SECONDARY SECTION

We are pleased to have come to the

end of yet another captious and en-

gaging term filled with enthralling

events! Looking back at some of

the highlights of the term…

THE CEO’S FOREWORD

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Greetings!

It gives me great pleasure to place before you the second edition of

the newsletter designed by the students. We are indeed proud of their

passion, creativity and efforts! The students editors have been men-

toring their juniors in year 11 and this newsletter is a wonderful ef-

fort from this team. In line with our one Academy Policy, our term

end Newsletters endeavor to provide a bird’s eye-view of termly Ac-

ademic Activities.

This newsletter will provide a glimpse of the various activities and events of the Second

Term. The Second Term is a short but intensely busy term. It is also a very critical term for the

examination candidates. In spite of the Mock Examinations that these candidates appear for,

they walk the extra mile to take part in all school activities whether internal or external. These

students indeed deserve praise for being stoic and resilient. These are qualities that these stu-

dents will require when they step out into the world of work.

Last but not the least, as explained in the various fora that we organize, please ensure that

your wards take part in as many extra-curricular and sporting activities as may be possible.

Attendance is a key requirement and attendance records of students will now be mentioned in

every school referral and leaving certificate. I urge all parents to ensure that students meet the

Academy’s attendance criteria so that attendance records on school referrals and leaving cer-

tificates do not negatively affect the future prospects for the students. Note here that a school

referral is an important requirement for University Admissions too.

I have also personally stated many times that we are going back to the roots –

Academic Rigour, Discipline and Humility. Our journey continues!

On behalf of the Premier Academy family, I wish all candidates the very best for the Cam-

bridge Checkpoint, IGCSE, IAS and IAL Examinations.

Happy Reading!

KINDERGARTEN SECTION Our Reception theme for the term was “Trees” hence

our Reception children visited Karura forest on a tree

planting activity. Children set off for this trip and en-

joyed the day planting several trees and fulfilling the

role of giving back to our environment.

EMBRACING OUR DIVERSE CULTURES

Each year, the Kindergarten sets aside one week to cele-

brate our various cultures. The main objective behind this

event is to celebrate our diversity as a kindergarten commu-

nity. We have students from diverse cultures and back-

grounds, and we celebrate this diversity. We have therefore

felt the need to appreciate each other as well as build a spirit

of tolerance so as to live as one big united international

community at Premier Academy.

TRIP TO MLANGO FARM

Our Playgroup children went on a trip to Mlan-

go farm. This was in line with their “farm ani-

mals” theme. While at this trip, children got to

feed farm animals and even took a tour around

the vegetable garden. Children came dressed in

gum boots and had fun viewing the animals as

they fed and walked around at the farm.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Clean up activity:

For community service this term, our Kindergarten

children engaged in clean- up activities. Different

classes had different areas allocated for clean up by

their homerooms. Some of the activities undertaken

included cleaning of plates and cups used during mid-

morning snack, picking up of litter around the

kindergarten compound, sweeping, and wiping of

tables. We thank all parents for their cooperation

towards making this activity successful and helping us

build better leaders for tomorrow.

TRIP TO WADI-DEGLA SPORTS AND

LEISURE CENTER

In line with their theme on “sports around the world”, our Nursery children

paid a visit to Wadi Degla sports and leisure club located along Kiambu road.

While at the club, the children got to see various sporting facilities and even

got an opportunity to swim. They later had a picnic at the grounds and got on

the bus and rode back to school. They had a great time.

Charity Bake-sale

Another activity undertaken this term as part of communi-

ty service was holding a charity bake sale. During this

event, parents bought snacks made from home for sale

with the proceeds being given back to charity. We man-

aged to raise approximately Ksh 26,000. We have made

arrangements to purchase cereals that were required by 2

schools that we support in Kajiado during April holidays.

These items shall then be delivered together with toys and

books donated earlier by staff of the Kindergarten.

SCOUTS CAMP ON PREMIER

GROUNDS

This term, our scouts had yet another brilliant suc-

cessful camping adventure on Premier Academy

grounds. This time round, our scouts registered a

slightly higher number of about 20 scouts more com-

pared to the last camp. This clearly indicates that

scouting is becoming more popular at Premier Acade-

my. Objectives achieved include:

Learning how to set up the camp site.

Team work.

Participating in outdoor activities that develop

physical fitness, skills for self-reliance, and

resourcefulness.

Effective communication with other scouts to

promote the spirit of brotherhood.

Making wise choices and good decisions.

ASSEMBLIES

This term’s Friday assemblies had different themes

that were aimed at reinforcing what is discussed in

class. Through these assemblies, the message is

transmitted practically in a language that is easily

understood by all. These weekly assemblies not only

make the children more confident individuals in front

of the world, but also bring out their inner talents

which are showcased in front of each and every stu-

dent of the primary section.

TREASURE HUNT FUN

The activity was held during clubs on 2nd February

2018 in the Prep School Compound. Teachers of Year 3

and 4 sent two questions each. Each club was instructed

to divide themselves into four groups.

Students enjoyed exploring and solving the riddles in

search of answers.

CLUSTER ASSEMBLIES

These are pastoral based assemblies held according

to Year groups. During these assemblies, external

speakers are invited to talk to the students. The

themes for this term were as follows:

January - Politeness and Good Manners

February - Competitiveness

March - Generosity

YEAR 5 TRIP TO NAIROBI

NATIONAL PARK

Our Year 5 students visited the Nairobi National

Park where they not only saw different animals

in their natural habitat but they also saw feeding

at the orphanage.

YEAR 6 TRIP TO NGONG HILLS

Year 6 went on a trekking trip at Ngong Hills.

This was not only an educational trip but also a

bonding and fun trip.

YEAR 2 TRIP TO LITTLE SISTERS OF

THE POOR, RUARAKA

The Year 2 pupils (99 of them) accompanied by 8

of their teachers went to visit the elderly as part of

their termly educational trip on the 1st of March

2018.

The Home cares for 71 Poor Elderly People. They

are between 68 to107 years old. Most of them are

sick and infirm.

The pupils had brought in donations comprising of

food stuffs, toiletries, adult diapers, clothes and

money totaling Ksh 23,000 (from some pupils and

some members of the Premier Prep staff). The Sis-

ters received these and were grateful and implored

us to spread the word to anyone wishing to visit

that they would be happy if they brought them adult

diapers in plenty and money to cater for medical

bills and payment of their employees.

STEM PROJECT

ANNUAL SWIMMING GALA

On the 23rd of February 2018, our Prep school held

their Annual Swimming Gala Competition. In the

course of the day, our children fought it out in the

swimming pool, but in the end only one of us could

have emerged victorious and on this occasion it was

Red House. Our children swam throughout the day

to help their respective houses cross the victory line.

However Red House proved to be most successful

on doing so and took home the shield!

Learning can be fun if the learners are given

an opportunity to apply the acquired

knowledge. This term, our children had an

opportunity to produce amazing projects in

Science, Technology and Mathematics

(STEM). The students did an outstanding job

as they were able to understand and relate to

the themes of this activity very easily. The

activity allowed our students not only to show

case their skills in Science, Technology and

Mathematics, but also in the field of creativity

as they were able to portray their ideas not

only clearly but also in a very innovative and

interactive way.

SOCIAL BUTTERLY EVENT

Our teachers and the secondary students had the opportuni-

ty to work with the autistic children who came during the

fifth autism day held on 24th February. There was a lot to

learn and thank God for because of what he has blessed us

with. We learned that we take a lot of things for granted

such as the mere ability to speak when some cannot even

express their feelings.

THE EAMUN CONFERENCES

MUN simulates the activities of the real United Na-

tions Organization and aims to build up the confi-

dence and enhance the debate skills of all the partici-

pants.

MSMUN

The Middle-School Model United Nations confer-

ence was held in January 2018. It proved to be an

invigorating learning experience for all the students

involved. Similar to the EAMUN conference,

MSMUN especially trains students in the art of pub-

lic speaking. They are able to discuss world-issues

under the critical guidance of the student leaders.

