CHAPTER 1: TIME TRAVEL

Rachel and Bob are cousins. They are visiting their grandparents. It’s summertime and they haven’t seen each other since their last holiday. Bob tells Rachel that he knows how to travel through the Internet to a time long ago.

“How can you get to a time that’s already happened?” asked Rachel.

“I don’t know,” said Bob. “I think it must be some kind of magic. Let’s go to the computer and find out.”

Rachel and Bob ran upstairs to the computer where Bob typed:

TIME TRAVEL

The computer asked: “What do you want to see?”

“Let’s say ‘dinosaurs’,” suggested Rachel.

“I’d like to see tyrannosaurus rex,” added Bob.

“That’d be a blast!” agreed Rachel.

Bob typed: dinosaurs.

In a flash the screen highlighted the periods of the prehistoric times.

“Look at that!” exclaimed Bob. “When did tyrannosaurus rex live on our planet?

“I think it was during Jurassic times,” said Rachel.

“I think so too,” said Bob.

“That was a big time for dinosaurs on Earth, wasn’t it?

“Yes, I think it was,” agreed Rachel.

“They were huge meat eating predators, weren’t they?” added Bob.

“They were!” said Rachel. “It could be dangerous there.”

“Last time we met Tempus the Wizard,” explained Bob. “He protected us with his magic sword.”

“Will Tempus be in the Jurassic Period too?

“I think so, he’s a time traveler,” answered Bob.

“Okay then. Let’s try the Jurassic Period and see what happens,” said Rachel. “I don’t believe this! It’s probably a trick.”

“It worked last time,” Bob assured her.

Rachel pointed the mouse to “Jurassic Period” and clicked.

“It takes a few minutes,” said Bob.

“I feel sort of strange,” whispered Rachel.

“You’re disappearing!” exclaimed Bob.

“So are you! Where are your legs?” cried Rachel.

“It isn’t a trick. It’s working!”

“What about your legs?” asked Rachel.

“It’ll be okay. You’ll see,” shouted Bob as he disappeared.

CHAPTER 1 TIME TRAVEL EXERCISE 1: Scientists have divided the history of the Earth into time periods. They have given each period a name. You can see some of the period names and the things that lived during each period on the chart. How do scientists know when these plants and animals lived? They dig to find bones that have turned to stone. They are called fossils. How do they know their age? They have tests that tell their age.

1. Study the chart and circle 10 things that you would want to see if you could travel back in time.

2. Which period has the most circles? _____________________________

EXERCISE 3: Read below to find the words you will need to complete the puzzle.

When Bob and Rachel went to their computer screen they found the names of some of the periods of prehistoric times. These are the history of our Earth before there was any writing. They decided to visit the Jurassic period when dangerous predators lived on Earth. Bob told Rachel that the wizard, Tempus, would probably meet them and protect them with his sword. After they clicked on the Jurassic Period, Rachel saw Bob’s legs disappear! What would they see? Would there be turtles, lizards, bees, birds or roses?

PREHISTORIC VISITS: THE JURASSIC TIMES Teachers’ notes: The Jurassic era was a time of great change on earth. The climate was warm and wet. Reptiles dominated on land, in the rivers and lakes, in the seas and even in the air. Although reptiles are considered to be cold blooded, there is some evidence that is leading scientists to believe that there were at least some species that were warm blooded. There is also some speculation about a combination of warm and cold blooded systems in the same animal. Some of the incredibly large herbivores must have derived a great deal of heat from the rotting vegetation in their stomachs, so in that sense they were partly warm blooded. Prior to this time period, all of the land masses of the earth were together in a super continent named Pangāea. During the Jurassic era, this land mass started to split apart and form massive inland seas, that were home to bizarre forms of marine life. All of the forms of life used in this book are from the Jurassic period about 208 million years ago. Although some of the fossil finds of creatures used in this book were found in very different parts of the world, from as far away as Canada and China, they all were living on the huge continent of Pangaea. EXERCISE 2 Page 2: 1. Write a sentence that names the ones you have seen. I have seen a ________________________________________. 2. Do you think any of these are dangerous? Some kinds of lizards might be dangerous. 3. Would any of them try to eat you? No, none of them would try to eat me. 4. Which ones would you want to eat? I would want to eat some fish and some birds. 5. Which ones can fly? Birds can fly. 6. Which ones are plants? Ferns and roses are plants. 7. Which ones have tails? Fish, birds, dragonflies and lizards have tails. 8. Which ones can swim? Fish, lizards and some birds can swim. EXERCISE 3 Page 3:
