Preakness Healthcare Center Celebrates its 90th Anniversary
by: Neela Mahbuba
On December 9th, 2019, the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders present-ed Preakness Healthcare Center with a procla-mation in recognition and celebration of its 90th anniversary. In attendance were various elect-ed and appointed officials, including current and former Passaic County freeholders, Pater-son Mayor Andre Sayegh, and a representa-tive for Senator Mikie Sherrill, who also pre-sented Preakness Healthcare Center with a proclamation in recognition of its ninety years
of service to residents.
“Passaic County's Freeholders are so proud to recognize the outstanding service Preakness Healthcare Center has been providing for the past ninety years,” stated
Freeholder Director John Bartlett.
“Residents of Preakness Healthcare Center, their families and guests have continu-ally commended the care provided here," Bart-lett continued. "When you step in the door, it
feels like home and family, and I cannot offer enough praise for our staff, physicians, the Resident Council, Preakness Auxiliary members, Pastoral Care team and volunteers. They do so much to provide the best possible quality of life for Preakness Healthcare Center
residents regardless of their needs.”
Preakness Healthcare Center, began its mission to care of the elderly, chronically ill and disabled in 1929, and in 1961 merged with Valley View and the Hope Dell Welfare Home as Preakness Hospital. In 1988, with the addi-tional 120 beds, Preakness Healthcare Center became the official name of the facility. In 2009, the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders built a new facility for Preakness Healthcare Center, replacing the old one. The new facility expanded to house 406 residents. It continues to provide long term skilled nurs-ing care, sub-acute care, behavioral care, res-piratory, respite and hospice care, to ensure
the upmost care for its residents.

Residents, Families and Employees Celebrate Our 90th Anniversary!
On Friday, December 13, 2019, the residents, families and employees enjoyed a gathering to celebrate the 90th Anni-versary of Preakness Healthcare Center. Music from our very own “DJ Dance Party” ( Tyrone Buggs, Tony Sangster and La-mar Davis,) dancing and dessert made for a joyous event! Preakness Healthcare Center was honored to highlight Miguel V. as the resident who has resided in Preakness Healthcare Center the longest. On December 9, 2019, evening of the Preakness Healthcare Center Gala, Miguel received recognition from the Passaic County Freeholders. Also receiving recognition was past Resident Council President, Ed L., for being the Resident Council President who has served the facility the longest. His efforts assisted in the planning and implementation of the Preakness Healthcare Center facility we know today.
To mark the occasion, each resident will be receiving a commemorative Preakness Healthcare Center 90th Anniver-sary photo frame.

Enrique Sangama Mental Health Administrator
Recognized by the Passaic
County Freeholders during
Hispanic Heritage Month
Like many who enter the United States as immigrants, there are always stories of hope, adventure and progress. This American adven-ture begins when Enrique Sangama, Preakness Healthcare Center’s Mental Health Administrator, immigrated to Paterson, NJ in 1989. His parents and sister left their native Lima, Peru to come to the United States.
At the age of sixteen, he began his American education in the ESL pro-gram at Eastside High School. As an “Eastside Ghost” in the graduating class of 1991, Enrique chose to continue his higher education at Montclair State University, where he pursued a degree in Public Health. Due to challenges of understanding the English language fully, and working full time, it prolonged the completion of his degree. Following graduation and receiving his Bachelor’s degree nearly 10 years later, he accepted employment with Preakness Healthcare Center, where he served as a Recreation Therapist to the “Pathway” Special Care Behavior Unit. He was excited to also volunteer his time and services as an EMT with the Passaic County Sherriff’s Department. Enrique was soon promoted to serve as a Recrea-tion Supervisor, which allowed his time to focus on a population of residents who are often misunderstood, those living with mental illness.
Enrique has been a dedicated employee to Passaic County and Preakness Healthcare Center since 2003. Through hands on work experience and his desire to further succeed in the healthcare field, Enrique attends Caldwell University, where he is completing his Master degree as a Behavior Analyst. In 2012, he began his position as the Mental Health Administrator for Preakness Healthcare Center. He currently oversees the daily functions of the Pathway Behavioral Health and Plaza West Mental Health Units.
Congratulations, Enrique, for your hard work and contributions to the residents of Preakness Healthcare Center!

For the sixth consecutive year, Preakness Healthcare Center is home to the “Excellence In Care Award” for 2019 as selected by LeadingAge New Jersey, the statewide association of not-for-profit senior care organizations. It is dedicated to advancing quality aging services in New Jersey through advo-cacy, education, and fellowship.
Tsegai Ghebreyohannes, Omnibus Bus Operator, r eceived this year’s honor for his selfless dedication to the residents of Preakness Healthcare Center.
Tsegai applied for a position working for Preakness Healthcare Center as a stock clerk with the Central Supply department in 1987. He learned the skills, showed his worth and proved he belonged. Within his 1st year of employment, he was offered an opportunity to obtain a CDL License and work as a bus opera-tor for Preakness Healthcare Center. This gave him a chance to interact more with the residents of the facility and escort them on trips throughout the community. Through the years, Tsegai has been a cheering buddy at baseball games, dance partner on the Spirit of NJ luncheon cruise, personal tour guide at the jer-sey shore, all while getting the residents from Point A to Point B. Every detail is important to him including the safety and comfort of the residents during their travel experience. He has never had an accident. The most important detail is putting a smile on the faces of the residents and becoming a part of their experiences. Tsegai also can be found playing pool in the game room with the residents, serving food and beverages at resident events or providing a listening ear when a resident is having a tough day. What is Tsegai’s job title? An Omnibus Operator? Not quite. He is Preakness Healthcare Center’s most valuable player!
He received this award amongst 200+ guests at The Boathouse at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, NJ on December 4, 2019. Congratulations!
Tsegai was also honored at the Preakness Healthcare Center 90th Anniversary Gala on December 9, 2019 by the Passaic County Freeholder’s with a proclamation.