EAMUN

A group of Year 11, 12 and13 students from the EA-

MUN club attended a week-long EAMUN conference

held at the UN Offices in Gigiri from February 19th to

February 23rd. They were accompanied by Ms. Alili

and Mr. Okello. The students actively participated in

different activities during the conference. The team

had delegates representing different countries whereby

they competed with other delegates from other schools

to come up with the best solutions to different prob-

lems affecting their countries. Some of the students

were among members of the EAMUN press.

On the last day of the conference, outstanding partici-

pants were announced. Harshil Ved and Rohan

Lakhani were voted the best speakers in their respec-

tive committees at the conference.

The Sub Saharan International Model United Nations

liberating on Sustainable Development Goals, specifi-

cally:

To promote a better understanding of the

Sustainable Development Goals amongst

participants.

To increase knowledge on current international

affairs, nations societies and cultures.

of the tournament was Preena Shah of Year 10.

ELOCUTION

Every year we organize an Elocution competition

where students exhibit pronunciation and recitation

skills and compete to see who emerges best. This activ-

ity is quite helpful in as far as sharpening of students’

pronunciation skills goes. It is usually organized in

three categories, i.e Junior, Middle level and Senior

students, with both male and female students distribut-

ed equally. This term our students performed excep-

tionally well.

For the first time all participants were able to recite the

poems without referring to the scripts. At the end of the

event, we consider everyone a winner since it was an

opportunity to enjoy the secret treasures hidden in poet-

ry and many students’ love for poems and literature

was rekindled. In between the presentations, every

house had a chance to show case talent through ice

breakers. After all, learning is supposed to be enjoyable

and memorable and that is exactly what elocution

proved.

The Year 11 Physics students went to Olkaria geo-

thermal power station to learn about green energy

production, cost efficiency in electrical energy, ener-

gy transmission, transformation of energy, electro-

magnetic induction and how the power station works.

The students were carefully taken through each pro-

cess and got to witness the production of electricity

from the ground. The trip was however not just edu-

cational, but fun as well. For lunch the students went

to Buffalo Mall.

YEAR 11 TRIP TO OLKARIA GEOTHERMAL POWER STATION

MATHS QUIZ.

This event was held on the 21st of February 2018.

Students needed to compete in three categories, ie:

quick fire, individual and group questions. The main

objective was to change the perception of Maths as

being a tool rather than a subject, and this goal was

successfully attained with minimum effort required

by the passionate students from all the different

house colors. Overall, Yellow House emerged the

winners of this gracious event.

COLLECTION OF PA GOLD AWARDS

FROM STATE HOUSE

The Presidential Award programme is a challenging

programme. This year, students from Year 12 com-

pleted the PA Gold Expedition, successfully complet-

ing the programme. We are proud that, over 60 of our

students went to State House where they had the op-

portunity to listen to the inspiring words of His Excel-

lency President Uhuru Kenyatta. Harshil Ved was

given the chance to go collect the award on behalf of

the school from the President. Kudos to the awardees

this year and we hope to see many more in the future.

YEAR 7 HISTORY TRIP TO BOMAS OF KENYA

The trip aimed to tackle the syllabus content which

is about people of Kenya up until the 19th century.

The trip gave the children better understanding of

the native Kenyan communities. Bomas of Kenya is

a place that is rich with national history and it is

essential, considering that we live in this country,

that we know at least some of our history.

FRENCH TRIP TO FRENCH CUL-TURAL CENTER

The French students were taken to Alliance

Francaise to put their skills in the language to

test. At the center, they took part in various

activities that allowed them to hone their skills

and put into practice what they learn in class.

THE GREATEST SHOW—ANNUAL

SCHOOL PLAY

The school musical titled “THE GREATEST

SHOW” (nothing close to the film that shares the

name) was a last minute production written, pro-

duced and directed in a record one month.

The musical, the story about Cecilia, handles key

themes that relate to teenagers such us bullying, ab-

sentee parenting, talent exploitation and relation-

ships amongst others. The level of talent realized

was overwhelming with students displaying raw tal-

ent in singing, acting, instruments, costuming, light,

sound and backstage management.

The story is that of hope, love, persistence, and

dreams.

The team that worked together on the show was de-

rived from the Drama, Music, Art and English de-

partment. The collaborative approach towards the

production was magnificent.

