November 22, 2017 Good Evening Community,

CYBER MONDAY SAFETY TIPS

1. Stick to Secure Websites

Only submit your card details or sensitive information to secure websites. These websites ensure a safe, encrypted channel for a

website to transfer data to a browser, and vice versa. They also verify the identity of each party - the vendor and consumer - and

guarantee that your data will not be intercepted. To be sure you are using a secure website, check for a small padlock symbol in

the address bar. The web address will also begin with "[https://:]https://:" (the s stands for 'secure').

2. Don't Shop on Unsecured Wi-Fi Hotspots

Free public Wi-Fi networks can often be found in coffee shops, restaurants and airports. While these hotspots are handy, they

should be used cautiously, especially when it comes to accessing personal information. Unsecured Wi-Fi networks don't require

passwords and can be easily hacked by thieves who can gather all of the sites you accessed while on the network and all of the

personal information you entered there.

3. Don't Fall for "Too-Good-To-Be-True" Offers

You may be on the prowl for great Cyber Monday deals but if it looks too good to be true, it's best to assume it is. Identity

thieves and cybercriminals are known to prey on bargain hunters this time of year. Watch out especially for email and text

messages promising unreal deals. By clicking on links within these messages, you could be leaving your device vulnerable

phishing software or malware. 4. Update Your Anti-Virus Software

Keeping Anti-virus and anti-phishing tools on all computers can help you to detect and remove viruses and keyloggers that can

steal your personal and financial information. Updating these systems regularly will help you to protect your devices from the

latest viruses and will help to cover any upgrades you may have made within your operating system.

5. Check for Fraudulent Apps

Shopping on your phone or tablet? Look twice before you download an app. In 2016 alone, hundreds of fake retail and product

apps were reported in the Apple App Store in the weeks leading up to the holidays. Oftentimes, these counterfeit apps look

strikingly similar to those belonging to popular retail chain stores and luxury-goods makers.

While many of them may be relatively harmless knockoff apps that serve for popup ads, accidentally entering any card or

personal information can lead to potential fraud.

6. Set Up Personal Banking Account Alerts

While there may always be some risk to shopping online, keeping an eye on your accounts is one of the best ways to spot and

report potential fraud as early as possible, potentially saving you time and money. Alerts to can be set-up to send you an email,

pop up as notifications on your smart phone or even set up automatic phone calls from your bank to alert you to any account

activity you may choose to be alerted to. Just call up your banks customer service number or stop in to your bank branch to

inquire on how to set up alerts.

Dear Community;

Yesterday was a painful day for us New Yorkers, a terrorist act was committed against innocent people in lower

scheduled events will go on as usual. The 70th Precinct along with all precincts around the city are fully

Public safety is a shared responsibility and we ask you to be aware of your surroundings and to never become

complacent, and to dial 911 or flag down a police car if you see, hear, or feel something that makes you feel

uncomfortable. We will continue to always be vigilant as we patrol this community. We care about your

safety.

Police Commissioner O’Neill reminds us that the goal of terrorist is to promote hate and divisiveness. But what

we’ve seen here, instead, is that these acts simply strengthen the resolve of New Yorkers and, in fact, all

Americans. And by working with you and all our neighborhoods, we will continue to do what we do best, and

May 10, 2017 – Technology Safety Tips

Good Afternoon Community;

Are you careful with your mobile phone?

Electronic devices are attractive targets for thieves due to their high resale value. Electronics such as iPhones, iPods, Android

devices and Mobile Phones as well as Nooks and Kindles are the most common types of stolen property in New York City –

even more than currency! Mobile Phones alone account for 81% of all electronic device thefts. In order to protect yourself from

being a victim, please follow the tips below:

1. Keep personal electronics out of site while walking in public.

2. If you must use your phone while walking; avoid becoming distracted by your conversation.

3. Be aware of your surroundings. If someone looks suspicious or is following you, walk into a store/business to avoid

individual.

4. If you must travel at night, attempt to travel with others.

5. When walking to and from home, avoid short cuts. Stick to main streets, where there is a lot of pedestrian traffic.

6. Never loan your phone to a stranger. In case of an emergency, offer to make the call for them.

7. Consider using hands-free technology.

Always Remain alert and stay aware of your surroundings when using your device, don’t leave your device unattended and

always use the security features of your phone (pin lock, find my iPhone etc..) For more information on preventing theft, or for

April 25, 2017 – School Bus Advisory

Good Evening Community;

The New York City Police Department will be enforcing the law when it comes to school buses. New York State

transports 2.3 million children with more than 50, 000 school buses to school every year. School buses are most likely to be on

the road during a three hour window in the morning and a three hour window in the afternoon. These three hour windows are

scheduled where, for the most part, they are at the same location at about the same time each school day. School buses are

noted for typically traveling at lower rates of speed and making frequent stops.

When a school bus is preparing to stop, the driver will activate the yellow flashing lights at approximately 300 feet before the

stop. At the stop, the vehicle will be put into neutral or park with the parking brake set to open the door and activate the red

flashing lights with the stop arm/stop sign being extended and flashing. New York State law requires motorists to stop for

school buses that are receiving or discharging passengers.

The driver of the vehicle must stop when they encounter a school bus in the process of loading or unloading students:

- On a public highway

- On multiple lane roads

- On opposite sides of divided highways

- On a public street

- On a private road

- In a parking lot

- On school property

The driver of the vehicle must stop from either direction. The driver must also stop if the school bus has another bus in front of

it to receive or discharge passengers.

Tips for sharing the road with school buses

1. Remember buses make frequent stops.

2. Never pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing on the right or left.

3. By law school buses are required to stop at railroad crossings.

OCTOBER 28, 2016

Good Afternoon Community:

Halloween is this Monday, October 31 and we want you to remember that Halloween is one of the most enjoyable days of the

year for children, but parents should be aware of the potential risks that can affect children who are not supervised properly.

The following Safety tips are for parents and guardians:

- An adult should always examine Halloween treats before children eat them. Never eat open or unwrapped

Halloween foods.

- Costumes should be flame-retardant and should allow children to walk freely without tripping. Children’s ability to

see, hear and move should not be impaired by unwieldy masks.

- Make certain that any face paint or make-up used on skin or costumes is non-toxic.

- Extra care should be taken on streets and at crossings, especially at dusk and after dark.

- Children should carry a flashlight and wear reflective or bright colored clothing at night.

- Emergency identification information’s should be placed discreetly inside clothing of small children, in case of

accidental separation.

- Avoid having children wear their names outwardly on clothing or jewelry which may allow a stranger to call them by

name and appear to know them.

- As always, children should be cautioned to avoid strangers, as well as poorly-lit areas and homes of people they do

not know.

- Halloween treats should only be consumed if they are packaged appropriately. Parents can help protect their

children by making sure that treats are wrapped in their original, unbroken packages. No loose candy, open glasses or

bottles, fresh fruit, or homemade goods.

- If after eating a Halloween treat there is evidence that it may have been tampered with, or it has a strange taste, or if

a child feels sick, parents or guardians can call the NYC health Department’s Poison Control Center. The Poison

Control Center is open 24 hours a day at (212) Poisons 764-7667. Overall; enjoy & have a Safe Halloween.

Good Afternoon Community;

Halloween is one of the most enjoyable days of the year for children, but parents should be aware of the potential risks that

can affect children who are not supervised properly. Trick-or-treaters should always have adult supervision, even if they are

traveling with a group of friends, to ensure that the only scary experiences children have are those associated with the spirit of

Halloween.

The 70th Precinct will be at fully staffed and here for your needs.

Halloween Safety Tips:

• Children should wear flame resistant costumes that allow them to move their arms and walk freely without tripping.

Masks should not prevent a child from seeing or hearing and makeup used in face painting should be non-toxic. Use flexible

props, such as foam rather than plastic to avoid children from accidentally hurting one another.

• Children who trick-or-treat at night should carry a flashlight and wear reflective or light-colored clothing and costumes.

Using reflective tape is also an option.

• Be aware of your surroundings at all times; be familiar with the neighborhood you plan on visiting. Practice street

safety: be sure to be alert when crossing the street, avoid looking down at cellphones.

• Avoid poorly-lit areas and homes of people you do not know.

• Travel in groups. Remember there is safety in numbers (At least 1 adult).

• Avoid displaying your valuables or electronic devices. Thieves will use this holiday to hide behind a mask to commit

crimes.

• Place emergency identification information discreetly inside clothing of small children, in case of accidental separation.

• Halloween treats should only be consumed if they are packaged appropriately in their original, unopened packages.

Avoid homemade or unpackaged treats.

• Remember to utilize 911 for all emergencies, and 311 for non-emergency situations.

Heavy rain will continue until tomorrow evening causing treacherous road conditions. Please drive cautiously by being aware

of pedestrians and other vehicles. Urban flooding is possible in low lying and poorly drained areas. Please prepare for power

outages and keep the following safety tips in mind:

• Develop a plan with your household members that outlines what to do, how to find each other, and how to

communicate if a hurricane strikes.

• Stay alert to weather reports and conditions over the next few days and pay attention to any instructions from local

authorities.

• Keep emergency contact numbers with you.

• Close and lock windows and doors.

• Prepare a "GO BAG." (Important must take items)

• Keep on hand non-perishable food which can be eaten without cooking.

• Check flashlights or other emergency lights to make sure they are in working condition, and an ample supply of

functional batteries.

• Keep a battery operated radio on hand.

Good Morning Community;

Crime control has been our main concern here at the 70th Precinct, and when working in collaboration with you, we reduce

crime in the community. Below are very important safety tips that we want you to follow and pass on to your neighbors.

Robbery Tips While walking outside we want you to be very observant of your surroundings. Don’t carry your iPad, cell phone or other

electrical devices out in the open. Don’t carry large amounts of cash if you don’t have to. If you are robbed, don’t be a hero.

Let the robber have your property and try to remember what the robber looks like. Remember sex, race, skin coloring, age,

height & weight, clothing, voices, scars, tattoos and nicknames used. This can prevent a robbery or help us catch the

perpetrator.

Car Break-Ins

Don't leave wallets, cell phones, laptops, credit cards or any other valuables in your vehicle visible once you park your car or

truck. Thieves are always looking for the opportunity to remove your personal belongings.

