PREPS + TOYS

=History and Play!

As part of our Inquiry Unit this term, the Prep

students participated in a special event called

‘Toys Overtime’’. Students got to play with a

range of toys to learn about their history and

origin. The different stations included ‘imagination

world’, ‘game world’, ‘building world’ and

‘movement world’.

Some of the highlights were the elastics, puppets,

slinky, marble run, Lego, microphone that

changed our voices, pull and push toys, Mr. Pota-

to Head, spinning tops, Uno and many more. It

was lots of fun for our students and also for our

teachers, who went on a little trip down Memory

Lane, thinking about some of the games they

played when they were in prep (all those years

STAFF NEWS—Yan’s Having a baby!

Good luck to our Mandarin teacher, Yan Wu who is expecting her first child

in August. Yan has been at RPS for 4 years and has established an engaging

and much loved Mandarin program. We wish her and her husband all the

best as they await the safe arrival of their baby. We welcome Karen Lynch,

formerly of OSHClub, to our teaching staff as Yan’s replacment. Having lived

and worked in China for a number of years and qualified as a Mandarin

teacher, Karen brings much experience and enthusiasm to the role. We

look forward to further success in this great program.

Young Authors Award 2019

This year’s Young Authors Award is now open for all students at RPS! Do you have a great story idea that you’ve written all by yourself? Get writing and publish a fantastic narrative to go into the running for this year’s prize - an Avenue Bookshop voucher! It can be on any topic you like, it just has to be an original story where you can show off your most creative and imaginative ideas. Please get your entries to your classroom teacher by Monday the 12th of August and fill out the green slip that states that it is your work including ideas, typing or writing and editing. This competition is not a spelling test, we are just looking for a great story!

Teaching and Learning at RPS You may have noticed your children coming home this week talking about olden days toys, the ‘have lots and the have nots’ and flying to Butan. These tuning in experiences are part of the provocations for this term’s inquiry into the big concept of diversity. Last term teachers worked with educational consultant, Jeni Wilson to plan a student driven inquiry. Each level are addressing diversity from a different perspective. Preps are learning about, ‘How are our families the same? How are they different? What makes a family?’ This will have an emphasis on the history component of the curriculum. In 1/2, students are learning about, ‘There are similarities and differences in cultures in our school and people commemorate different things.’ This inquiry has a focus on the intercultural capabilities and build-ing geographical skills and knowledge. The 3/4 classes are looking at diversity from a historical perspective, ‘Within cultures people often have shared beliefs & practices and diversity exists within and across cultures.’ Grade 5/6 are inquiring into social diversity, in particular, ‘Diversity exists in all com-munities, this impacts individuals and groups.’ This inquiry will address the ethical and intercultural capability outcomes in the curriculum. There will be planned incursions and excursions, research, surveys and visits from community members to support children to gain a deeper knowledge of these un-derstandings. We are very excited to be on this journey to make our units of inquiry more focused on students having a real voice in their inquiry, based on concepts that are authentic and relevant to their world now, and in the future. Book Week 2019

Book Week is a wonderful chance to celebrate Australia’s amazing children literature. At RPS, we will celebrate by dressing up as our favourite book characters and holding a book parade. The students will participate in mixed-aged workshops to celebrate incredible children’s literature. The parade will take place on Thursday the 22nd of August at 9 am. The community is invited to part of parade.

ART COMPETITION

RPS Students are invited to take part in this year’s Threatened Species Art Competition, which is now open for 5-12 year olds in Victoria. Entries are open until August 2nd, so now’s a great time for kids to get involved drawing their favourite threatened Australian plant or animal, with a chance to win some amazing prizes and have their work featured in an exhibition in September. Humane Society International is coordinating the competition this year to help raise awareness about Australia’s native species and the threats they face.
