    ! Sam

! Greats like James Baldwin have paved the way for social justice through creative means

!  As a homosexual, african american in the 60s you can image the experiences the Baldwin had

! he was social critic, poet and much more

! He utilized writing to create his stamp leaving a lasting impression on the social justice movement

! His actions echoed in people like Emory Douglas

! The visual creative behind the black panther party

! last year he as recognized as an AIGA medalist

! fast forward 55 years from Baldwin still have some of the same problems

! How in this new age can we make a di#erence for the still standing issues revolving around civil rights and social justice?

! There is so much evolving technology and unlimited accessibility to our, ever so small attention span of this generation

! We more visual now than ever

! with this in mind Avery and I joined

! we knew that we wanted to make a lasting impact in the social rights movement, but struggled to find out how

    !  Avery

! We started with research in the Kansas City Area. I recalled a speech by Ms. Narene Stokes at a Fight for 15 Rally and shared my experience with Sam

! We became moved when viewing this narrative of Ms. Narene Stokes, her son was fallen victim to the Kansas City Police department. On July, 2013 in the Power and

light district his friend was accused of stealing a cell phone. After verbal confrontation and some shoving the police o$cers sprayed OC spray (essentially really strong

mace) to break up the dispute. After the crowd in the area dispersed Ryan’s friend was left su#ering from the spray and handed Ryan his keys. On his way to get his

friends car somehow Ryan got profiled as the theft. Seconds after being seen crossing the street from a dash cam he was shot and killed. The cops reported a false

narrative to the families saying that he was armed, when he was unarmed, sober, and holding his very own cell phone and his friends car keys. A FALSE narrative was

reported and left a negative image of who Ryan was. The lack of consistency in media coverage made us think twice about what really happened and forced us toinvestigate.

Utilizing DESIGN + FIBER ARTS, how can we create aconversation in the Kansas City community about social

injustices that are based on cultural assumptions?

    !  Avery

!  After asking many questions and getting in contact with Ms. Narene and her Lawyer Cyndy Short along with many other community members we came to a thought-

provoking question…(click) How can utilizing Design and Fiber Arts create a conversation in the Kansas City community about this social injustice based on a cultural

    assumption?

    CRAF·TI·VISM

a way of looking at life where voicing opinions through

creativity makes your voice stronger, your compassion

deeper & your quest for justice more innite.

    CRAFT + ACTIVISM

    ! Sam

! We came across an answer to this question in

! Betsy Greer; a crafter, activist, and “unsung hero”

! (click) known as the godmother of craftivism

! way of looking at life where voicing you opinions through creativity makes your voice stronger, your compassion deeper, and your quest for justice more infinite

    ! craft + activism

! that became our answer to help solving this issue in modern times

    RE·STOR·A·TIVE JUSTICE

nouna system of criminal justice that focuses on the

    rehabilitation of offenders through reconciliation

with victims and the community at large

    !  Avery

! TOGETHER We created Remembering Ryan, a public awareness campaign merging our worlds to start a conversation in Kansas City and to aid a bigger message

revolving around social justice. When speaking on diversity, Mellody Hobson, the CEO of Dreamworks Animations, said “the first step to action is awareness”

! That is where we wanted to start.

    ! Click

! To get there we had to learn about an action called Restorative Justice.. Which is a system of criminal justice that focuses on the rehabilitation of o#enders through

reconciliation with victims and the community at large. It seemed most fitting that we use this method to drive our idea into existence.

“Knowledge is experiential. What you get in social media or what you go

online to get is information. It’s not knowledge. We have to be careful to

    distinguish between the two.”

–quote from ZITA COBB a social entrepreneur

! (click)There is a use to information found online and we want to use technology in a “good way”

    ! to its fullest potential

! Our first touchpoint in this social awareness campaign was using Instagram to give information that can THEN lead into knowledge

! We used symbols based on Ryan’s life to tell a true narrative of who he was

! each post had a caption explaining the image; for instance this basketball represents the fact that Ryan gave up an opportunity to play at Pittsburg State because

his step-dad su#ered a stroke and he wanted to be with his mother

! the goal here was to create a sense of empathy and bring back to light the human qualities of Ryan and not the thug portrayal in the media

! His friends and family called him Fatback and that showed his sense of humor

! He also had hopes to take over the family dry cleaning business East of Troost.

! he met individuals like Augustine Burns (who wrote this note about Ryan) there and created a relationship with people no matter of age, race, or occupation

! Most people can relate and react to this visual information and the captioning is just enough digestible information

! From Instagram we want people to gain knowledge

    !

but as Ms. Cobbs says that is experiential which is why we had a direct link to a Facebook event that honors Ryan

! The Second touchpoint of the campaign involves events where people can gain knowledge about Ryan, We will talk more about this soon. Once people interact with

this page and learn more they can get excited to want to attend

    !  Avery

! The second step in our campaign involves 2 main touch-points, the first is engagement with Ryan’s church Community and second engagement with the kansas city

    public.

! Those two communities are our audience.

! There are those who are ready to take action and then those that want to learn more.

!  (click) At the community event we had a station of block prints that we designed with various symbols that align with those on the instagram and hold a similar

    purpose.

! We invited Ryan’s church community, family and others to print t-shirts. Participants spent time with these symbols (sam pass out stamps and shirt) while pressing the

stamps they read information on the back and gained more insight of the larger image of who Ryan was. When these shirts are worn outside of this event they become

conversation starters. To strengthen our voice in the search for justice, we have to create a stronger community conscious.

! The second touchpoint is to involve our second audience. This will be done by designing a Peaceful Protest and featuring our printing workshop. The action will be

outside of the Sprint Center which is a block away from where the shooting took place. The purpose of this action is to further educate individuals about what really

happened to Ryan in hopes that they get inspired to make a change so that something similar doesn't happen to them or someone they love. Here are some of the

postcards that will be at the event (hand postcards out)

    ! Sam

! The Peaceful Protest, Printing event and petition push is to show that justice can happen through conversation. Similar laws to this petition have been placed in

California so it is not an unusual point of conversation, it just hasn't been a point in Kansas City but true justice has to start at home.

! Since we have started this project we have pushed this petition more and more. The true measure of success with this campaign is hard to gauge because although

informative, social media can give false hope of attendee expectations

! but one slight gauge is apparent at that is through the petition.

! When we started there were only 258 supporters. Today before our Peaceful Protest we have 286

! that is only 28 more signatures but means that people are hearing our message and that good things are on the horizon
