8 to 15 My house sits on the edge of town facing east. On a clear day I am treated to a breathtaking view of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Unfortunately, clear days can be few and far between. In the summertime haze or smoke blocks my view—making the mountains nothing more than an abstraction; in the winter, it’s often the fog. Mission of Selma First Baptist Church: “To help make disciples of Jesus Christ, who love God and love others in our community, region, and world.”

I need to make a confession: a fog of

abstraction has obstructed my vision for Selma First Baptist Church. I knew my vision

was from God; but there was a fog or haze that was preventing us from seeing it

concretely.

My vision was that every church member has a “missionary mindset”—seeing

themselves as “missionaries” for Jesus Christ in whatever context God places them. As

such, I see our church as a “missionary training center” where the family of God

joyfully comes to be prepared to fulfill the

Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). While in Cuba this past fall, I realized that

the “missing piece” of this vision was my failure to define “whatever context” for our

people. This missing piece was casting a haze

or a fog over the vision making the whole missionary mindset nothing more than an

abstract idea. It turns out, “whatever context” has been

given to each of us from God. He makes each of us his missionary and places each of us in a

unique mission field.

Our primary mission field is the 8 to 15 people that are closest to us: the people God

has placed in our life and uniquely equipped us to reach.

Focusing our efforts on preparing our

people to reach their 8 to 15-person mission field works. I’ve seen it work in China. I’ve

seen it work in Cuba. I’ve seen it work in California. In Cuba I talked with a pastor who

grew a church from nothing to over 500

people by equipping the Christians to reach their family, friends, neighbors, and co-

workers. It turns out that the maximum people the Cuban government will allow to

meet in any household is 15 people. In China, the political climate demands that Christians

meet in homes or apartments. Not

surprisingly, the average “church” consists of 8 to 15 people.

As Tom Mercer, pastor of High Desert Church in Victorville, CA puts it: “it isn’t

persecution that generates growth, it’s the

ministry model that political oppression actually forces us to embrace.”[1]

While we tend to think of evangelism as sharing our faith with strangers, it turns out

that 95% of people who come to faith, do so primarily through the influence of somebody

within their 8 to 15-person sphere of

influence. Take a moment and think about the people

God has placed in your life. Make a list of these people and start praying for them every

day. Look for opportunities

to invite them to church and come to church

yourself so you can grow in your faith—making you

a more effective

missionary. According to a survey by Dr. Thom

Reiner: “96% of the un-churched are at least somewhat likely to attend church if they are

invited. Sadly, only 2% of churchgoers have ever made that invitation.”

My prayer is that this 8 to 15-person

mission field will become part of our church’s DNA. This stuff will change the world! Imagine

what would happen if each person in your 8 to 15-person mission field adopted a missionary

mindset.

When I first started as pastor of SFBC, I proposed the following example:

“Suppose one person mentors two non-replicating individuals in each six-month

period, after one year there will be only five disciples. If that same person mentors two

replicating individuals in each six-month

period, with the goal of reproducing their lives in others, exponential growth starts to occur.

If after six months, those three disciples each select two others to disciple, after one year,

nine disciples will have been made. If during

the next six months, those nine disciples each select two people, 27 disciples will have been

made. If this model continued, in about 17 years, everyone in the world would be

evangelized and discipled!”

I can’t wait to see this mindset take off. I’m frustrated that it took so long to define the

mission field, but I also take comfort in God’s timing: wondering if perhaps God allowed this

fog in order to force us to look inward before we could look outward. Perhaps we needed

the time to see ourselves as missionaries

before we could even think about a mission field. As we consider why God would choose

to save us and why He would place us in the midst of 8 to 15 people who need Him, let us

remember the words from the Apostle Peter:

“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to

everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with

gentleness and respect…” (1 Peter3:15).

From Pastor Greg

Happy New Year Wow, 2016 is here!! Time seems to zip by so fast now. I guess that comes with age. When we were young, let’s say 10, the year seemed to take forever to pass. Now that we’re older it goes by fast. I have a theory on that. When we were 10 one year would take 10% of our entire life to pass. Now it’s a little over 1% of our lives. So I guess it’s only natural it’s this way. What will it be like when we’re in Heaven and time will be measured so differently? I think that’s another reason we think our lives have gone by so fast. We look at it through the eternal eyes of our hearts that has eternity placed in them. 2016 will be bringing the one constant with it. The one thing that is constant is change. I think the biggest change will be we will be announcing our ministries and activities via church text messages or email. I’ve been asking for your cell numbers so you will be able to receive these messages. A new request: Please let me know if you don’t have a cell phone that has texting capabilities or an email address that you look at. We will be looking into ways to reach you so you don’t miss out on events and activities. Please call me, 559-779-7596, to let me know you don’t have text messaging or email available to you. Due to calendar conflicts (Otto Bach’s birthday party,) we will be having our annual Joke Night and Potluck on Friday January 15th. So bring something good to eat and a good joke to share. I believe that Mary Davidson stole the show last year with her “You know you’re old when . . .” I’m looking forward to a great year. We hope to find ways the senior community at First Baptist can minister to the entire body. It should really be a good year.