PREFECTS INVESTITURE EVENING

On the 16th of February 2018, a new Prefects body

lead by our Head Prefect Jaini Shah and Deputy

Head Prefect Harshil Ved were sworn in. This pres-

tigious event is one of the most important events on

the Premier Academy calendar. The new prefects

have a challenging year ahead and we would like to

wish them the best of luck. Furthermore, we would

like to thank the outgoing prefects for a job well

done. Jaini Shah powerfully delivered an inspiring

speech. Our out-going Head Prefect Akhil

Nadigatla gave a touching final speech to end the

evening.

YEAR 13 CHEMISTRY TRIP TO ICRAF

On 15Th February 2018, the Chemistry class of twenty

eighty students of year 13 went on an educational trip

to ICRAF. The students learned about soil analysis

using different kinds of instrumentation such as Infra-

red, X-ray and NMR. This trip was in line with ana-

lytical methods learned by students in unit 4 of

Chemistry.

The success of this trip is attributed to The Principal

Scientist (Pigeon pea & Chickpea Breeding) of ICRI-

SAT Mr. Ganga Rao.

UCLAN LAW DEBATE

The University of Central Lancashire Law debate was

held on 22nd January 2018 at Brookhouse School from

9:00am to 2:30pm. A total of 8 international schools

participated in the competition.

Premier Academy was represented by Riya Poojari

and Harshil Ved. The two contestants were applauded

for putting up a spirited fight in the debate while at the

same time organizing their campaigns for being elect-

ed as senior prefects in school. We celebrate the fact

that they clinched the posts.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO

SARIT CENTRE

The Geography students of Year 10 visited Sarit cen-

tre on the 2nd of February 2018. The aim of the trip

was to expose the students to the fieldwork which

they would need to do for their final ‘O’ Level exam-

ination. The students had the task to collect infor-

mation on shopping habits. The trip was a success as

the students were able to complete their tasks on

time. The whole exercise went on smoothly and all

the objectives that were set out were achieved.

INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITIES

FAIR AT PREMIER CLUB

On Thursday, February 22, 2018, the Careers De-partment co-hosted an International Universities Fair at Premier Club. A total of 34 universities from various destinations were represented. The destinations included New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia, Malaysia and South Africa. Over 300 students attended from Premier (Years 11-13); Aga Khan Academy (37); Rusinga (35); and Precious Blood-Riruta (45).

Random talks with students and delegates revealed that they were quite satisfied with the event and the way it was conducted. Our students were highly commended by a cross-section of delegates for asking ‘pertinent questions.’ All the participants were briefed before proceeding to the stands to talk to delegates. The school had extended the invitation to parents and quite a number attended. Representing Universitv Edu-cation, Mr Rahim Kassam, the Operations Manag-er, said he was satisfied with the turnout and participation of invitees. The fair was also attended by a BOG member, Mr. Pinal Patel, who suggested that students should be exposed to such events right from Year 9 to increase the level of awareness on careers options and relevant subject choices. He suggested that there should be a par-ents’ workshop as part of the Year 9 induction.

WILDLIFE CLUB TO GIRAFFE

CENTRE

On the 28th of February 2018, the members of

our Wildlife club visited Giraffe Centre, where

the students enjoyed feeding the giraffes and at

the same time taking away with them a whole

load of knowledge about giraffes. The students

were taken to a hall where they were taught about

the different types of giraffes. This was a memo-

rable trip for our students as they were able to

learn while having fun with the animals.

YEAR 12 BIOLOGY TRIP TO

KARURA FOREST

21 of our Year 12 students doing Biology visited Karura forest on the 23rd of February 2018. Their objectives for the trip included:

To study the plant biodiversity in Karura For-est

To evaluate the conservation methods for en-dangered species used in Karura.

To identify the adaptive features in different types of plants.

These objectives were achieved through investi-gations by sampling techniques, a worksheet, aid-ed species identification by a guide and a Q&A session on conservation, its success rate and challenges.

YEAR 12 PASTORAL TRIP TO

ELSAMERE

The Year 12 pastoral trip was a huge success in all

fronts. We left school on Saturday 17th March at

7.45 a.m. and were in Elsamere before 10 a.m.

