time truly does allow for an Ocean of Possibilities! Come create with us and have fun! For grades K-6. Register on the first of each month. LEGO MOSAIC SEA CREATURES Thursday, June 9th at 1 p.m. Come build LEGO “pictures” of sea creatures. Use one of the patterns provided or design one of your own! For grades K-4. Register beginning June 1st. OCEAN GLOW YOGA STORYTIME Thursday, June 9th at 6:30 p.m. Move like a jellyfish, breathe like a whale! We’ll read a story and learn some water-inspired yoga poses together. Did you know that some ocean animals glow underwater? We can glow too! Be sure to wear white or neon colors and we’ll do yoga under black lights. Please bring a yoga mat or large towel. For grades K-3. Register beginning June 1st.

AQUATIC CREATURES Friday, June 10th at 1:00 p.m. We know many of the types of animals that live in the ocean, from sharks to dolphins to whales. But what kinds of creatures live in the streams, creeks, and rivers around us, right here in Pittsburgh? Discover the animals that call our waterways home and how they help contribute to a healthy environment. For grades K-4. Register beginning June 1st. THE SCIENCE OF SUBMARINES Saturday, June 11th at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Submarines are fascinating vehicles! And the science behind their ability to dive and surface is fascinating too. Join us for a hands-on program all about subs. For grades 4-6. Register beginning June 1st. SINK OR FLOAT? Thursday, June 16th at 6:30 p.m. What makes a boat float? What makes a rock sink? We’ll explore buoyancy with a story and some fun experiments, and then we will test our boat building skills! For grades 2-4. Register beginning June 1st. MOLLY OF DENALI AND THE SEA HOP CHALLENGE Friday, June 17th at 1 p.m. Molly of Denali is a popular PBS Kids show that stars Molly, an Alaskan Native who loves to learn and explore. In this class, we will watch an episode of the show and then participate in Native Games from around the Circumpolar North, including the Sea Hop Challenge! We will also learn a few Alaskan dances. So fitness and fun abound in this energetic and educational class. For grades K-2. Register beginning June 1st.

NARWHALS: UNICORNS OF THE SEA Tuesday, June 21st at 6:30 p.m. Join us for a “nar-ly” program all about everyone’s favorite arctic sea creature. The program will consist of stories, games, cool facts, and a craft. For grades 2-4. Register beginning June 1st.

ART BOX Saturday, June 18th at 1 p.m. It’s time to create! What will we pull from the Art Box today? Think oceans. Wear your messy clothes or bring an apron/smock and be ready to make a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork to take home! For grades K-4. Register beginning June 1st.

WHAT’S COOKIN’? Wednesday June 15th and July 13th at 2 p.m. Calling all little cooks who also love books! Listen to a beach or ocean-themed story and then make a delicious recipe to go along with it! Crab croissants anyone? For grades K-4. Register on the first of each month. GO FISH CARD CLUB Mondays, June 20th, July 18th, and August 15th at 3 p.m. Come hang out with friends and play the classic card game Go Fish. Other card games will be taught and played too. DIY AQUARIUM Saturday July 9th at 1 p.m. Do you want a pet fish, but your mom says “NO!?” Bring in an empty cereal box to create your very own aquarium. You can create your own aquatic animal to live inside. For grades 2-4. Register beginning June 1st. BUILDING FOR HURRICANES Wednesday, July 6th at 1 p.m. High winds and heavy rains…can you design a structure that could withstand a hurricane? Come and try this engineering challenge! For grades 4-6. Register beginning July 1st. SONG FOR A WHALE BOOK CLUB Thursdays July 7th-28th at 6:30 p.m. Song for a Whale is a terrific novel based on a real whale. The “world’s loneliest whale” sings at an unusual frequency of 52 Hz that can’t be heard by other whales. Author Lynne Kelly heard of this whale, paired it with her knowledge of sign language through her career as an interpreter, and this magical story was created. Join us as we discuss this amazing book while doing a different activity each week., For grades 3 and 4. Register beginning July 1st and pick up your copy of the book at the Children’s Desk. OUTRAGEOUS OCEAN ART Saturday, July 16th at 11 a.m. Dress for a mess. We will create art using a variety of objects. You never know what you might be working with…a fly swatter, squirt bottle, or bubble wrap! For grades 1 and 2. Register beginning July 1st.
