PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

We have made it to the end of Term 3 and let’s hope kids are all back next term. While I am sure all families are finding the challenge of remote learning difficult at times, can I start by thanking all parents for their support. The feedback I have received has been extremely positive regarding the online lessons that have been delivered at both Primary and Secondary school. It has been great to have Prep-Grade 2 and Year 12 students back onsite and to see their smiling faces when they have seen their friends and especially for the younger students playing in the yard. As I write this newsletter I am unaware of what Term 4 will look like but I will share information as it comes to hand. Let’s hope we are all back at the start of Term 4. I wish to clarify for parents in particular in the Secondary school that vaccinations for Covid 19 are not compulsory. The advice from the Department is that schools should provide information to families regarding the vaccine but this is completely a parent/ student decision. If parents do have questions, please contact me. We have had to postpone a number of events and activities during the term and we hope that we will be able to reschedule them at some stage. At present we are still hoping for our Grade 5/6 Camp, graduations and end of year celebrations. While they may look a little different we are planning on all activities. Thank you to all the parents that have contributed to our parent and uniform survey. I will provide information next term to students and another opportunity for parents to complete this survey. The information from these is taken to school council in Term 4 for discussion. Recently we received our NAPLAN results and there are so many things that we can be proud of. A couple of highlights were that we have 71% of our Grade 3 students in the top 2 bands in NAPLAN for reading. Our Grade 5 students have excelled in both reading and numeracy and we had 7 year 9 students received certificates for their outstanding NAPLAN results. Our students continue to perform above state averages and local schools. Thanks to Ellen Podbury and the rest of the Welfare team for their activities on R U OK day and it was great to see so many students in Yellow and Black to represent the day. Over the holidays I know there are a number of Year 12s having revision lectures for their exams and they will be studying hard. There is a light at the end of the tunnel for them. On a final note I wish every family a safe school holiday period. As teachers we have missed having the students at school and we all look forward to seeing their smiling faces again.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT

What at term! Thank you sincerely to our families for their support and commitment to their child’s learning, achievements and wellbeing in these changing times. We are unsure what day one of Term 4 looks like so we have a couple of plans. Plan A – all students will be back and normal classes resume. Plan B – for those continuing remote learning, Monday 4th October will be a Specialist Day with work set on Compass and a daily WebEx with the classroom teacher with a wellbeing focus. Packs will be ready by the Tuesday to collect if required. We are all hoping Plan A is what we can action! Events for Term 4 are uncertain at this stage. The Year 5-6 Camp, the swimming program, transition events, special visitors and excursions are all waiting on news of restrictions being further lifted. We appreciate your understanding and will try to keep communication lines open as much as we can. In preparation for a Term 4 start, can you please track down your child’s School hat. It is our policy that students must wear the School wide-brimmed hat when outside and is compulsory for Term 4. If you need a new hat, drop into Lowes at Gateway Plaza. Please ensure your child’s hat is clearly named. During Term 4, staff will be working hard on class groupings and structures for 2022. If parents have special requests you must email me directly or via the School email. Messages passed onto current teachers is not acceptable. I think Dallas Blain sums up, in his beautiful Kids Matter colouring, how we should be feeling as we look into the future.

Please make the most of the upcoming holiday period by recharging the batteries and importantly, stay safe.

RACHEL MORDEN: OUTSTANDING RESULTS! During March of this year, Rachel Morden participated in the Australian Geography Competition. Over 73,000 students from 727 schools across Australia entered the competition and the results provide an external benchmark regarding how students understand different aspects of geography. In June, we were notified that Rachel had received a High Distinction for her efforts. However, more excitement was to follow when we were informed that as well as being within the top 1% of all students, she was also one of the top sixteen Year 11 students! 3,200 Year 11 students had entered the competition. With such an outstanding result, Rachel has been selected to attend the 2021 “Geography’s Big Week Out”! There will be 8 female and 8 male students representing each State and the combined Territories. This all-expenses paid trip and prestigious event will be held on the Gold Coast and its hinterland in Queensland in early December 2021, (travel and health restrictions permitting). ‘Geography’s Big Week Out’ is a mix of stimulating, hands-on geography activities, which will challenge and extend the 16 high-achieving students invited to participate. The week also acts as the selection mechanism for choosing Australia's team of four students, who will compete at the International Geography Olympiad to be held in Paris, France in July 2022. Rachel Honey, the Co-ordinator said, “The Competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence. Geography is such an important subject because it develops in students a holistic understanding of the world around them, and their place in it.” Funding to support the Australian team and its training is provided by the Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment. The Competition is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers' Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland. Sponsorship is also received from the University of Melbourne. Again, we say, “Well done, Rachel! Timboon P-12 School is very proud of you. We wish you all the best and will follow your journey with great interest – and support.” Ms. Fiona Mackenzie, Head of Humanities