Start the new year off right with Wednesday Night Live!

Join us on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm for dinner and stay for Bible Classes at 6:30 pm. There is something for everyone. For adults we will be offering Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University class. Kristi Pankratz

will be leading this group in the Family Room. Girlfriend Group will also continue meeting in the Fireside Room. If you are hungering for some girlfriend time that focuses on God and His will for your life, this is the place for you. They meet in the Fireside Room. CSB and GEMS for school-age boys and girls meet in the Fellowship Hall. We also offer a quality Nursery

and Toddler program in rooms 5,6 & 7. Pastor Luke Chow and Danay Niles lead our fantastic Student Ministry over in the Youth House, so come, bring your kids and grow deeper in your faith this winter.

Annual Business Meeting

As a congregational church we meet once a year for our annual business meeting where the Servant Board and Pastors share the budget, vision and direction of our church. Everyone is encouraged to attend and members are encouraged to vote on new members, the 2016 budget and new Servant Board members. The annual report will be available on Sunday, January 17th and

the business meeting will take place on Sunday, January 31st after church. We will hold a potluck for lunch. Last names beginning with A-P bring a main dish, Q-Z bring a salad and everyone bring a dessert.

New Member Class & Baptism Sunday

Pastor Seth will be holding a Membership Class on January 17th right after church in the Family Room. If you are ready to “Dive In” and make Selma First Baptist Church your “home” or just learn more about our church, then join us. Please call the church

office and let us know you would like to come. 896-5842 January 17th is also Baptism Sunday. If you would like to be baptized, please see Pastor Seth, Pastor Luke or Pastor Greg.

Missions

Dorcas’ Missions will be holding White Cross Work Day on January 30th from 10:00am-1:00pm. Snacks and drinks will be provided. We will again be making rolled bandages for the Congo so bring sewing scissors, a portable sewing machine and

gently used flat sheets. No sewing experience needed to help out. See you there! CALLING ALL BAKERS!

Our annual “Sweets for your Sweeties” mission donation gala is coming soon. Bring your baked goods, homemade candies, etc. on Sunday, February 14th by 9:30am to the tables under the balcony. Pick out your treats and donate generously to our mission

projects. This year’s projects are: Congo-Pastor’s wives educational support and First Crow Indian Baptist Church-Continued flood relief efforts.

Online Giving

Online giving has arrived at Selma First Baptist! You may set up your electronic giving via the church website or use the QR code on your electronic device. It is easy to set up and you may make one-time gifts or set-up a recurring tithe. If you prefer

envelopes, there are boxes available in the back of the sanctuary and individual envelopes in the pews. Thank you so much for your faithful hearts and joyful giving to our many ministries.

Hi Church Family! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone! It’s hard to believe how quickly 2015 blew by! I hope that in the midst of this crazy holiday season, you were able to stop for a moment, take a breath, and reflect on the goodness and faithfulness of our Heavenly Father, who sacrificially spared no expense for us. The Turkeybowl in November was a ton of fun! This year, along with the traditional turkeys we typically use as game-balls, we added a few cabbages in the competition! It was a mess, as usual, but a glorious one. A few pictures from the event are below. On Wednesday, our junior high students will be having their annual Christmas Party while our high school students will be having their annual Post-Finals Lock-In on Friday! God has blessed us tremendously in 2015, so we are looking forward to celebrating together!

12/15/15 When youth group resumes on January 13, we will be starting a new series entitled New Beginnings. We are going to be restating and re-imagining the purpose and vision of the student ministry with them. Our hope for 2016 is that our students will be empowered and galvanized to walk out the calling God has placed in each of their lives! Also, our high school students and junior high students are going to be heading up to Winter Camp at Hume Lake soon! The high school group will be going the weekend of January 22-24 while the junior high will be going February 19-21. Please pray for our students and for Hume as we prepare to go on another adventure! Thanks again, so much, for an amazing year of ministry. We anxiously look forward to what God has planned for us this coming year!!

