The 14" lathes have just the right amountof engineering to afford simplicity ofoperation, coupled with plain and simplerugged reliability. In addition, built insafety features like the safety clutch inthe apron that kicks out the feed and thefeed/threading safety interlock eliminatingthe simultaneous engagement of thefeed and threading motion, place thesemachines in a field of their own— unparalleled in performance.

A few of the outstanding features of the14" lathes are a cross ribbed headstockfor added strength and stability, withanti-friction mounted shafts and dynami-cally balanced components; hardenedand ground alloy steel gears, shafts andsplines, and an oversized precisionchrome alloy spindle with a big 2-1/4"thru hole that is mounted in double rowangular contact thrust bearings and 2double row roller bearings. These largespindle bearings give the 14" greaterradial and thrust capacities ensuringvery precise turning capabilities.

Available in 40" and 60" center dis-tances, the 14" lathes have 14-1/2"swing over the bed, 9" swing over thecross slide, and 18-3/4" swing in thegap. They also feature hardened andprecision ground bedways on a heavyone-piece closed grain cast bed that isfully ribbed for maximum stability andeven thermal expansion. Standard onevery machine is a quick-change gear-box for cutting Metric, Module andDiametral Pitch threads as well as stan-dard American threads.

“Thru Hole”Spindle is precision machined, hardened and ground from amassive one-piece forging. Itfeatures a full 2-1/4" thru hole,enabling large work pieces tobe introduced without exces-sive overhang. The spindle ismounted in precision angularcontact thrust bearings foraccuracy and smooth running,and is supported by largediameter precision roller bear-ings for stability. Chuckmounting is standard D1-6camlock and a reductionsleeve is provided to facilitateuse of Morse taper tooling.

HeadstockFully geared headstock providessixteen (16) spindle speedsthrough precise, hardened andground gears. Each gear isthoroughly tested for accuratetooth configuration and flankengagement to assure optimumquiet and smooth running, andis precision fitted on hardenedand ground splined shafts forease of speed selection. Allshafts are mounted in ball ortapered roller bearings.Spindle drive is achievedthrough mechanical “multi-disc”clutches for forward, andreverse rotation.

CarriageCarriage assembly featuresextended cross slide for accommodation of special tooling,tracer attachments, etc. The crossslide is constructed of high qualitycast iron and incorporates exter-nally adjustable nuts to provide forbacklash elimination. The rugged,heavy duty taper attachment iscapable of generating tapers of ±10degrees up to 11 inches long and isgraduated in degrees for conven-ience of operation.

Norton Control BoxTotally enclosed, quick change feedgearbox allows easy selection ofmost standard and metric threadsand feeds without use of changegears. All gears and splined shaftsare of hardened and ground alloysteel, precision fitted for ease ofshifting and mounted in high preci-sion anti-friction bearings. The feedgearbox assembly is oil bath lubri-cated for smooth operation andquiet running.

BedwayThe bed is constructed of highgrade, alloyed cast iron, normal-ized and aged to achieve maxi-mum stability. The design features heavy cross ribbing for rigidity and vibrationdampening and utilizes hardenedand ground, bedways. The bed-way design is of the double vee,60 degree opposed style (mostcommonly described as the“LeBlond Profile”), affordingextended accuracy and longmachine life.