Bicycle Safety

Remember that bicycles are subject to the same traffic rules and regulations as a motor vehicle. The city has expanded bike

lanes into all five boroughs and maps that can assist you in planning a bike trip around the city are available online by clicking

the following link: Bike Maps. Be sure to secure your bike to a fixed object. Parking meters and scaffolding are not

recommended. Ideally an anchored bicycle rack is the best option. Be sure to remove any accessories, and for longer term

storage consider anchoring or locking the seat. Removable wheels are recommended as well. To be vigilant and to combat any

rise of bicycle thefts our Crime Prevention Officer coordinates Operation Identification Bike registration at our precinct.

Contact Officer Batson at 718-851-5506

Law Enforcement Explorers Program

Law Enforcement Explorers is a program designed to educate young men and women, ages 14-20, about law enforcement. A

uniformed member of the service in our precinct acts as the on-site Post Advisor for the Explorer Program. The program

focuses on six areas: career, service, leadership, social, fitness and outdoors. The Explorers Program encourages young people

Good Afternoon Community;

We would like to wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday this week. Please remember if you’re going away, make

sure your home is secure. Below is a list of burglary tips that you should follow:

Burglary Prevention Tips:

• Do not allow your mail to pile up in your mailbox or in front of your house: Burglars check for old, uncollected mail as

one of the key indicators for an unoccupied residence. (Have the USPS hold your mail, or have a friend, family member or

trusted neighbor collect your mail while you are away.)

• Home Security Systems & Surveillance Cameras: Have an accredited Home Security System installed, along with visible

surveillance cameras, if feasible. Display the Alarm Company’s sign and affix stickers to your doors & windows

• Make your home look active: Use lights, radios, televisions, etc. set up with timers, if feasible, to keep up the appearance

that people are home. (Burglars DO NOT want to interact with people. They simply move on to another house.)

• Make sure your neighbors are aware that you are going to be away. Inform your neighbors when you are leaving and

when you are going to return. Inform your neighbors if you have scheduled for anyone to come to your home during your

absence, when they are coming, why they are coming, and who they are. (Remind your neighbors NOT to tell anyone that you

are gone, if someone should inquire.)

• Do not ignore people you do not know in your neighborhood. Burglars often times visit different houses in neighborhoods

they are canvassing, to verify if anyone is home at the targeted residence. (People showing up, ringing door bells, knocking on

doors, asking if someone is home that does not live there or mistakenly on the “wrong block” or at the “wrong address”. Often

times Burglars will commit their crimes in “work style” clothing. Ex: Carhart clothing, utility company style uniforms, wear

tool belts, etc. Burglars commit their crimes with a certain amount of ease, walk onto the property casually, and act like they are

supposed to be there.)

In light of the recent tragedy where a fire took 7 lives, it is advisable that everyone take precaution to make sure they have

working smoke alarms in their home. There should be a fire alarm on each floor of your home; make sure to check the batteries

in case they need changing.

FEBRUARY 20, 2015: Cold Weather Safety Tips

NEW YORK CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

70th

PRECINCT

BROOKLYN

NEW YORK

Good Afternoon Community;

The New York City Office of Emergency Management today issued a weather alert for dangerously cold temperatures

Friday night, followed by a wintry mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain Saturday through Sunday, February 22, 2015.

Temperatures Friday night will be dangerously cold with lows around 10 degrees and wind chills near 5 degrees. High

temperatures Saturday are expected to be around 32 degrees, with wind chills between zero and 10 degrees. Light snow will

begin late Saturday morning and become heavier throughout the day, with the heaviest snow expected between 4:00 PM and

7:00PM Saturday. Snow will transition to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain Saturday evening into Sunday morning. As

temperatures increase, the freezing rain will transition to rain by daybreak Sunday, and will taper off by mid-Sunday afternoon.

High temperatures Sunday are expected to be around 40 degrees, with wind chills between 20 and 25 degrees. A total of 2- 4

inches of snow and one-tenth of an inch of ice is expected with this event. New Yorkers are asked to exercise caution during the

period of extreme cold weather, and be prepared for slippery conditions, as freezing rain could cause for icy conditions Sunday.

Treating Roadways and Snow Preparation

The NYC Department of Sanitation has issued a snow alert for Saturday, February 21, 2015 and is pre-deploying 424

salt spreaders across the five boroughs to treat arterial highways, bus routes, school streets, hilly roads, etc. In addition, DSNY

will have 1600 plows available in anticipation of any plowing needs (more than 2 inches of accumulation). Sanitation workers

will be assigned to two 12-hour shifts.

The Department of Transportation will deploy anti-icing units to each of the East River bridges and is pre-treating

pedestrian overpasses and step streets. Alternate Side Parking rules are suspended Friday, February 20 and Saturday, February

21. Parking meters remain in effect throughout the city.

Cold Weather Safety

New Yorkers are advised to check on their neighbors, friends, and relatives ― especially the elderly and those with

disabilities and access and functional needs. People most likely to be exposed to dangerous cold include those who lack shelter,

work outdoors and/or live in homes with malfunctioning or inadequate heat. Seniors, infants, people with chronic

cardiovascular or lung conditions, people using alcohol or drugs and people with cognitive impairments such as from dementia,

serious mental illness or developmental disability are at increased risk.

Safety Tips

New Yorkers are also encouraged to take the following precautions:

· Stay indoors as much as possible.

· Prolonged exposure to extreme cold weather can be dangerous. If you suspect a person is suffering from frostbite or

hypothermia, call 911 to get medical help. While waiting for assistance, help the person by getting them to a warm place if

possible, removing any damp clothing and covering them with warm blankets.

· When outdoors, wear warm clothing and cover exposed skin. Use multiple layers to maintain warmth. Wear a hat,

hood, or scarf, as most heat is lost through the head. Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go outside.

· Keep clothing dry; if a layer becomes wet, remove it.

· Wear sturdy boots that provide traction to reduce slipping. Use handrails when using stairs.

NEW YORK CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

70th

PRECINCT

BROOKLYN

NEW YORK

· Exercise caution and avoid slippery surfaces; some ice may not be visible. Have heightened awareness of cars,

particularly when approaching or crossing intersections. Seniors should take extra care outdoors to avoid slips and falls from icy

conditions.

· Shivering is an important first sign that the body is losing heat. Shivering is a signal to return indoors.

· Drinking alcohol may make you think you feel warmer but actually increases your chances of hypothermia and

frostbite.

· Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart. If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, follow your doctor’s

advice about shoveling snow or performing other hard work in the cold. Remember, your body is already working hard just to

stay want, so don’t overdo it.

· Workers in construction and utilities, and others who spend a lot of time outdoors are at risk for cold-related

disorders. Employers should implement safe work practices, provide appropriate protective equipment, and train workers on

health effects of cold weather, proper prevention techniques, and treatment of cold-related disorders.

For Motorists

· Drive slowly. Posted speed limits are for ideal weather conditions. Vehicles take longer to stop on snow and ice than

on dry pavement.

· Use major streets or highways for travel whenever possible; these roadways will be cleared first.

· Four-wheel drive vehicles may make it easier to drive on snow-covered roads, but they do not stop quicker than other

vehicles.

· Keep the name and phone number of at least one local towing service in your car in case you break down or become

stuck in snow.

·If you get stuck on the road, stay with your car and contact a towing company.

Heating Tips

· Report any loss of heat or hot water to property managers immediately, and call 311.

· Never use a gas stove to heat your home. Carbon Monoxide is colorless and odorless and overtime will build-up in

your blood causing symptoms that can easily be mistaken for the flu – headaches, fatigue, nausea and drowsiness. Sometimes

your pets will show symptoms first. If more than one person in your family is showing symptoms, call 911.

· Never use a kerosene or propane space heater, charcoal or gas grill, or generator indoors or near the home.

· Electric space heaters are the only kind of space heater legal in New York City and should turn off automatically

when tipped over, and should be kept far from combustible and flammable objects, as well as water.

JANUARY 2015

Good Afternoon Community;

Crime control has been our main concern here at the 70th Precinct, and when working in collaboration with you, we reduced

crime in the community. Most crimes are committed because of opportunity, so we need to eliminate any chance of a criminal

having easy access to your personal items. Below are very important safety tips that we want you to follow and pass on to your

neighbors.

ROBBERY PREVENTION

Four ways to increase your personal safety are:

1. Reduce or eliminate opportunities that may make you a target.

2. Increase awareness in places you're most comfortable.

3. Trust your instincts regardless of feeling embarrassed.

4. Prepare your schedule daily with safety in mind.

PURSE/WALLET SAFETY

- Carry purses, portfolios or briefcases in a manner that will allow you to let go. Straps placed across your shoulder,

around your neck or wrapped around your waist have caused injuries because women could not free themselves during

a purse snatch.

- Always be aware of your surroundings and carry your pocketbook clasp toward you, close to your body, tucked in the

bend of your elbow as if it were a football. If there is a long strap, wrap it around the bag.

- If someone attempts to snatch your pocket book, let go of it, especially if there is a weapon involved. When dining out,

the only place for your purse should be your lap. The back of a chair is an easy target for a thief. Never carry a wallet

in a rear pocket; use a front trouser or an inside coat pocket.

- Be particularly aware of your purse/wallet in crowded situations, such as rush-hour trains and buses. If you are jostled

in a crowd, be aware that a pickpocket might be responsible. Beware of arguments or commotions designed to distract

you while your pocket or purse is being picked.

- Minimize the amount of money, credit cards and valuables you carry by only taking items that are necessary for the

day. Divide money between your purse/wallet and pockets. Carry your keys on your person separate from your

identification.

WALKING - BE STREET SMART

- Use well-populated and well-lit streets.

- If you suspect you're being followed, stay away from deserted blocks and head for an area where there are people or to

the nearest open store.

- If you're driven home, ask the driver to wait until you are safely inside.

- Should a motorist bother you while you are walking, reverse your direction. If you are still followed, seek a safe

location and yell for help, if possible.

NEW YORK CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

70th

PRECINCT

BROOKLYN

NEW YORK

WHILE DRIVING

- Upon approaching your car, look to make sure no one is hiding in or around the vehicle, especially in the back seat.

