Term 1 Parent Teacher Interviews

Term 1 parent/teacher interviews are taking place in weeks 9and 10. At Eumundi we have a ‘no surprises’ policy in termsof student academic progress and behaviour and I wouldencourage all parents to make a time to see their child’s classteacher to discuss progress, concerns etc. prior to the teachersdeveloping their end of semester reports. While it is only earlyin the year, the interviews are an excellent opportunity to learnmore about how your children have started the 2019 schoolyear. The interviews will give you an insight into your child’s

strengths and future areas to focus on for improvementthroughout the year.

Parents will receive an email on Monday 11 March withinstructions of how to book your interview. Online bookingswill open Monday 11 March, 2019 until Wednesday 20 March,2019.

Cyber Safety

Recently a representative from the Eumundi Police spoke tothe Year 5/6 students about Cyber Safety. Mr Midgley isconducting cyber safety lessons as part of his DigitalTechnology lessons with students from PREP to Year 6. Asparents it is also important that you take the time to speak withyour child about what it means to be cyber safe, and whatyou as a parent can do to ensure that your child is cyber safe.To assist with these conversations please refer to the followingdocument.

Kim and Charli will be working with a select group of Year 2students throughout the year. The students choose a book andread with Kim and Charli for twenty minutes each week. BothKim and Charli love listening to children read in one-on-onesessions where they can all relax and enjoy the stories together.

CURRICULUMIn each year of schooling your child is exposed to a range oflearning experiences in a number of learning areas. PreviousNewsmundis have outlined these learning areas and how theylook in Term 1 in each year level. While our teachers havea thorough understanding of the curriculum in each learningarea, schools identify areas to further focus on in order tofurther improve student learning outcomes. Over recent years,Eumundi has had an explicit focus on mathematics, spellingand currently reading. Over the next few Newsmundis I willfocus on each of these areas and how having an explicit focushas influenced or is influencing what occurs in the classroom foryour child/ren, with this issue focusing on mathematics.

At Eumundi over recent years considerable work has beendone on deepening teachers knowledge of the AustralianCurriculum: Mathematics; the content in number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability; andhow the content is explored through developing fluency, understanding, problem solving and reasoning.

So what does this mean for the teaching of mathematics atEumundi?

At Eumundi we:

As a result of this, teachers then identified what mathematics inEumundi classrooms looks like, sounds like and feels like.

What does the teaching and learning of mathematics look likein Eumundi State School classrooms:

What does the teaching and learning of mathematics sound likein Eumundi State School classrooms:

What does the teaching and learning of mathematics feel like inEumundi State School classrooms:

How do we achieve this?

While this occurs in the classroom, parents/carers often askwhat they can do to assist their child/ren with mathematicalconcepts. The following provides some practical mathematicalquestions that you can ask your child/ren that will help them ineveryday life.

• have moved away from a ‘chalk and talk’ directteaching method, to a more student-centredapproach

• recognise that there are facts and proceduresrequired for knowing and understanding mathematics

• value investigating, thinking, reasoning and relatingmathematics to real-life situations

• know students need to explore and investigate to beable to discuss and justify

• emphasise the process not the answer

• It has active and engaged learners – students doingmathematics.

• It has active and supportive teachers.

• Students are learning independently, in small groupsand whole class.

• A variety of appropriate resources are being utilisedto support learning.

• There will be evidence of ICT use in mathematics.

• Students are learning and investigating in differentways.

• There is evidence of higher order thinking.

• Purposeful and meaningful discussions can be heardbetween students; between students and teachers.

• Reasonable justifications can be heard – I think …because…

• Insightful, open-ended and challenging questions arebeing asked.

• Collaboration and sharing of ideas is valued.

• A ‘noisy’ classroom is okay.

• Words of encouragement, praise and support arecommon.

• Supportive and safe where students feel confident tooffer answers and all answers are accepted.

• Valuing different ideas and strategies (collaboration).

• Success is achievable for everyone.

• Maths is FUN and exciting!

• Students take responsibility for their own learning.

• Challenging. Not all solutions come easily.

• Constructive and non-judgemental feedback.

• Teachers have a deep understanding of theAustralian Curriculum: Mathematics. This has beenfurther enhanced recently with Eumundi teachersmeeting with teachers from other schools to examinein depth what needs to taught and assessed in eachterm.

• Identifying what the students know and do not knowthrough the use of a range of assessments includinga diagnostic assessment called Show Me papers, and then planning learning experiences to cater forthe students’ needs.

• Utilising a range of activities to activate mathematics.Such activities include explicit teaching, warm ups, open ended questioning and number talks.

MUSIC NotesThe Glorious World of Choir Part 2:A study commissioned by the Victorian Health Commissionfound, participants who sing in choirs address life goals andare consistently positive. When fully immersed in choral activity, there is little additional space left to worry about the self. Peoplein choirs report fun, enjoyment, happiness, humour, excesssmiling, exhilaration and…relaxation. So if your Year 1 or Year2 child came home babbling about morning tea and singing ina choir in the Music Room last week and this..…that’s what wedo on Tuesday for 10 minutes before play.

My Wednesday choir sang for the student badge ceremonylast parade and we are working towards some lovely songsfor our ANZAC ceremony coming up next. We have some

new members and I wish to thank all parents who deliver theirchildren early for this experience.

CHAPPY CHAT“Sometimes the greatest gift you can give another person isto simply include them…” I’m not sure where this quote camefrom, I came across it on social media and I gave a loud “YES!”when I read it. I love these types of quotes and lessons becausesometimes I think we complicate things, this is simplicity inaction. Just simply include a person in what you are alreadydoing. Include a person in your circle, at your lunch spot, in yourgame, at your table and wherever else you see a person left out. This week I noticed a student in the Year 1 area who looked abit unhappy, I went and spoke with the student and discoveredthey didn’t have anyone to play with today, their friend wasaway. “Ah well, what to do?” I asked this student. I said “Doyou know we have buddy bench - a friendship seat right here inyour playground. How about we go and sit on it and see whathappens?” The seat has been there for a while now so I waswondering if the students know what this seat is for. We hadbarely got comfortable when 3 smiling students came runningup asking “What’s the matter?” As we explained the situationof not having a friend to play with they all invited the student tocome play with them. Simply put, that is kindness in action, thatis giving of our time, including someone in our game, being afriend, a smiling face and caring enough to go out of their wayto check if someone was ok and what they could do. I wasextremely proud of them.

There are numerous articles around inclusion and belonging. How the feeling of being included, to be a part of something,to feel valued and important helps us to grow and learn. Evenas adults we need to feel this. As I was reading more aboutinclusion I was reminded again about being a role model formy own children and those around me. I was prompted to askmyself “Do I practice inclusion myself?” Would the little eyesthat watch me, see me simply being kind? Giving the gift ofinclusion, of quietly telling a person through your actions that“You matter, You are important, I see you,” is often the greatestgift that they will never forget.

Also if you’d like to be INCLUDED in our Chaplaincy committeeour next meeting is on Tuesday 26th March 8.45am in the ArtHouse. We would love to have you join us.

P&CThe next P&C Meeting will be on 19th March at 8:30am inthe Meeting Room in A Block. Then the AGM to elect a newexecutive will be held on 26th March in the Staff Room.
