Preliminary film Evaluation

Preliminary Film Evaluation My task was to plan and create a preliminary film which lasted 2 minutes. Before I started filming, I needed to think about the story plot and the title. I did a 5 question plan, storyboard, dialogue script and shooting script. My preliminary film was about parents evening because part of the criteria required one character to open a door, sit down at the desk, and hold a conversation with someone. The story plot of my film was about a student and her mum who went to school to have a meeting with the teacher about the pupil’s grades. The genre of my film is education hence why the film takes place in the school. The story I wish to express through my short clip is that in order to achieve good grades, you must work extremely hard. Nothing in life which is worth fighting for comes easy. Before I started filming I did a storyboard so that I knew what to do when filming. When I did the storyboard I needed to think carefully of how my story plot will take place in each scene and to include the opening the door, sit down at the desk and hold a conversation with someone. Also when I did the shooting script I needed to show how my filming will take place and it will help me to direct myself when filming. I needed to make sure that my resources were there before I started filming for example: camera, tripod, report and smart clothing. To do that I needed to make sure that the camera was fully charged the tripod in working order and the actors fully prepared. I also needed to make sure that the set location was not occupied prior to the time of filming. Whilst filming, I tried to include different types of camera angels and shots for example: low angel, long shot, medium shot and close up shot. A combination of varying shots should better the quality of my film and help give the audience a better understanding of the surrounding places. I used several point of view shots within character conversations; this enabled me to clearly show characters facial expressions. Also when I used the 180 degree rule I needed to make sure that I didn’t confuse the audience by not passing the imagery line and my rule of thirds is focusing on one object or person that I am filming on. The time management was not good because I needed to make sure that I and my characters are free to start filming but I finished filming quickly than I expected before the deadline. What I like about my film is that it looked like a real parents evening and the cast was doing well when filming my film. Also the editing, camera shots and angels were appropriate for my film. What I don’t like about my film is that I need to make sure that the sound was not loud during the conversation so that the audience can listen and understand the conversation. Also I should use more camera angels, shots and movement during my film to make the film more interesting for the audience to watch.

When filming my film the things that were challenging is that I needed to make sure the camera angels and shots were shot appropriately and when editing I have to look over again and again so that everything is in order. Also when I did one mistake I need to ask my cast to wear exactly the same clothes in the film so that I can redo the scene again. The things that I want to redo are when the cast were having a conversation because I need them to remember the script so that it looks more natural because they looked nervous during the film. Overall, I think that my film was good and it will be suitable for education because it’s about parents evening and grades. Also I include everything for example: opening the door, sit down at the desk and hold a conversation with someone. Next time when I start filming a film or trailer I need to make sure that I don’t do the exactly same mistake and it will turn out better than before.