- Check your tires for flats. Keep windows rolled up, except for a small opening for ventilation and keep the doors

locked at all times.

- Keep valuables secured in the trunk, not lying on the seat next to you.

- Put your purse on the floor of your car.

- Plan your route before you leave. Displaying a map will send a message that you're unfamiliar with the area.

- When stopped in traffic, always leave enough space between your car and the one in front of you. This will allow you

to pass easily, if necessary. Keep your car well maintained and the gas tank at least half full to avoid getting stranded.

- Should you suspect that you are being followed, make several turns down active streets. If the vehicle continues to

follow, head for the nearest police station, fire house, or open store. Avoid driving to your home.

- If someone attempts to force you off the road, remain calm and blow your horn continuously to attract attention. If

forced off the road, stop, put your car in reverse and back away.

WHEN PARKING YOUR VEHICLE

- Park in a well-lit area to discourage a personal attack and reduce the risk of your car being stolen.

- Look around before exiting your car. Close all windows and lock the doors. Take any valuables with you.

AT HOME

- Have your keys ready before you get to the door.

- Make sure your entrance area is well lit.

- If you live in an apartment, close the lobby door behind you, especially if a stranger is approaching.

- Make all visitors and delivery persons use the door bell.

- Place your name on the inside of the mailbox where only the mail-carrier will see it. If a name must be on the outside,

use only the last name, e.g., the Smiths.

- When recording an outgoing message on your answering machine, avoid leaving your name, phone number or a

message that you're not at home. A good message is, "We are unable to answer the phone, please leave a message."

Say it confidently.

- If a stranger asks to use the phone, keep your door locked and tell them you will place the call for them. If there is an

emergency, call 9-1-1. Keep him/her out of your home.

- Should you arrive home and find signs of a burglary, STAY OUT. Call 9-1-1 from a pay phone or a neighbor's house.

Wait there for the police to arrive.

ELEVATOR - When waiting for an elevator, leave the lobby/hallway if someone makes you feel uncomfortable.

- Check the elevator's mirror before entering.

- Stand between the control panel and door when in the elevator.

- Exit the elevator if someone enters that makes you feel uneasy. If you feel the need to give an excuse, you can say,

"Oh, I forgot my mail." If accosted, press as many buttons as possible to get the elevator to stop at the next floor.

SUBWAY AND BUS

- Use entrances marked by a green indicator, where there is a clerk present 24 hours a day.

- Have your money or metro card available.

- Use designated waiting areas during off-peak hours.

- Ride in the conductor's car during off-peak hours.

- Sit in the center of the car, away from the door, to avoid a purse or chain snatch.

- Cover jewelry; turn stone rings toward the palm side of your hand.

- Stay awake and aware and exit with the crowd. Wait and walk close to the wall.

- Wait for the bus on the sidewalk away from the curb. Sit near the front of the bus.

- Be aware of your wallet/purse to avoid a pickpocket.

ATM

- Be aware of suspicious people near the entrance.

- Use well-lit, well-populated ATM's.

- Avoid ATM's that have unlocked doors or are directly out on the street.

- Block a bystander's view when doing your transaction.

- Use mirrors, positioned at the ATM, to see behind you.

- Put your money away and take your card and receipt before exiting an ATM. Your card is exclusively for your entry

only. Make sure the door closes behind you.

OCTOBER 29, 2014

Hello Community,

Halloween is this Friday, October 31st and we want you to remember that Halloween is one of the most enjoyable days of the

year for children, but parents should be aware of the potential risks that can affect children who are not supervised properly.

Trick-or-treaters should always have adult supervision, even if their traveling in a group of friends.

Parents can help protect their

children by making sure that treats are wrapped in their original, unbroken packages-No loose candy, open glasses or

bottles, fresh fruit, or homemade goods.

- If after eating a Halloween treat there is evidence that it may have been tampered with, or it has a strange taste, or if

a child feels sick, parents or guardians can call the NYC health Department’s Poison Control Center. The Poison

Hello Community,

We would like to inform you that Mayor Bill de Blasio has made a commitment to decisively confront the epidemic of

traffic fatalities and injuries on our streets. Vision Zero was put into action to combat death and injury on city streets. The

Mayor no longer wants to regard serious crashes as inevitable. Tragedies happen in every community in our city, to families

from every walk of life, people who drive and to those who bike, but overwhelmingly, the deadly toll is highest for pedestrians-

especially our children and seniors.

For a Safer New York City, the speed limit is changing to 25 MPH

throughout the city starting on November 7th, 2014.

Drivers who drive 25 MPH or slower are better able to avoid crashes. Pedestrians who are struck by vehicles traveling

at 25 MPH are half as likely to die as pedestrians who are struck by vehicles at 30 MPH. Crashes are Preventable. Together We

Can Save Lives.

Hotel Checking Credit Card Scam

This is something to be aware of. We all use hotels...thought you should read this ... Creativity wow. This is one of the best

scams I’ve heard about. You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk. Typically when checking in, you give the front

desk your credit card (for any charges to your room). You go to your room and settle in. All is good.

The hotel receives a call and the caller asks for (as an example) room 620 - which happens to be your room. The phone rings in

your room. You answer and the person on the other end says the following: This is the front desk. When checking in, we came

across a problem with your charge card information. Please re-read me your credit card numbers and verify the last 3 digits

numbers at the reverse side of your charge card.

Not thinking anything wrong, since the call seems to come from the front desk you oblige. But actually, it is a scam by someone

calling from outside the hotel. They have asked for a random room number, then ask you for your credit card and address

information. They sound so professional, that you think you are talking to the front desk.

If you ever encounter this scenario on your travels, tell the caller that you will be down to the front desk to clear up any

problems. Then, go to the front desk or call directly and ask if there was a problem. If there was none, inform the manager of

the hotel that someone tried to scam you of your credit card information, acting like a front desk employee.

ANYONE travelling should be aware of this one!

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014 NEWSLETTER Good Evening Community,

As a reminder to you, this Sunday, March 9th, is daylight savings time. Please remember to turn your clocks 1 hour ahead as

well as to check your batteries in your home smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to assure battery life. As spring approaches,

the community tends to spend longer hours outdoors, meaning an increase in people on the street. So as a reminder please

follow these safety tips.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY TIPS

• Do not use cell phone or other electronic device while you cross the street.

• Always be alert, don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes and ears off the road.

• Walk on sidewalks. If you must walk in the street, walk facing traffic. Stop at the curb before entering the street.

• Cross only at street corners, preferably those with a traffic light and within marked crosswalks.

• Pay attention to "Walk/Don't Walk" signals.

• Give yourself the most time to cross by waiting for a newly turned green or walk signal.

• Look left, right and left again before crossing the street, and be on the lookout for turning or backing vehicles.

• Keep scanning for vehicles as you cross.

• Hold your hand up or do whatever it takes to make yourself more visible to drivers.

• Make eye contact with the driver before crossing in front of a vehicle. Stay out of the driver's blind spot.

• Walk and cross with other pedestrians wherever possible.

• Listen for the engine noises of backing vehicles when you're in a parking lot, near a driveway or crossing

mid-block between cars.

• Wear light or bright-colored or reflective clothing, especially if you walk at night.

• Use a flashlight if you walk at night.

• When you walk with younger children, make sure you hold their hands and keep them in your eye sight.

JANUARY 2014 NEWSLETTER Good Afternoon Community,

As you are aware, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Alert in the New York City area today,

January 21, 2014. Expect heavy snow fall and high winds up until 6 AM Wednesday morning that will accumulate up to a foot

or more of snow. The temperature will be below freezing for the next several days. This will lead to treacherous road

conditions throughout the area. Please drive cautiously by being aware of pedestrians and other vehicles on the road. If

possible, don’t drive. Use public transportation. Alternate Side Parking is suspended today and tomorrow, but parking meters

are still in effect. Please prepare for cancellations, delays and power outages. Be kind; watch out for your elderly neighbors.

Stay safe and be warm.

Don’t let the weather deter you from good crime control strategies. Most crimes are committed because of opportunity,

so we need to eliminate any chance of a thief having easy access to our personal items. Below are very important safety tips

that we want you to follow and pass on to your neighbors.

Car Break-Ins

People are not taking the necessary precautions to protect their valuables, and often this presents a thief the opportunity

to burglarize their cars quickly and without detection. A thief looks into a car and sees some valuables and then smashes the

window, grabs your stuff and is gone. GPS systems, CDs, briefcases, prescriptions, expensive sunglasses, and even small

amounts of change are all inviting to a thief when left in plain view.

But there is an easy way to keep yourself from becoming a victim of this type of crime: Just don’t leave anything in

plain sight within your vehicle. If a would-be thief looks into your car and sees nothing, he or she will usually move on quickly

to the next vehicle. This may seem like common sense, but go ahead and glance into some cars the next time you are walking

through a parking lot. I think you will be surprised by the number and kind of valuables that you will see. In less than 30

seconds, a thief can shatter your window, reach into your car, unlock the door, and remove any valuables in sight. In about that

same amount of time, you can secure your valuables out of sight, and greatly reduce your odds of becoming a victim.

Also another tip; with the extreme cold weather we have our windows shut tight to keep out cold drafts, but this also

keeps out sound to hear a prowler on your property. If you have valuables that you leave outside your home or in your

backyard, make sure it’s out of sight and out of an intruder’s mind. Please secure your Property.

Coat Drive

The 70th Precinct is working in conjunction with New York Cares Coat Drive; we will be accepting coats at the

precinct up until February 7, 2014. Our address is 154 Lawrence Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11230. Help us keep your neighbors

warm. Thank you.

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER Greetings from the 70th Precinct,

As the holiday season gets in to full swing there are some who will look to take advantage of the season. Before

venturing out to the stores please read our tips to help ensure your holiday shopping experience is a fun and safe one!

We wish everyone a Happy Holiday.

Holiday Shopping Safety Tips...

* If visiting multiple stores, remember the trunk is not to be used as a storage compartment until your shopping is completed.

Purchases should remain with you at all times. Perpetrators are watching and waiting for your drop-off to your vehicle, and then

they enter your car and pull your trunk lever and easily remove your packages from your trunk.

* Be aware of loiterers near your vehicle. You can always return to the store and ask to be escorted if you feel uncomfortable.

