6The Women Airforce Service Pilots

(WASP) made up songs to sing as they marched. Some of the

songs were based on their daily lives, like Zoot Suits and Parachutes,

The Mess Hall Song, and Yankee Doodle Pilots.

What is your favorite song?

If you changed the words in your favorite song to make it be about

your life, what would its new title be?

Fifinella, or Fifi, was the Women Airforce Service Pilots’ (WASP)

mascot. She was a feisty female gremlin who had wings and

wore goggles. Fifi brought the women together

as a team and made them feel like a family.

Do you belong to a team, organization, or group of people?

What group do you belong to?

Does your group have a favorite mascot? What is it?

If you could create a mascot for your group what would it be?

from evil male gremlins that were known to break a pilot’s airplane or cause trouble during a flight.

could cause.

Is there anything that you are scared of?

Who would you ask to help protect you from your fears?

enough food, shelter, and clothing to live. Some children

did not even go to school because they had to work.

change your life?

How would you feel about the changes?

What jobs today require people to say goodbye to their families

and friends for a long time?

Does anyone in your family have a job like this?

In the 1940s many Americans worked for the war.

Sometimes they had to be away from their families for

many months at a time. Saying goodbye was a

hard thing to do, and the work was sometimes dangerous. Many families did

not know if they would see each other again.

During World War II the government rationed, or limited, the amount

of food and other materials a person could purchase.

The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) sometimes had

trouble finding shoes, which wore out during marching.

Only one pair of shoes was rationed per person per year. Rationing allowed all people

to have their fair share.

Do you ever have to share things?

Whom do you share with?

What sorts of things have you shared?

Why is it important to do this?

you would grow in it?”

During World War II, many people began growing

“Victory Gardens,” fruits and vegetable were hard to come by because of rationing. With a “Victory Garden” you could grow your own fruits and

vegetables and not have to buy them at the grocery store.

Page 28: Pre visit card pp - vmh

During World War II, the United States government created

thousands of colorful posters to encourage people to do things for the war. The government asked women to work in factories and

grow “Victory Gardens.”. They even asked children to join the American

Junior Red Cross.

Does the government ask you to do anything today?

What are some issues that the government might make a poster

about today?

Why would they ask you to do these things?