We're Back - TKR 2021!

Once again, Timboon P-12 School and the TAP proudly announce

the 2021 TKR Family ‘iso’ Challenge!

Our Timboon Kitchens Rule (TKR) family ‘iso’ challenge was

originally designed to encourage students to cook, teach life skills,

provide entertainment and a creative cooking opportunity for

families during the 2020 COVID school closures. This year, as we

continue to support and engage with our school families and

maintain our sense of community during the current COVID

restrictions, we are reinstating our TKR challenge in 2021! Due to

the existing COVID situation we are unable to provide a mystery

parcel of ingredients this time but families are most welcome to

participate in our challenge event.

If you wish to be a part of our TKR task, your family is required to-

• Create your favourite family meal using either potato, rice or

pasta.

• You can use as many other ingredients as you like.

• Send the recipe, a photo of family members cooking and a

photo of the completed dish by 17th September to the

school email address with your details

[email protected]

• Enjoy!!

Examples of your culinary skills will be showcased on the Timboon

P-12 School Facebook page and the TAP Blog.

GORGE Chocolates at the Chocolate Alpaca Despite the restrictions imposed by remote learning, we wanted to make the VCE Business Management class’ investigation of marketing as real, relevant, unforgettable and delicious as possible! Ian and Angela Preuss, the owners of the rebranded GORGE Chocolates and the Chocolate Alpaca, were the perfect fit as they generously shared their story and plans for the future in a recorded interview for the Business Management students. Ian and Angela described their passion for alpacas, their desire to operate their business in a tourist area and the myriad of opportunities provided by agribusiness and tourism in our region. They showcased their extensive product range of chocolates, alpaca goods and local produce and provided examples of how their business utilises the ‘7 Ps’ of marketing – Product, Price, Place, People, Promotion, Process and Physical Evidence. The Preuss’ outlined how they were able to pivot their business and draw on the options provided by the chocolates, alpacas and café in the current COVID climate. We are extremely fortunate that entrepreneurs like Ian and Angela contribute to our student’s learning and provide an understanding of business opportunities in our region.

TAP’s On! is our annual student led, interactive showcase where students, supported by teachers, industry and community mentors, demonstrate their TAP curriculum learning outcomes to their peers, parents, invited educators and members of our community. Given the restrictions to school visitors including TAP classroom presenters, the cancelation of many excursions off campus so far this year and the ongoing uncertainty around lockdowns, we have made the tough decision to cancel our 2021 TAP’s On! expo. So unfortunately, ex Masterchef contestant, Tim Bone, will not be coming to Timboon as our guest presenter for TAP's On! We will endeavour to fulfill our other TAP curriculum and community focus activities such as Farm Safety, literacy with Simone Kain, Camembert judging, genetics investigations, TKR, learning ‘How things grow’, visiting alpacas, harvesting our lavender crop, junior physics, guest speakers when possible and staging events like Tough Udder. So, keep watching this space for the remainder of the year for our ever-evolving TAP activities ... looking forward to TAP's On! 2022.

Spring has sprung! To celebrate Spring and to welcome Preps back into the classroom, today our Preps undertook a nature walk around the Timboon P-12 School grounds observing the seasonal changes. Back in the classroom the students drew and decorated patterned vases on cardboard and carefully pushed holes through the cardboard to mount the natural materials and flowers they sourced on their walk. Check out their vibrant vases and beautiful blooms, aren’t they clever!