* Park your vehicle in a well-lit area that is well traveled by fellow-shoppers.

* Consider using a credit card and not a debit card when you shop online. Federal law limits your liability to $50 if your credit

card is used fraudulently.

* Just carry the amount of cash you expect to use when out shopping, thieves are on the look-out for people holding large

amounts of money.

* Unfortunately, holidays are also high season for scam artists, especially “confidence artists.” A confidence trick is an attempt

to defraud a person or group after first gaining their confidence by exploiting characteristics of the human psyche. Consumers

are typically in a generous mood, and often distracted. Be wary of strangers approaching you asking for something that may

ordinarily raise suspicions. A favorite holiday scam involves someone approaching you in a parking lot with a gas can looking

to "borrow" some money for gas. Security is better equipped to handle stranded motorists.

* Cut up product boxes in to small pieces that fit in to trash or recycling bins. There is no need to advertise all the gifts that are

now in your home to everyone that passes.

Top 10 Home Security Tips for the Holidays

The days are growing shorter, twilight creeping in a little earlier. The fun starts to move inside. The holiday season has jumped

into full swing. We'll visit family, party with friends, fill the home with presents and bake delicious treats. It's a warm, cozy,

social time of year. It's also a hectic time, traveling, shopping, etc. Homes are often unoccupied. Residential crime spikes, as

burglars take advantage of the dark and of your holiday shopping. For some well-deserved peace of mind, make sure to secure

your property while you're away - even if you're only at the mall.

Use this Top 10 holiday checklist for the best home security.

1. THINK LIKE A BURGLAR: Burglars can be sneaky, so Tip #1 is to think like burglars do. So now look around and

evaluate other aspects of your home security. Are you providing an easy way in? Open vents or crawl spaces? Dog doors? Did

you leave a ladder outside? Burglars could use it, or climb a nearby tree, to get in an upstairs window.

2. LOCK YOUR DOORS & WINDOWS: The front or back door is the most common point of entry for a burglar. So Tip #2

is to lock your doors and windows. Remember to use a deadbolt. Burglars also look for unlocked ground floor windows,

especially in your side or backyard.

NEW YORK CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

70th

PRECINCT

BROOKLYN

NEW YORK

3. DON'T ADVERTISE THAT YOU'RE AWAY: Tip #3 is to not make it obvious that you are not home. Burglars look for

clues like uncollected newspapers and mail. Cancel deliveries or ask a friend to help your house looked lived-in. Even an un-

shoveled driveway says, "We're not here."

4. BE SMART WHEN IT COMES TO SOCIAL MEDIA: Social Media is now part of our lives, and is especially fun around

the holidays. But Tip #4 is: be careful about what you post! If you blast your travel schedule across the internet, everyone -

including crooks - will know you're not at home. Pass this tip onto your children.

5. BEWARE OF IDENTITY THEFT: This is a favorite time of year for fake charities to gather your key financial info, like

your SSN and credit card number, as well as your money. Tip #5 is to be on the lookout for people trying to steal your identity.

6. BE NEIGHBORLY: Neighbors can do a great job of looking out for each other. Tip #6 is to ask neighbors to keep an eye

on your home. Maybe they can even park a car in your driveway, or leave tire tracks after a fresh snowfall. Encourage

neighbors to report suspicious behavior.

7. LIGHT IT UP: Darkness is a burglar's friend. So Tip #7 is light it up. Exterior lights (especially the motion-activated type)

are a great deterrent. Put interior lights on a timer, so they'll come on in the evening if you're away. But close your curtains. No

need to show off expensive presents under the tree. The same goes for the boxes the presents came in - fancy electronics boxes

leave a tempting message for burglars.

8. HIDE YOUR KEYS & PROTECT YOUR ADDRESS: Do you have an extra key outside? Chances are your hiding place

is more obvious than you think. Tip #8: manage your keys and key chains. Get creative when you hide a key. Don't put your

address on your key chain. If you lose that key chain, it's a personalized invitation to your home. Even the home address in your

car's GPS could give you away, if stolen. Use a nearby address instead.

9. USE YOUR ALARM & CAMERA SECURITY SYSTEMS: Alarm & Camera Security systems today can do much more

than just sound an alarm or take surveillance - some have integrated fire, smoke, carbon monoxide and flood monitoring. Tip #9

is to call your alarm company to ensure you are taking advantage of all the features offered.

10. ARM YOUR ALARM & SECURITY SYSTEM: Even the best alarm system is no help unless you use it. Tip #10 is to

remember to arm the system in "Away" mode, to engage all your sensors when you leave the house.

Car Break-Ins

In order to prevent your vehicle from being broken into, below are a few crime prevention tips; Don't leave wallets, cell

phones, lap tops, credit cards or any other valuables in your vehicle visible once you park your car or truck. Thieves are always

looking for the opportunity to remove your personal belongings.

Make sure all doors are locked; remove the circle mark caused by your suction cup if you have a GPS system. This will suggest

that an expensive electronic device is present inside your vehicle and makes it more vulnerable to be broken into. Some

criminals look at the dashboards of cars.

If they see the cigarette lighter is missing or the cover is open on the power outlet, this will suggest the possibility that it has

been taken out to accommodate a battery charger or power adapter for an electronic device. They're willing to take a chance that

the device is not far away - maybe stored in the glove box or center console. So, when they don't see a cigarette lighter in a car,

some thieves will break the passenger side window, and search your car, hoping to find some valuables inside.

Telephone Scam Alert! Beware of people calling you on the phone and asking you to wire money. Anyone is a potential victim! The target victim of

this scam is called by someone claiming to be a relative who needs bail money to get out of jail. Or they may claim your family

member has been kidnapped and will demand ransom be paid via a money transfer service such as Western Union.

Anyone calling and asking you for money MUST be considered suspicious. *If your receive a call asking you to wire money

OCTOBER 2013 NEWSLETTER Good Afternoon Community;

Halloween is this Thursday, October 31 and we want you to remember that Halloween is one of the most enjoyable days

of the year for children, but parents should be aware of the potential risks that can affect children who are not supervised

properly. Trick-or-treaters should always have adult supervision, even if their traveling in a group of friends. The following

Safety tips are for parents and guardians:

An adult should always examine Halloween treats before children eat them. Never eat open or unwrapped candy.

Costumes should be flame-retardant and should allow children to walk freely without tripping. Children’s ability to see,

hear and move should not be impaired by unwieldy masks.

Make certain that any face paint or make-up used on skin or costumes is non-toxic.

Extra care should be taken on streets and at crossings, especially at dusk and after dark.

Children should carry a flashlight and wear reflective or bright colored clothing at night.

Emergency identification information’s should be placed discreetly inside clothing of small children, in case of

accidental separation.

Avoid having children wear their names outwardly on clothing or jewelry which may allow a stranger to call them by

name and appear to know them.

As always, children should be cautioned to avoid strangers, as well as poorly-lit areas and homes of people they do not

know.

Halloween treats should only be consumed if they are packaged appropriately. Parents can help protect their children by

making sure that treats are wrapped in their original, unbroken packages. No loose candy, open glasses or bottles, fresh fruit, or

Control Center is open 24 hours a day at (212) Poisons 764-7667. Overall, enjoy & have a Safe Halloween.

Burglary Tips

- Look around your home. Review your landscape and lighting, you do not want to create an opportunity for a burglar to

gain entry through an unlit or hidden area.

- Look at your home from the curb - can you see any weaknesses? Sometimes if you think like a criminal you will see

things you would not have normally noticed.

- Garages (both attached and unattached) should be locked at all times. Detached garages have a variety of tools (and

ladders) that can be used for entry and attached garages provide a burglar a hideaway to work.

- If you are going away, use a timer for your lights to give the appearance that you are home. Be sure to stop deliveries of

papers and have a neighbor check your mail and packages. Ensure someone cares for your yard - uncut grass and built up papers

are a sure sign the home is empty.

- If you have an alarm system - USE IT! Unfortunately most homeowners become lax and do not turn the system on. It

does you no good if it is not in use.

- Lock your windows - not every burglar uses the door, and unlocked or open windows make for easy entry.

Out of sight, out of mind - keep blinds closed, or valuables out of sight from the windows. You don't want to make your home a

showcase for burglars!"

SEPTEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER Good Evening Community;

We hope everyone enjoyed their summer. We would like to thank everyone who came out to National Night Out

Against Crime, it was a great success, but now it’s time to go back to school and work, and we want you to remember these

safety tips. Share this information with your children and your community.

Some train tips…. Cell phones and other electronic devices are prime targets for thieves who remove these devices right from the victim’s

hands as the train doors close – leaving you helpless, and without your gadget! Over 70% of larcenies occur on the train and just

under 15% occur on the platform, so for your safety we ask that you try to refrain from using your electronic devices onboard

the train or station platforms. Secure your electronic devices on your person and out of plain view. Keep bags closed and

zipped/fastened shut. If you must use your device on the train, do so away from the doors and remain alert – headphones are a

signal you are probably distracted.

Register your iPhone Use the “find my iPhone” application, and keep a record of your device’s serial numbers to aid in the reporting of loss

or theft. It is important to know your phone's unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) or MEID (Mobile

Equipment Identity) number. You should take a few seconds to copy your phone's IMEI/MEID number down and email it to

yourself (or keep it in a safe place). Having the IMEI/MEID number included on a police report in the event of loss or theft

helps us better investigate the incident. While the procedure varies by phone, we have included some examples below to help

you get started. Typically devices using a SIM card (AT&T, Sprint) will have an IMEI number, while CDMA devices (Verizon)

will have an MEID number.

Dial Method: Dial * without any spaces from the keypad of your phone, the IMEI/MEID number should then display on the

screen. Please note, this will not work for all carriers and on all phones, but it is a simple quick first step you can try.

iPhones/iPads: Launch your Settings App, and tap on General. Then tap on About, and scroll down to where it shows your

IMEI/MEID number. On the newer iPhone5 this number is also engraved on the back of the case near the bottom.

Android Devices: Launch your Settings App (typically under the Menu) then tap on About the Phone, and tap on Status. This

will show your IMEI/MEID number.

Blackberry Devices: Launch your Options, then Status. This will show your IMEI/MEID number.

