WeeklyNews Events and announcements for the week beginning Sunday, Oct. 18 Celebration Weekend: For Such A Time as This by Amy Kline for Kingdom Builders Christ the King Lutheran Church of Cary www.ctkcary.com 919-467-8989 As followers of Christ, we’ve been called to sit and com- mune at various tables. We’ve considered these over the past few weeks through the sermon series, For Such a Time as This. Setting a table which reach- es beyond our home and church building and extends into our communities is part of the church’s mission. We are charged to look outside our intimate circles and see how we can participate in the healing of God’s creation, which is broken by injustice, inequity, violence, persistent poverty, and by sickness. Through the sermon series, we’ve asked ourselves the question Mordecai asked of Esther, “And who knows but that you have come to your royal posi- tion for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14) And who knows but that we are here, in 2020, to use our church community and resources for such a time as this? A time when we are scared and feeling physically separated from our communities; a time of racial injustice; a time when the stakes are high. Just as Christ gathered his disciples before sending them out (Luke 9:1), we’ve gathered together at our intergenerational, congregational “table” to consider, what can we do? How can we raise noise like the widow in Luke 18 who pleaded with the judge, over and over again, “‘Grant me justice against my adversary” until he granted it to her? Looking forward towards the end of the year, there are a couple of unique opportunities to make our voices heard and make a commitment to take part in our mission as a church. First of all, vote in the upcoming election. (See page 3 for voting options and dates.) Secondly, give financially to the work of the church as you are able. As part of our Celebration Sunday, we ask members to complete an estimate of giving card for 2021. Estimates can be recorded securely online or cards may be returned by mail or in person to the church office. We move forward, trusting that God’s work is already underway, in such a time as this.

Election Dates to Note:Register to Vote at early voting loca-tions by 10/31Request a Vote by Mail/Absentee Ballot no later than Oct. 27 Return Absentee Ballot to Board of Elections office no later than Oct. 27, 5 pm (earlier return recommended)Return Absentee Ballot by Mail no later than Nov. 3 (must be post-marked this day; earlier return recom-mended)Early Voting: Oct. 15-31Election Day: Tuesday, Nov. 3

CTK Votes Update: Volunteers for the Advocacy Team made phone calls to church members encour-aging participation in the upcoming election. The nonpartisan calls reached out to 545 households over several days ending Octo-ber 10. The majority of calls, 348, resulted in messages being left on voicemail; another 92 went unan-swered. Among the 105 house-holds where contact was made, voters’ enthusiasm was clear - 81 had requested absentee ballots either to use or have as a backup plan if they decided not to vote in person. Another 51 had already cast their absentee ballots, and 56 anticipated voting in person either during the Oct. 15-31 early-voting or on Election Day, Nov. 3.It’s not too late to request an ab-sentee ballot if you wish to do so. See the State Board of Elections website, www.ncsbe.gov, to make an online request. After receiving your ballot, submit it as soon as possible to be sure it is counted. People who request absentee ballots can forego using it and

alternately vote in person. Those options are using any early-voting site in your county of residence – look for days and times with less crowding – or go to your assigned precinct on Election Day.Voting is both a privilege for citi-zens and a sacred responsibility for church-goers striving for peace and justice. We thank our members who are rising to meet that responsibility despite this year’s challenges. To follow up with the A-Team, go to CTKCary.com/vote or email [email protected].

Report from ONE Wake Founding AssemblyThank you to those who participated in this event last week on Zoom. There were 3,168 persons logged in on more than 1,900 devices, including 107 persons representing our church. Attorney General Josh Stein, Wake County Commissioners James West, Sig Hutchinson and Matt Calabria, Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin, and developer John Kane, plus other officials and candidates, participated. ONE Wake secured com-mitments to help with affordable housing, to work to hold landlords ac-countable for predatory practices, and to work with ONE Wake to en-sure that Downtown South benefits the community. The organization also kicked off a listening campaign seeking to talk to at least 1,000 residents on the topic of public education. Overall, the event provided an example of how joining forces through ONE Wake has great poten-tial to benefit our community. Participants are encouraged to send any comments and feedback to [email protected].
