INDUSTRY NEWS
GG Refinery Limited (G2R™) is proud to announce the award of Tanzania’s first Gold Refining License (RFL 001/2019), by the Tanzania Ministry of Minerals (Mining Commission) on the 16th of July 2019. Tanzania is recognized as one of the major producers of gold in Africa. The establishment of the first modern refinery in the country facilitates the Government’s plan to promote and enable value-added activities within the gold mining industry. This endeavor is designed to increase revenue and jobs as well as promote new technologies to realize maximum benefits from the mineral sector. G2R will build a 3,500 square-meter modern state-of-the-art facility located on 20+ hectares in the city of Geita. This is a highly strategic location within Tanzania’s Great Lakes region which produces 95% of the gold resources in the country. Working in support of the Government’s recently established regional mineral trading centers, along with small-scale miners, dealers and major large-scale mining operators, the refinery will serve as the main focal point to the industry ranging from assay, refining and minting. With an annual gold processing capability of up to 100 tons and a target purity of 99.99 percent (also known as 999.9 fineness or “Four-Nine Gold”), the refinery is designed to the highest international standards for certification by the relevant authorities. Issues involving environmental controls, along with worker health and safety, will be conducted and monitored to the highest industrial “best practices” standards. The refinery also has an integrated minting operation which will have the ability to fabricate a variety of bullion grade products, including the production of internationally recognized and marketed ingots, such as kilo-bars and 400 troy-ounce bars. Advanced minting operations will be implemented to produce internationally marketed numismatic and commemorative coins that will highlight Tanzanian’s unique natural wonders, wildlife, history and culture. The facility will also house an integrated bullion depository complete with a 50-tonne UL certified Class-3 vault (the highest rating in the industry), which will be amongst the largest secure depositories on the continent. G2R is proud to have a strong alliance with Azania Bank, a Tanzanian Commercial Bank. Azania will also have a presence at the refinery in an effort to provide greater accessibility to financial services within the regional mining sector.
GG Refinery Ltd. Awarded Gold Refining License by Tanzania
With a majority of ownership in the company held by Tanzanian citizens, the refinery understands and strongly supports the national agenda of industrialization. The G2R Refinery and its senior management maintain professional affiliations with several international industry related organizations. These include the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI) and the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME). Our mission is to increase public and international confidence in Tanzania’s mining and mineral sectors. The refinery will also play a large role in the elimination of illegally exported gold out of the country by producing an internationally recognizable hallmarked gold ingot complete with tracking and serial numbers. Auditable documentation will allow police and customs officials rapidly identify, verify and track authorized gold for export. Several new security technologies will also be implemented that will make it practically impossible to counterfeit or bypass the additional confidential safeguards. The refinery will strongly support international and regional efforts regarding supply chain due-diligence and will be a leader amongst the industry in both complying and setting the highest possible standards for anti-money laundering and other areas of concern to ensure that the refinery production remains conflict-free. Site preparation, infrastructure development and equipment fabrication is already underway and it is expected to be fully functional by the end of first quarter 2020.