Remember, we are here to help, please contact our Crime Prevention Officer at (718) 851-5504 for more information on

preventing Mobile Phone theft, as well as other useful information.

Shopping Safety Tip Stores, malls and supermarkets are popular places for thieves to prowl. Shoppers often use the child seat of shopping

cart to hold their purse and other personal items and this offers an opportunity for a thief. When the shopper turns their attention

to an item on a shelf, a thief can easily move in and steal your wallet or pocketbook from the shopping cart. You only realize

your property is gone when you are at the checkout counter.

Don't create an opportunity for a thief. Don't become a victim. Next time you are using a shopping cart keep these tips in mind:

DO NOT leave your pocketbook in the shopping cart. • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

• Pay attention to people who look suspicious.

• If you suspect that someone seems to be lurking or following you around the store, alert store management.

SUMMER 2013 NEWSLETTER Greetings from the 70th Precinct; This summer we would like everyone to be safe, and keep in mind all of the important safety tips that we have provided to

you over the past months. Be assured that the 70th Precinct will have full patrol coverage for the summer and we look forward

to serving you. If you're planning on going away for the summer; please safeguard your home by following these safety tips.

DOORS Check your doors and door frame. Should they be repaired or replaced? All exterior doors should be either metal or solid core

wood (1 3/4" thick). Glass or thin wood panels, in or near the door, can be protected by installing polycarbonate glazing and

secured with one way screws.

AIR CONDITIONERS

Should be secured to the win¬dow frame to prevent from being pulled out, or pushed in.

WINDOW GATE

On the first floor or on any emergency exit window (fire escape), a gate should be one that has been approved by the New York

City Board of Standards and Appeals. (This gate is commonly known as the ''ferry" or "safety" gate and is operated by a latch

and not a padlock or combination lock).

GARAGE

Secure an attached garage as you would your dwelling, as it is an access point into your house. Other structures such as an

unattached garage, tool shed and stor¬age areas should be locked with high quality security devices that are properly installed.

LIGHTING

Illuminate the perimeter of your home, especially the door areas with enough light to see a silhouette. Lights that are too bright

will hamper viewing. Install the light fixture out of reach, and in a tamper and weather resistant housing.

SHRUBBERY

Should be cut or designed so that it does not obstruct viewing from inside or outside. Keep a clear view to provide maximum

visibility and little concealment.

POOL SAFETY

Never dive in to water less than nine feet deep. If you find a drain cover is loose, broken or missing, notify the owner or

operator and do not enter the pool or hot tub. Keep gates to the pool area latched. Point out the lifesaving equipment by the

pool to everyone when you enter the pool area. Tie up long hair securely to protect from drain entanglement. Create a water

safety plan as a family, similar to your family’s fire emergency plan.

Tips for Parents

• Teach your children to swim, tread water, float and get out of the pool.

• Teach children to stay away from pool and hot tub drains and drain covers.

• For those who are not strong swimmers, use coast guard-approved flotation devices.

• If you’re in a group, appoint a designated “water watcher.”

• While supervising, never take your eyes off of children in the pool.

• Take a class in First Aid and CPR (for infants, children, and adults).

• Explain to your child that they should never climb trees to get over fences.

• Talk with your children and explain that they should never be in or near the water without eye-to-eye contact from adults.

Fireworks are Illegal

NYPD is REWARDING up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons possessing or distributing fireworks. If you use fireworks, you or someone else can get seriously hurt. If you have fireworks you can be arrested, your car

can be confiscated or your business can be closed. Concerned citizens can anonymously report the delivery, sale or storage of

fireworks by calling 911 for crimes in progress or 311 to just provide information. Your Safety Comes First.

IDENTITY THEFT

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America today. Identity theft requires only a few pieces of valid personal

information. With them, thieves can apply for and receive credit cards or debit cards in your name. Your credit can be quickly

damaged and your efforts to correct these problems can become a nightmare. The acquisition of key pieces of identity, such as

name, address, date of birth, social security number and mother's maiden name, enable the impersonation to occur. This

information allows the identity thief to commit numerous forms of fraud which include, taking over the victim's financial

accounts, opening new bank accounts, purchasing automobiles, applying for credit cards, loans, social security benefits, renting

apartments, and establishing accounts with utility and telephone service providers. The identity thief has many ways to gain

access to your information. It can be obtained from uncollected mail sitting in your mailbox, personal information carelessly

thrown in the garbage, dishonest retail or restaurant employees or by the theft of your wallet or pocketbook.

What to do if you become a victim: • Contact all creditors, by telephone and in writing, to inform them of the situation.

• Notify the Police.

• Alert all banks to flag your accounts and to contact you for unusual activity. Change all passwords and PIN numbers.

• Document all contacts and keep copies of all correspondences.

• Contact the Social Security Administration Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.

• Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to have a new license number issued in your name.

• Call the nearest U.S. Postal Inspection Office.

• Call the Federal Trade Commission's identity theft hotline at 1-877-438-4338 and file a complaint.

• If you are the victim of identity theft, call each credit bureau with a national database and ask to have a "Fraud

Alert/Victim Impact" statement placed in your credit files. Also request that all creditors contact you before they open

any new accounts in your name. The following contact information is provided to assist identity theft victims:

1. Equifax www.equifax.com 1-800-685-1111

2. Experian www.experian.com 1-888-397-3742

3. Trans-Union www.tuc.com 1-800-916-8800

• If you are a victim of check fraud, you should contact the following:

1. Telecheck 1-800-710-9898

2. Equifax 1-800-437-5120

Be careful with your mobile phone.

Remain alert and aware of your

surroundings when using your device, don’t leave your device unattended and always use the security features of your phone

(pin lock, find my iPhone etc..) For more information on preventing theft, or for other crime prevention and personal safety tips

APRIL 2013 NEWSLETTER

Greetings from the 70th Precinct; As the weather gets warmer we think about outdoor activities and functions that takes us away from our home for an extended

time, be we must also think about how we can keep our homes safe from potential burglars?

Here are a few tips about home security lighting to help prevent any break-ins to your home:

Keep the outside of your home well lit! Keeping the outside of your home well lit can help to deter any would be criminals by

shedding light on all possible areas of entry into your home. This can be done with some flood lights or some well-placed

landscape lighting.

Front porch/entry lighting: Keeping your front porch light on while you are away can give the facade of being home even if

you are on a week-long vacation. This can be achieved by purchasing a timer that will turn the lights on and off at certain times

of the day that can be set differently for each day to give the illusion that you are home.

Set up motion sensor lights on the outside of your home. Setting up motion sensor lights on key portions outside of your home

can not only let you know when there is movement, but let your neighbors know as well.

Keep some random lights on in different rooms via plug in timers. Having lights go off and on at random times throughout the

house will make it seem like the house is in use or someone is home working. This is a huge deterrent to any lookouts or

criminals that may be out. Make sure the lights you choose are in areas that can be seen from the street or as someone

approaches your home.

Give a tip and get rewarded!

Recently we unveiled a series of billboards across the City encouraging citizens to call 311 to report someone with an illegal

firearm. We hope that these billboards expand our reach across the City and reaffirm our commitment to getting guns off our

streets.

Under "Operation GunStop" you can receive up to $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest of an individual with an

illegal firearm.

We also wanted to remind you that rewards of up to $2000 are available for information leading to the arrest of an individual

wanted in connection with a violent offense. Call 1-800-577-TIPS or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com for more information.

Identity Theft….

One of the biggest online dangers is identity theft - when criminals access your name, credit cards and other personal

information to benefit themselves. In 2010 an estimated 8.6 million households in the US had at least one person who

experienced identity theft – that is up from 6.4 million in 2005.

One of the major causes of identity theft is phishing. Phishing is a criminal activity in which can come in a variety of forms,

however it usually manifests as fraudulent emails. These e-mails appear to come from a reputable business, i.e. banks,

insurance companies, social networking sites, etc. The e-mails give the reader a reason to click the link and log into a personal

account. When the person clicks the link, they are taken to a website that seems to be genuine, however, the site is actually an

exact replica run by web savvy criminals. Some sites even install malware on your system for the purpose of gathering your

personal information.

Once the victim logs onto the fraudulent website, the criminal now has access to their user name and password. This allows the

thieves to go to the actual site, log in as you, and steal any personal information you have stored, such as credit cards or bank

account numbers, or engage in other fraudulent transactions (online orders etc.)

NEW YORK CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

70th

PRECINCT

BROOKLYN

NEW YORK

Here are some ways to avoid it:

The best way to avoid it is to always go directly to a website before entering your log in information, never click on a link in an

email. If you get a suspicious email purporting to be from your bank/credit card company etc, call the customer service number

on your bank statement or the back of your credit/debit card and ask the representative if they sent you that email.

Ensure your login passwords are different for every site. Often your favorite shopping website’s password will be the same as

your banking password, and once a criminal has one they often try it against other sites - with an alarming success rate.

- Criminals have moved to voice phishing, whereby they call you on the phone from a spoofed caller ID pretending to be

from your bank/credit card company etc, if you get such a call, politely decline and tell them you will call back. Dial

the number on your statement/card and speak to the fraud department to verify that they placed the call to you. Never

give out information unsolicited over the phone or internet.

- Ensure your computer’s security software is up to date, and that you are free of any malware or viruses. Your

computer’s manufacturer can provide you with more detailed recommendations.

Surf safe, surf aware – and guard your information with care!

Bicycle Safety

Remember that bicycles are subject to the same traffic rules and regulations as a motor vehicle. The city has expanded bike

lanes into all 5 boroughs and maps that can help plan your bike trip around the city are available online here: Bike Maps

Be sure to secure your bike to a fixed object. Parking meters and scaffolding are not recommended. Ideally an anchored bicycle

rack is the best option. Be sure to remove any accessories, and for longer term storage consider anchoring or locking the

seat. Removable wheels are recommended as well.

To be vigilant and to combat any rise of bicycle thefts our Crime Prevention Officer coordinates Operation Identification Bike

registration at our precinct. Contact Officer Demarco at 718-851-5504.

ALERT: Motorist Distraction Scam

The New York City Police Department is advising motorists of a scam in which suspects distract victims by falsely informing

them that their vehicle has a flat tire.

