Lesson ObjectivesLesson Objectives

• Why is fitness testing important?

• How do we test local muscular endurance?

• What are the aspects of skill related fitness?

• Which one of these is most important to badminton and why?

Court-based TestingCourt-based Testing

• You will gather data on your performance within the game of badminton using a:

• Court Movement Scatter Gram• Self Analysis of Court Movement

• Court Movement Scatter Gram Procedure:– Play a competitive game against an opponent of similar ability.– The game will last 12 minutes.– A partner will record where on the court you moved to and

whether or not you returned the shuttle successfully ( or X).– 3 different colours of pen were used to record your performance at

different stages of play.• 0-4 mins = Red 4-8 mins = Black 8-12 mins = Blue

What will this data show us?What will this data show us?

• Where on the court we moved to and whether we successfully returned the shuttle or not.

• What pattern are you likely to see if you have poor local muscular endurance?

• Shots played in the corners will be reached and returned successfully at the beginning of the game. As the game progresses and we become tired we will continue to play successful returns from the centre of the court but will fail to reach or return shots at the sides and in the corners because we couldn’t move quick enough to reach them or play them accurately.

Self Analysis of Court Movement

• This will be completed after your game.

• You will assess how you felt at different stages of your 12 minute game.

Fitness testingFitness testing

• Each aspect of fitness has a standardised test.• Standardised fitness testing allows you to:• 1. assess your current level of fitness• 2. plan an appropriate training programme• 3. compare your performance to national standards• 4. monitor your progress throughout your training to

see if any changes are required in your programme• 5. compare your results from the start and end of

your programme

• The standardised test we will use for local muscular endurance is the Harvard Step Test.

Harvard Step TestHarvard Step Test

• The test is conducted as follows:

1. Step up on to a 45cm high gym bench once every two seconds for five minutes (150 steps)

2. Have someone to help you keep to the required pace

3. One minute after finishing the test take your pulse rate (bpm) for 30 seconds – Pulse 1

4. Two minutes after finishing the test take your pulse rate (bpm) for 30 seconds – Pulse 2

5. Three minutes after finishing the test take your pulse rate (bpm) for 30 seconds - Pulse 3

• The three pulse rates are then used in a calculation to rate your level of fitness against national averages.

• Your level of fitness is based on your rate of recovery after exercise.

Calculating your ScoreCalculating your Score

• The formula below is used to work out your test score:

Score = __30000___

(p1 + p2 + p3) x 2

• Task – match the definitions below with the appropriate aspect of skill related fitness.

• the ability to control movements smoothly and fluently.• the ability to retain the centre of gravity over your base of

support.• the ability to move the body quickly and precisely.• the time taken between the recognition of a signal and

the start of a movement.

AgilityAgility

• Why is agility important for badminton?

• Being an agile badminton player will allow you to reach, lunge, change direction easily and react quickly to get to the place on the court where you need to be to return the shuttle effectively.