We quickly settled into our various programmes of

activities to bond with each other. Enthusiastically,

the students took to the activities with joy. We

broke for lunch at about 1 p.m.

The highlight of the day was a fashion show which

was purely a hilarious account. The dress code was

newspaper cuttings moulded creatively into a fash-

ion dress. The students looked fantastic during the

fashion parade. We had a break later in the evening

before assembling for dinner.

Sunday 18 March began with a brilliant sunshine.

At least there was no rain and we could resume our

activities in the open ground.

Later, we went back to the hall for a session with

Mr. Shem Agunga who gave a talk on motivation.

The Year 12 students received him well and we

closed the activities for lunch at 12 p.m. After

lunch, it was time to leave for Nairobi before the

heavy down pour that was threatening us all the

way began. The trip was remarkable and the stu-

dents suggested that we should have more of the

same.

YEAR 7 PASTORAL TRIP TO

ELSAMERE

Students participated in various activities with close supervision of teachers and facilitators. This they said was the most interesting part of their experience as they were able to learn and have fun.

Out of the many topics they discussed, the main focus was on how to deal with bullying and peer pressure in school.

The trip was very fruitful and beneficial to the students and the HRTs were challenged by the Year Group Coordinator to follow up on the lessons taught in the pastoral lessons. The Face to Face team did a commendable job especially in having all the students engaged and creatively coming up with interesting ways of learning.

YEAR 13 BIOLOGY AND

GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO MOMBASA

The ecological trip for the year 13 Biology class suc-

cessfully took place between 25th and 28th Jan 2018 as

scheduled. Six students attended the trip and the fol-

lowing objectives were achieved:

To practice use of quantitative field techniques to

study zonation along a rocky shore.

To investigate the species diversity using

systematic sampling, belt transect.

To determine whether there is correlation between

position on the shore and species diversity.

To investigate the distribution of organisms in a

marine littoral habitat.

To investigate the effect of abiotic and biotic

factors on species distribution.

To find out if there is a difference between shell

length of barnacles in exposed and sheltered

shores.

P.O.C TRIP TO DAGORETTI GIRLS’ RE-

HABILITATION CENTRE

Fourteen POC members visited Dagoretti Girl’s Reha-

bilitation School on 24th March, 2018 for community

service.

Objective for the trip:

To offer physical and emotional support as well as

donations to the girls under rehabilitation.

The students engaged the girls in motivational talks

by letting each girl say what they would wish to

pursue in future.

They played a variety of games with the girls.

They were involved in a tree planting exercise.

They gave donations of food stuffs and other com-

modities.

The programme started at 8am and ended at 1pm

This term, the Pastoral department organised a seminar

for the Year 10 students to be trained on various life

skills. This was conducted at the Elsamere conservation

centre for two days. The students had an opportunity to

express themselves to the trainers and learned strategies

on how to overcome the challenges they face both at

school and at home.

This was essential as they are now entering the critical

IGCSE year.

The coaches organised them into group activities that

would help them to tackle the following challenges:

Stress

Exam anxiety

Peer pressure /self esteem

Relationships

Focussing attention

Anger management

The trip was not only educative but also full of fun.

YEAR 10 PASTORAL TRIP

WORDS FROM THE STUDENT-EDITORS-IN-CHIEF

We have finally come to the end of a busy but successful term. This term, we as the student chief editors decided to

implement the first stage of our succession plan into place, by training and selecting individuals who would take up

our role in the months to come. We did so by carefully selecting a group of 7 hardworking and passionate Yr.11

students, who would form the newsletter team. They were in charge of compiling all the information provided by

teachers, and designing this term’s newsletter under close supervision by us. These students are:

Divyesh Ved 11(1)

Diya Soni 11(2)

Fatema Bhaijee 11(1)

Shlok Sachdev 11(2)

Tiffany Marimba 11(1)

Anika Gujral 11(1)

Nidhi Dimri 11(2)

The task gave the students a new experience while producing their first school publication. We would like to whole-

heartedly thank and congratulate these students on a job well done.

The Student Editors,

Samarth Sheth and Harshil Ved.