While the victims inspect the purported damage, a suspect removes property from inside the vehicle. Anyone with information

regarding these incidents is asked to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).

You can also submit tips by logging onto the NYPD Crime Stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or

texting your tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577 plus your tip. All calls are strictly confidential.

MARCH 2013 NEWSLETTER

Good Evening Community,

As you are aware, the National Weather Center has forecasted snow and rain for the area starting after midnight, Wednesday 3/6

until Thursday night 3/7. The Forecast calls for snow fall up to 1-3 inches with wind gusts reaching 40 mph. This will cause

low visibility as far as getting around. Please prepare yourself and your family. Please make every effort to run all your errands

before the snow.

March 10 is Daylight savings time; please remember to turn your clocks one (1) hour ahead as well as check your batteries in

your home smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to assure battery life.

The High Holy Days are approaching and the 70th Precinct will be fully operational and ready to assist your needs. Please

remember to call 911 only for emergencies and 311 for non-emergencies.

The Precinct has several NYPD programs listed below that we want you to stay aware of:

Law Enforcement Explorers Program: Law Enforcement Explorers is a program designed to educate young men and women,

ages 14-20, about law enforcement. A uniformed member of the service in the precinct acts as the on-site Post Advisor for the

Explorer Program. The program focuses on six areas: career, service, leadership, social, fitness and outdoors. The Explorers

Program encourages young people to pursue a law enforcement career. There are currently close to 4,000 Explorer posts within

the NYPD. If you have, or know of a youth that will benefit from this program, please contact Police Officer Slade at (718)

851-5524.

Crime Prevention Vehicle Programs: These programs are offered Free of charge by the New York City Police Department.

Combat Auto Theft (CAT): Owners of vehicles who state that the auto is not normally operated between the hours of 1:00 a.m.

and 5:00 a.m. Decals are affixed to the rear side windows of the registered vehicle. Owner signs a waiver giving police the

authority to stop vehicle if it's seen being operated during program hours. If proper identification is produced by the operator,

the police will end the stop. Vehicle owners can register their vehicle at the local precinct.

Security Survey: Security Surveys are an analytical security appraisal of a residence or business, which includes

recommendations on how to upgrade, your present security. A private home, for example, may only entail locks, doors,

windows and an alarm system. A corporate facility may require addressing a much wider range of needs, such as closed circuit

television, electronic access control, fencing, security lighting, mail handling and visitor screening procedures. The survey will

address security vulnerabilities and outline corrective measures.

Vin Etching: Vin Etching is a chemical process that permanently etches the vehicle identification number on the glass of the

vehicle. This serves to deter theft and trace stolen parts.

Operation ID: The NYPD offers a free program – “Operation ID” - whereby a unique serial number is engraved on all portable

valuable electronics and the owner’s information is registered with the Police Department. This program can be implemented by

contacting our Crime Prevention Officer, or the Community Affairs Unit direct at 718-851-5504 or 718-851-5557.

FEBRUARY 2013 NEWSLETTER Good Afternoon Community,

As you are aware, the New York Weather Center has issued a Blizzard Storm Watch for the area starting Friday

afternoon, 2/8 until Saturday evening, 2/9. The Forecast calls for heavy snow fall up to 18 inches with wind gusts reaching as

high as 50mph. This will cause low visibility as far as getting around. It is expected that there will also be some flooding in the

area, so please prepare yourself and your family. Please make every effort to run all your errands before the storm, such as food

shopping, charging up your electrical devices and buying batteries for your flashlights.

The 70th Precinct is fully operational and ready to assist your needs. Please remember to call 911 only for emergencies

and 311 for non-emergencies. We are making every effort to respond to the many calls we are receiving and are trying to

prioritize them accordingly. Thank you for your patience and understanding, and REMEMBER, the safety of all members of the

community is our number one priority.

NOTE: If you see any downed trees or branches, please call 311, unless there is an emergency then call 911. If you see downed

electrical wires, do not go near them. Treat all downed wires as if they were live. Never attempt to move or touch them with

any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view from tree limbs, leaves or water. Downed wires can lie in

puddles of water ranging anywhere from a couple of feet or a few blocks. This can create a very dangerous condition and can

cause electrocution if you step in the puddle. Please avoid stepping into any puddles if possible. You can report downed wires to

Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED, 311 or through the Precinct. If power lines fall on your vehicle while you're inside, REMAIN

inside the vehicle and await emergency personnel.

* If you have an Elderly neighbor, please check in on them, and assist them if needed.

BURGLARIES

In the event of a major storm or serious weather condition, we understand that members of the community will seek

shelter elsewhere or stay with relatives or friends. The 70th Precinct has recently seen an increase in Burglaries where the

method of entry has been to enter windows from fire escapes or unlocked windows from the side or rear of houses. Below are

some helpful tips to secure your homes and businesses;

- Tip #1- is to think like burglars do. So now look around and evaluate other aspects of your home security. Are you

providing an easy way in? Open vents or crawl spaces? Dog doors? Did you leave a ladder outside? Burglars could use

it, or climb a nearby tree, to get in an upstairs window.

- Tip #2- Of course the front or back door is the most common point of entry for a burglar. Remember to use a deadbolt.

Burglars also look for unlocked ground floor windows, especially on the side of your home or backyard.

- Tip #3- Don't advertise that you're away. Burglars look for clues like uncollected newspapers and mail. Cancel or

postpone deliveries until you return home. Unshoveled driveways imply that there is nobody home and makes your

home more vulnerable for a Burglary.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social Media is now part of our lives, and is especially fun around the holidays.

NEW YORK CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

70th

PRECINCT

BROOKLYN

NEW YORK

- Tip #4- Be careful about what you post! If you post your travel schedule across the internet, this will make your home

more vulnerable for a Burglary. Please pass this information to your friends and family.

- Tip #5- Beware of identity theft. Thieves will gather your key financial info, like your SSN and credit card number, as

well as your money.

- Tip #6- Be Neighborly. Neighbors can do a great job of looking out for each other. Ask them to keep an eye on your

home. Encourage neighbors to report suspicious behavior.

INTERIOR LIGHTS

- Tip #7- Complete darkness in your home suggests that nobody is inside. Exterior lights (especially the motion-activated

type) are a great deterrent. Put interior lights on a timer, so they'll come on in the evening if you're away. Be mindful to

keep curtains and shades down as to not advertise personal property in your home such as electronics or jewelry.

- Tip #8- Please do not leave hidden extra keys outside your home. The locations of these keys are more obvious than

you would think. Also, please don't post your address on the keychain. This will again, make your home a target.

Provide a family member or friend with an extra copy of your house keys.

USE YOUR ALARM & CAMERA SECURITY SYSTEMS

- Tip #9- Alarm & Camera Security systems today can do much more than just sound an alarm or take surveillance -

some have integrated fire, smoke, carbon monoxide and flood monitoring. Call your alarm company to ensure you are

taking advantage of all the features offered.

- Tip #10 - Arm your Alarm & Security System. Even the best alarm system is no help unless you use it. When you

leave, remember to arm the system in "Away" mode, to engage all your sensors.

TRAFFIC SAFETY TIP

Please don't drive or walk into moving traffic while talking or texting on your cell phone, this can cause a very serious accident.

Also, we encourage that during the course of this storm, you refrain from any unnecessary travel. We are anticipating very

hazardous road conditions and ask that you please remain in your homes unless there is an emergency. In the event your vehicle

gets stuck in the snow, please do not abandon the vehicle in the roadway. This will prevent emergency vehicles from

responding to calls for assistance.

CAR BREAK-INS

We are aware that there have been numerous car break-ins reported in the past few weeks. In order to prevent your vehicle from

being broken into, below are a few crime prevention tips:

Don't leave wallets, cell phones, lap tops, credit cards or any other valuables in your vehicle visible once you park your car or

truck. Thieves are always looking for the opportunity to remove your personal belongings. Make sure all doors are locked,

remove the circle mark caused by your suction cup if you have a GPS system. This will suggest that an expensive electronic

device is present inside your vehicle and makes it more vulnerable to be broken into. Some criminals look at the dashboards of

cars. If they see the cigarette lighter is missing or the cover is open on the power outlet, this will suggest the possibility that it

NEW YORK CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

70th

PRECINCT

BROOKLYN

NEW YORK

has been taken out to accommodate a battery charger or power adapter for an electronic device. They're willing to take a chance

that the device is not far away - maybe stored in the glove box or center console. So, when they don't see a cigarette lighter in a

car, some thieves will break the passenger side window, and search your car, hoping to find some valuables inside.

GAS LINES

It has come to our attention that gas lines are beginning to get long as we have seen in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. We

ask that you be patient and respectful to your fellow motorists and recommend filling up your vehicles at a quarter tank or

below to help reduce the volume of vehicles at gas stations. An over-abundance of vehicles can cause a major traffic congestion

not only at the pumps but in the streets creating a hazardous condition for motorists.

NYPD I-PHONE APPLICATION

The NYPD has recently launched an official application for the iPhone, the App is called NYPD. We are asking you to spread

the word to your neighbors and encourage them to download this useful application.

Below you will find some points that may assist you in answering questions about the app, and to help you spread the word -

OPERATION ID

Almost 1/3 of all laptop thefts occur during the course of a Burglary. Once a thief is in your home, small portable electronic

items are easily removed and often easily sold. Would you buy a second-hand laptop if it had a NYPD ID number engraved on

it? Engraving items make it harder for criminals to dispose of valuables thru dark-market channels, and may even deter theft. It

can also help reunite you with your lost property.

The NYPD offers a free program – “Operation ID” - whereby a unique serial number is engraved on all portable valuable

electronics and the owner’s information is registered with the Police Department. This program can be implemented by

contacting our Crime Prevention Officer, or the Community Affairs Unit direct at 718-851-5504 or 718-851-5557.

On behalf of myself and members of the 70th Precinct, we wish all members of the community a safe weekend as we get thru

another major storm. We thank you in advance for your support and patience.

DECEMBER 2012 NEWSLETTER

Good Afternoon Community,

This months 70th Precinct Community Council Meeting will be 7:30pm on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 175

Lawrence Avenue. We look forward to seeing you there.

