The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading

A lesson from The Book of Isaiah (35:1-10).1

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad,

the desert shall rejoice and blossom;

like the crocus

2it shall blossom abundantly,

and rejoice with joy and singing.

The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,

the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.

They shall see the glory of the Lord,

the majesty of our God.3Strengthen the weak hands,

and make firm the feeble knees.4Say to those who are of a fearful heart,

“Be strong, do not fear!

Here is your God.

He will come with vengeance,

with terrible recompense.

He will come and save you.”5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,

and the ears of the deaf unstopped;6then the lame shall leap like a deer,

and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.

For waters shall break forth in the wilderness,

and streams in the desert;7the burning sand shall become a pool,

and the thirsty ground springs of water;

the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp,

4

the grass shall become reeds and rushes.8A highway shall be there,

and it shall be called the Holy Way;

the unclean shall not travel on it,

but it shall be for God’s people;

no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray.9No lion shall be there,

nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;

they shall not be found there,

but the redeemed shall walk there.10

And the ransomed of the Lord shall return,

and come to Zion with singing;

everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;

they shall obtain joy and gladness,

and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Psalm 146:4-9

Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! *whose hope is in the Lord their God;

Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; *who keeps his promise for ever;

Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, *and food to those who hunger.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;the Lord opens the eyes of the blind; *the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;

The Lord loves the righteous;the Lord cares for the stranger; *he sustains the orphan and widow,but frustrates the way of the wicked.

The Lord shall reign for ever, *your God, O Zion, throughout all generations.Hallelujah!

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in thebeginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Second Reading

A lesson from The Letter of James (5:7-10).7Be patient, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop

from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.8You also

must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.9Beloved, do not

grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at

the doors!10

As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke

in the name of the Lord.

Gospel

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew (11:2-11).Glory be to thee, O Lord.2When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples

3

and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?”4Jesus

answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see:5the blind receive their sight, the

lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have

good news brought to them.6And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”

7As they

went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the

wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind?8What then did you go out to see?

Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces.9What

then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.10

This is

the one about whom it is written,

‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,

who will prepare your way before you.’11

Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the

Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all thingsvisible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begottenof his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten,not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who forus men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghostof the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, andascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again,with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And Ibelieve in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father andthe Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake bythe Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge oneBaptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life ofthe world to come. Amen.

Almighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, andsupplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer untothy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with thespirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Namemay agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love.

Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops and other ministers, that they may, both bytheir life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thyholy Sacraments.

And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation herepresent; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word,truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life.

We beseech thee also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of government inthis and every land ...that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfareand peace of the world.

Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that,rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithfulstewards of thy bounty.

And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor all thosewho, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.

Additional petitions and thanksgivings may be included here.

And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fearbeseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service; and to grant us graceso to follow the good examples of all thy saints, that with them we may be partakers of thyheavenly kingdom.

Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate.Amen.

The Celebrant continues

All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy,didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; whomade there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficientsacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and inhis holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death andsacrifice, until his coming again.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks, hebrake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given foryou. Do this in remembrance of me.

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed foryou, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, inremembrance of me.

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly belovedSon our Savior Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thydivine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thySon hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and preciousdeath, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most heartythanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almightygoodness, vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy giftsand creatures of bread and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our SaviorJesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers ofhis most blessed Body and Blood.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice ofpraise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and deathof thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, mayobtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion.

And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be areasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee that we, and all

others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the mostprecious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenlybenediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him.

And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice,yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits,but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ our Lord;

By whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honor and glory be unto thee,O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

Lord's Prayer

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

People andCelebrant

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, aswe forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver usfrom evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

We are not worthy so much as togather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is alwaysto have mercy.