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

LED BY DELFINA VAZQUEZ: CHILDREN’S MINISTRY COORDINATOR

WNL Begins January 13th, 2016

Our CSB program is getting better every semester! Our leadership team grew this year, including myself there were 5 men who were there every week to pour our collective wisdom, life experience and love into those boys. We had about 16 boys on a weekly basis, primarily from our congregation but there were a few who do not attend our church. We would love to see that number grow, especially to those outside our church. To help with that effort, we constantly remind our boys to invite their friends and others who may be interested in doing this type of program. I would even like to do some form of advertising campaign to the community perhaps at the local schools or even to other churches who don’t have a similar program.

What we continually tell the boys is that we are teaching them to become Godly men. Men have a very specific role in God’s plan and we want them to know how to be a Godly man so that they can fulfill their part in that role. This semester we put additional emphasis on not just being a man, but a gentleman. There is an added element or component to gentlemanly behavior and it should absolutely complement all of the manly characteristics. We try to instill this behavior in them in a variety of ways. First of all we want and expect them to memorize scripture. This semester’s passage was the 23rd Psalm. To help them memorize it, we spent a little time on it each week reciting it and breaking it down for them into chunks. We also had them draw pictures that followed the passage so that they could visualize the verses in their heads. As some of the older kids got the passage memorized, we charged them with helping the younger boys memorize the scripture. The older boys got some leadership and teaching experience, the younger boys got individual time and help, and everyone came out better for it. We rewarded the boys who were able to recite the scripture with a Shepherd’s rod. We are proud to say that 10 out of our 16 boys earned the Shepherd’s rod. Arlie Rogers

CSB has so many positive things going on please look for the full report in the annual report for Children’s Ministry.

Men, we need your help! A request from our CSB leaders: One area where we would like some help from the congregation is to find a couple of mentors who would be interested in just meeting with a boy for a couple of minutes perhaps right before or after church on Sundays to check in with them and make sure they are doing their lessons and trying to behave like Godly gentlemen. If you could provide any assistance please contact Arlie Rogers.

Our GEMS program for WNL is lead by Amber Oakley. She is doing a great job working with the girls memorizing scripture, and working with arts and crafts.

GEMS is looking for additional support as well. Amber could use some help preparing for the next session in January. We need ladies/mentors to also work with the girls and provide help with activities. Please contact Amber Oakley if you feel God’s call to this great ministry.

We had a great time in our Celebration party. Thank you to all the teachers who joined us and helped make it lots of fun. Our kids are doing a great job learning about the book of Genesis. Kids made their own pizza and goo, played games and had fun.

Five children accepted Jesus into their lives! Glory to God! Every time a child makes a decision to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, all the angels in heaven rejoice. Congratulations to Alex, Aaron & Adam Ornelas, Andrew Pankratz, and Jude Alonzo!

Luke 15:10 “Likewise I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents.”

We are all looking forward to working with the kids in the new year. We will continue our Back to the Basic’s lessons in the Bible during Children’s Church and are currently focused on Abraham. In the new year we will also learn new ways to become mission focused, pray for others and spread the Gospel. On Sunday, Jan 3rd we will be presenting our kids with a certificate of achievement for the completion of Genesis 1-21. The certificate will be presented to our kids in big church and parents are invited to join us for lunch after church where the kids will have a small presentation for parents.

CHURCH FAMILY

CELEBRATIONS

Prayer Chain:

If you would like to be included on our church e-mail prayer chain, please email the office and let Carrie know. Her email is [email protected]. The quickest way to get a prayer request on the chain is to go to the church website http://selmafirstbaptist.org/#/contact-us and click “prayer requests” and fill out the form. We are immediately notified and send the request out as soon as possible. You may also call and submit a prayer request over the phone at 896-5842.

Secret Sister Revealing

Secret Sister Time! All women are invited to be part of our Secret Sister group. You will really enjoy praying for another woman specifically during the year, and will be encouraged to know that another woman is praying for you. You can also send her cards on her birthday or other special occasions and we really look forward to January when we get together, have some cookies and find the “Sister” who has been praying for us all year and draw a new name to pray for in 2016! Please join us on Sunday, January 10th at 2:00pm in the Fireside Room. If you can’t make it to our party but would still like to have and be a Secret Sister, sign up forms will be on the table at the back of the sanctuary near the Family Room door. Fill one out and leave it in the basket. Your name will be drawn and a Sister’s name will be mailed to you. We look forward to another wonderful year of praying for one another.

As we celebrate the end of 2015 and the

beginning of a new year, I would like to publicly thank my Secret Sister for praying for me this past year. I don’t know who you are yet, but I want you to know how very much your prayers have meant to me. I’ve had a very challenging year, and it has been a huge comfort to know you were praying. This was my first year as a Secret Sister, and I want to encourage the other women of the church to join Secret Sisters for 2016 if you haven’t in the past. It is awesome to know someone is in your corner, praying on your behalf! Cathy Christensen