Holidays are high season for Scam Artists, especially Confidence Artists. A confidence trick is an attempt to defraud a

person or group after first gaining their confidence by exploiting characteristics of the human psyche. Consumers are

typically in a generous mood, and often distracted. Be weary of strangers approaching you asking for something that may

ordinarily raise suspicions. A favorite holiday scam involves someone approaching you in a parking lot with a gas can

looking to "borrow" some money for gas. Security is better equipped to handle stranded motorists.

also; NYPD never asks for money over the phone!

Traffic Safety

Pedestrians, please be attentive while crossing the street. Although your cell phone text may be important, its not worth

your life.

Drivers, please wear your seatbelt and stay off your cell phones while driving.

And, don't drink and drive!

Burglary Tips

It is important to emphasize some key burglary prevention tips:

- Look around your home. Review your landscape and lighting, you do not want to create an opportunity for a burglar to

gain entry thru an unlit or hidden area.

- If you are going away use a timer for your lights to give the appearance you are home. Be sure to stop deliveries of

papers and have a neighbor check your mail and packages.

You don't want to make your

home a showcase for burglars!"

Hello From The 70th Precinct,

Veteran's Day is today, the 70th Precinct honor our nation’s military men and women who have serve our Country, and

those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country.

There are a few items we would like to bring to your attention. As we attempt to recover from Hurricane Sandy and the

recent Nor'easter. It has come to our attention of some issues where people are prying on others vulnerability. The

following are a few issues that we would like you to be aware of:

Remember there are alot of Utility workers on the streets, please be mindful of possible scams. Make sure you check for

identification. A utility worker will only request entrance into your home if you call regarding a particular problem inside

your home. If you suspect something is not right with them, Do Not let them in, and call 911.

During this time there are people who will pry on our weaknesses and attempt to scam you for donations, as well as for

services. Remember, donations should be done through an authorized Charity organization. These organizations don't

usually do door to door collections. Remember to always check the individuals credentials.

*** One recent scam that was brought to our attention, happened to an individual on a gas line. While waiting for gas on

the line the individual ran out of gas and was then offered gas to be poured into their tank from a gasoline canister which

inturn was water. Though the gas lines maybe long, please have a little patience and wait on the line, it may cost you more

in the end.

As of November 9, 2012, Mayor Bloomberg has implemented the Executive order of Odd/Even days for Gas. If your

license plate ends with an odd number, you must get gas on an odd day of the week. If your license plate number ends in

an even number, you must get gas on an even day. If your plate ends with a letter or you have vanity plates, you can get

gas on an Odd day. Example; Today is November 11, therefore, today is considered an Odd day and it entitles Odd

license plate holders to receive gas today.

Hello From the 70th Precinct,

As you are all well aware that the weather has progressively gotten worse. The National weather service forecast that

this Nor'easter storm will continue throughout the evening with heavy snow for several hours. The accumulations are

already two to four inches. The wind gusts are expected to be 25- 40 MPH until midnight, then the snow should be turning

to rain after midnight until about 6 AM.

Please DO NOT go out unless it is absolutely necessary. Walking and driving in this weather can be very

hazardous. Use extra caution when you are crossing the streets. The roads are very slippery. Please note that the trees are

already weakened by Hurricane Sandy, and the heavy wet snow may cause them to fall, possibly damaging electrical

wires causing power outages again.

The 70th Precinct is fully operational and ready to assist your needs. Please remember to call 911 only for emergencies

and 311 for Non-emergencies. We are making every effort to respond to the many calls we are receiving and are trying to

prioritize them accordingly.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and REMEMBER, the safety of all members of the community is our

number one priority.

Good Morning Community,

APPROACHING NOR'EASTER STORM

The National Weather Service is forecasting a Nor'Easter storm to hit our area late Wednesday night into Thursday

bringing with it possible 40-55 mile per hour winds and 2-4" of rain. Tidal surges of 4-5' are also possible.

While New York has seen its share of these types of storms in the past, its arrival just about one week after Hurricane

Sandy devastated parts of our City is cause for us to take pause and ensure some basic preparations are made -

especially in tidal areas.

We ask that you ensure loose items or debris around your home are secured, and any tree limbs that were affected by

Sandy be removed or secured.

Stock up on essential food and water supplies if possible, and fuel your vehicles when you can (we know the lines are

long!)

Make a plan - ensure family members know how to contact each other and where to meet should communication be

difficult.

Check your flashlights and make sure they have a supply of batteries.

If you use candles, use them with care - keep them away from any flammable objects (curtains etc) and never use them

unattended - particularly when sleeping.

Do not use your stove or oven to provide heat - Carbon Monoxide is deadly and open flames are even more dangerous.

Most importantly, check on your neighbors - especially the elderly and infirm - now, more than ever, New Yorker's

need each other.

We are here if you needs us - our Community Affairs Unit number is (718) 851-5557.

Good Afternoon from the 70th Precinct,

We hope everyone is doing well today and has taken advantage of the extra hour of sleep. Don't forget at this time,

with the time change you should also change the batteries in your smoke detectors. Once again we would like to update

the Community. As we have been reporting, Gas lines are still very long. Unlike the past couple of days where only a few

gas stations were operating; there has been more frequency in truck deliveries, and more stations have been opening. We

understand your need for gas and we understand the waits on the line. However, we ask that you please respect the

businesses in the area and don't block their access points, driveways, etc. We also ask for your patience. Remember, if you

can use your bicycle to get to your destinations it would be advisable, and you would be saving on gas!

Other information we would like to get to you, tomorrow the work week begins again. Lower Manhattan has had

power restored, and trains are running again. However, train schedules are not going to be the norm. Schools are also

reopening, so please be aware while driving. There are still power outages, trees and wires down, and traffic lights are out

in areas of NYC. Election Day is Tuesday, please check to see if you will have any problems with voting. I also want to

inform you that a Nor'easter is probably going to hit the NYC area by Wednesday. Please prepare yourself in case

problems arise. Also, be aware that trees were weakened by the previous storm and can fall easily. Use all precautions if

you need to be out driving in the storm.

Remember there are alot of Utility workers on the streets, please be mindful of possible scams. Check for

identifications, they don't enter your home unless you call them with a problem. If you suspect something is not right with

them, call 911.

If there are any issues or concerns that we didn't address, please contact us at the 70th Precinct Community Affairs

Office at 718-851-5557, or [email protected]

Thank you all once again for your understanding and patience.

Dear Community Members,

We just want to take a moment to update you on conditions within the confines of the 70th Precinct. Some traffic

lights are still out in our area and there are still some wires down , These conditions still make parts of the area dangerous

to navigate. so please be careful. Power is still out in many areas of NYC. These conditions make it much more

dangerous for pedestrians to walk around. We will have extra personnel at night to handle issues that arise from these

outages. Also please be mindful of possible scams such as phony Con Ed and National Grid workers, Check for

Identifications. They Normally don't enter your home unless you called them with a problem inside your house. if you

suspect something is not right with them, call 911.

We also spoke about the gasoline shortages around the area, and understand many people are low on gas; however

we still need to have a free flow of traffic. We are asking everyone not to block sidewalks, driveways or double and

triple park. These violations cause many issues for traffic flow and restrict us from getting gas trucks to their

destinations. If you can use your bicycles to go shopping or to get to your destinations it would be advisable, and also you

would be saving gas !

The safety of all members of the community are our number one priority. We are attempting to get

everything as close to normal as possible and will continue to update you as events unfold. Once again, Thank You for

your understanding, and we have all of you who were affected, or have family and friends who were affected in our

thoughts and prayers.

We too are assisting some of our personnel who have been severely effected by this storm. We really appreciate your

kind words and support.

Dear Community Members,

Again we just wanted to keep you updated. As we said earlier, and as many of you have experienced; there have been

massive traffic backups around the area. Several restrictions were put in place and we ask you to check on these

restrictions if you are traveling tomorrow.

We also spoke about the gasoline shortages around the area, and understand many people are low on gas; however we still

need to have a free flow of traffic. We are asking everyone not to block sidewalks, driveways or double and triple park.

These violations cause many issues for traffic flow and restrict us from getting gas trucks to their destinations.

As far as the trees blocking the street, we believe that all streets in the precinct are passable. If you have a tree blocking

your street, we ask you to please inform us so we can notify the proper agency. We are fortunate to not have lost power in

this area and we are working closely with the Elected officials, other agencies, Community boards, civic associations,

Precinct council, Religious leaders and our liaisons to expedite some of the issues we face. We thank all of them for their

assistance.

I want to thank the recipients of our emails for forwarding the emails to their groups and friends. We speak about police

and community partnership and because of the communication, we have been fortunate that our problems aren't as severe

as others. If you have any feedback or suggestions on this email system or know others in the community who want to

receive them please reply to us. In the event of an emergency , remember to call 911, and for other issues, please call 311.

Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and understanding. Lastly we at the 70th Precinct have you all in our thoughts

and prayers; and understand many of our family and friends are dealing with personal tragedies. We pray for them.

Thank you again.

Good Afternoon,

Just a quick update on issues pertaining to the community. There are massive traffic back ups around the city, also

restrictions going into Manhattan, so please adhere to those rules. It will probably take a couple of hours to get to

Manhattan.

Another issue is gasoline. Most gas stations in the area are out of gas and the stations with gas have very long lines. We

are in the process of speaking with gas stations personnel to get a better idea of when they will have more gas.

We at the 70th Precinct are fully operational and want to operate as normal as possible, so please call 911 for any

Dear Community Members,

I know we sent out a message recently, however after surveying the area again our major issue that we want you to be

aware of is dealing with fuel.

Gas stations are being sought out all over the tri-state area from many people. We understand the need to get around,

however some consumers are double and triple parking causing backups.

Please try to not drive if you do not have to and please understand we need to have traffic flow to get our communities

Dear Community Members,

We just want to take a moment to update you on conditions within the confines of the 70th Precinct. There are

approximately 22 trees down blocking streets in the area. Some traffic lights are out and there are still wires down is the

area. These conditions still make parts of the area dangerous to navigate.

Also, there are areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn closed down due to devastating effects caused by Hurricane

Sandy. These closed areas are causing major traffic backups. Ocean Parkway going toward Manhattan is moving very

slowly. Power is still out in many areas of NYC.

As we found out last night, it is possible that con Edison will turn power off in our area at times also. We will have extra

Greeting from the 70th Precinct Commanding Officer,

As you are already aware of the upcoming hurricane that is heading in our direction, we are sending you this

email to inform you that the 70th Precinct will be running in full capacity during this time and will be here to assist you as

needed.

The Weather Forecast has predicted that" Hurricane Sandy" will move up the East Coast from 6 AM Monday

through 6PM Tuesday, and has the potential to be a very devastating storm. Though the storm is expected to have heavy

down pours of rain, it will be combined with wind gusts from 40- 70 MPH. With this in mind, we ask that you prepare

yourselves and your family for a safe ride through this storm.

It is likely that there will be some flooding, but due to the intense winds we can expect power outages, fallen trees

, and flying debris.

Mayor Bloomberg has ordered a mandatory evacuation for all residents in the city's low lying areas, also know as "Zone

A", which will be all Coastal areas. In Brooklyn South that would include the Coney Island and Manhattan Beach areas.

As we prepare for the storm, please keep these safety precautions in mind:

Stay home if you can, and have enough non-perishable food and water for approximately three days

Stock up on necessary essentials such as; flashlights, batteries, first-aid kits

Tie-down loose items in your yards, such as; furniture, decorations, garbage can, bbq grills, gas tanks,

solar lights and flag poles

Gas up your vehicle and have cash on hand in case of power outages

Fill your bathtub with water for flushing the toilets

Charge up your Cell phones and mobile devices

Note: If you see any downed trees or branches, please call 311, unless there is an emergency then call 911.

If you see downed electrical wires, do not go near them. Treat all downed wires as if they were live. Never

attempt to move or touch them with any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view, from tree limbs,

leaves or water. You can report downed wires to Con Edison at 1-800-75-CON-ED, 311 or through the Precinct. If power

lines fall on your vehicle while you're in it, stay inside the vehicle and await emergency personnel.

During the height of the storm, stay away from windows and avoid using elevators. If you don't have to go

outside, PLEASE DON'T.

* If you have an Elderly neighbor, please check in on them, and assist them in this preparedness.

TRICK OR TREAT: Safety Tips for Halloween!

The New York City Police Department wants to remind you that Halloween is one of the most enjoyable days of the year

for many children, but parents should be aware of the potential risks that can affect children who are not supervised

properly. Trick-or-treaters should always have adult supervision, even if they are traveling in a group of friends, to ensure

that the only scary experiences children have are those associated with the spirit of Halloween. The following

recommendations are for parents and guardians:

An adult should always examine Halloween treats before children eat them. Never eat pre-opened or unwrapped

Halloween foods.

Costumes should be flame-retardant and should allow children to walk freely without tripping. Children's ability

to see, hear and move should not be impaired by unwieldy masks.

Make certain that any face paint or make-up used on skin or costumes is non-toxic.

Extra care should be taken on streets and at crossings, especially at dusk, and after dark. Children should carry a

flashlight and wear reflective or bright-colored clothing at night.

Emergency, identification information should be placed discreetly inside clothing of small children, in case of

accidental separation.

Avoid having children wear their names outwardly on clothing or jewelry which may allow a stranger to call them

by name and appear to know them.

As always, children should be cautioned to avoid strangers, as well as poorly-lit areas and homes of people they

do not know.

Halloween treats should only be consumed if they are packaged appropriately. Parents can help protect their children by

making sure that treats are wrapped in their original, unbroken packages – do not allow children to have loose candy, open

glasses or bottles, fresh fruit, or homemade goods. If after eating a Halloween treat there is evidence that it may have been

tampered with, or if it has a strange taste, or if a child feels sick, parents or guardians can call the NYC Health

Department's Poison Control Center. The Poison Control Center is open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, for

emergencies and advice at (212) POISONS (764-7667), (212) VENENOS (836-3667) for Spanish language speakers, or

(212) 689-9014 for TDD users. The National toll free number, 1-800-222-1222, connects to the nearest poison control

center.

SUMMER 2012 NEWSLETTER

Greetings from the 70th Precinct,

This summer we want everyone to be safe and to keep in mind all of the important safety tips that we have

provided over the past months. Be assured that the 70th Precinct will have full patrol coverage for the summer and we

look forward to serving you. We would like to inform you that the 70th Precinct has a new Captain. Her name is Ebony

Washington. She is originally from the 69th Precinct and looks forward to working in this community. Captain

Harrington has moved on in his career to another unit in the Police Department and we wish him well.

If you plan on going away for the summer; please safeguard your home by following these safety tips.

DOORS: Check your doors and door frame. Should they be repaired or replaced? All exterior doors should be either

metal or solid core wood (1 3/4" thick). Glass or thin wood panels, in or near the door, can be

protected by installing polycarbonate glazing and secured with one way screws.

AIR CONDITIONERS: Should be secured to the window opening to prevent being pulled out or pushed in.

WINDOW GATE: On the first floor or on any emergency exit window (fire escape), a gate should be one that has been

approved by the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals. (This gate is commonly known as the ''ferry" or

"safety" gate and is operated by a latch and not a padlock or combination lock).

GARAGE: Secure an attached garage as you would your dwelling as it is an access point into your house. Other

structures such as an unattached garage, tool shed and storage areas should be locked with high quality security devices

that are properly installed.

LIGHTING: Illuminate the perimeter of your house, especially the door areas with enough light to see a

silhouette. Lights that are too bright will hamper viewing. Install the light fixture out of reach, and in a tamper and

weather resistant housing.

SHRUBBERY: Should be cut or designed so that it does not obstruct viewing from inside or outside. Keep a clear view

to provide maximum visibility and little concealment.

IDENTITY THEFT: Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America today. Identity theft requires only a

few pieces of valid personal information. With them, thieves can apply for and receive credit cards or debit cards in your

name. Your credit can be quickly damaged and your efforts to correct these problems can become a nightmare. The

acquisition of key pieces of identity, such as name, address, date of birth, social security number and mother's maiden

name, enable the impersonation to occur. This information allows the identity thief to commit numerous forms of

fraud which include, taking over the victim's financial accounts, opening new bank accounts, purchasing automobiles,

applying for credit cards, loans, social security benefits, renting apartments, and establishing accounts with utility and

telephone service providers. The identity thief has many ways to gain access to your information. It can be obtained from

uncollected mail sitting in your mailbox, personal information carelessly thrown in the garbage, dishonest retail or

restaurant employees or by the theft of your wallet or pocketbook.

What to do if you become a victim of identity theft:

Notify the Police.

Contact all creditors, by telephone and in writing, to inform them of the situation.

Alert all banks to flag your accounts and to contact you for unusual activity. Change all passwords and PIN

numbers.

Android devices and Mobile Phones as well as Nooks and Kindles are the most common types of stolen property in New

JANUARY 2012 NEWSLETTER Greetings from the 70th Precinct,

We finished January with a 3.6% reduction in crime and we will try to continue this downward trend for 2012. Although crime is down,

the community must continue to be aware of their surroundings; especially while on the subway. Please don’t give someone an easy

opportunity to take your personal belongings, like your I-pad, I-phone or any other electronic devices.

Recently there have been complaints of stray dogs in the Midwood area by the Long Island Rail Road; the Department of Animal Care &

Control has set up traps for these dogs and hopefully they will be caught soon, also the MTA will be repairing the fence in vicinity,

preventing these dogs easy access. If you see these dogs, please don’t approach them, call 911 and let the Police handle the situation. We

have procedures in place for these types of calls.

Also; please do not leave your valuables in your vehicle while your vehicle is unoccupied. This will prevent someone from breaking into

your car unnecessarily.

The weather for this week is abnormally warm, last year at this time we had over 50 inches of snow which meant less people out and

about, so enjoy the temperature and be careful while you are out.

The 70th Precinct is dedicated to keeping you abreast and aware of possible scams that could endanger you and your family. Scammers

can call your e-mail you or show up at your door step. Below is a list of some things for you to watch out for and some tips to help. And as

always please remember…. IF THERE IS A PROBLEM CALL THE PRECINCT at 718-851-5511. IN AN EMERGENCY DIAL 911

♦ Don’t give out information to unknown persons, ESPECIALLY –bank account numbers, social security numbers, or credit card numbers.

♦ If you receive a call or an email from a bank or a credit card company, EVEN if it is your bank or credit card company- DO NOT give out

information. Call back the number you have on your bill or your card to verify that they need information.

♦ No stranger really wants to share money with you!

♦ If you didn’t enter a lottery or a contest-you probably didn’t win one! Most reputable companies will not ask you to forward money or to

pay for shipping if you won a prize in a legitimate contest.

♦ Watch out for con artists trying to divert your attention. They sometimes work in pairs or teams and while one is talking to you, the other

will pick your pocket, or remove your property.

♦ Be wary of illegal venders selling goods on the street or out of vans or cars. Purchase merchandise from licensed vendors or reputable

stores.

♦ IF SOMETHING SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE…IT PROBABLY IS!!!

DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR TO STRANGERS!

THE FOLLOWING ARE EXAMPLES OF POSSIBLE SCAMS:

UTILITY WORKERS:

♦ Claiming that your service will be shut off if you don’t pay your bill in cash immediately.

♦ Claiming that they must get access because of an emergency situation (leak, wiring problem, etc)

♦ Asking to see a copy of your bill for whatever reason

In apartment buildings call your super or your management company before allowing access.

STRANGERS:

♦ Claiming to be a crime victim (“I was just attacked”)

♦ Claiming that their car broke down a few feet away

♦ Claiming that a family member is sick and in their car

♦ Claiming to be looking for someone who doesn’t live at your address or asking for help with finding an address.

♦ Claiming to be from out of town and ran out of gas.

♦ Requesting to use your phone because their cell phone died (trying to Gain entry to your home.)

*Note- If you choose to help them-offer to make a phone call on their behalf from your house, without ever opening your door. If you are

home alone and the stranger(s) is right outside your door-pretend you are speaking to someone else inside your house (e.g. “I’ll be right there,

someone is at the door).

*If this happens to you or you become aware of this, please contact the precinct immediately. For emergency situations, dial 911. For

information regarding an ongoing scam in the community; call the 70th Precinct at (718) 851-5511 or the Community Affairs Office at (718)

851-5557.
